President’s message
Moving forward in difficult times
As the current price of aluminum hovers just above
the lowest point reached during the last financial crisis,
we have had to temper some of our ambitious targets
to reflect the economic reality.
Forced to decrease its aluminum production
worldwide, Alcoa resigned itself last May
to shut down the Baie-Comeau Smelter’s
Söderberg plant sooner than planned. It
also delayed, by three years, the start-up of
the new pot lines that are to be part of the
plant’s modernization. While they will now
be fulfilled at a different pace, our investment
commitments to the region stand firm.
Today, like tomorrow, the smelter remains
an important economic and social driver
for Québec’s North Shore.
From an environmental perspective, this
announcement is a positive one since,
shutting down the Söderberg plant will mean
an earlier than anticipated 40% reduction
in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for
the Baie-Comeau Smelter.
This announcement took place after the end
of 2012, the reporting year for the results
presented in this document. Nonetheless,
I chose to speak about it because of its
importance, and because it demonstrates

our commitment to move forward even
in difficult times. In fact, our team scored
numerous achievements in 2012 in every
facet of sustainability.
The economy
With more than 3,000 employees and annual
spin-offs of approximately $1.5 billion, Alcoa
Canada Global Primary Products plays an
essential role in Québec’s provincial and
regional economies. We continuously strive
to improve our performance by focusing
on innovation, knowledge, R&D and
partnerships.
Along with several partners, we created the
Québec Aluminium Industrial Cluster, which
aims to double the amount of aluminum
transformed locally within the next ten years.
Alcoa Innovation, an R&D partnership that we
founded in 2008, is contributing its technical
expertise to reaching the same goal.
Sustainability and operational optimization
go hand and hand at Alcoa, and we are
hoping to instill this same attitude in our
suppliers and partners through joint initiatives
like those we carried out last year based on
the BNQ 21000 method.
The environment
A respect for the environment is embedded
in our processes and procedures. That is
why we were the first company to sign a
voluntary GHG reduction agreement with
the Government of Québec back in 2001.
Our 2012 emissions were 32% lower
than those recorded in that baseline year,
although various factors led to a slight
increase compared to 2011.
Electricity is essential to our operations, so
efficiency is an ongoing priority. Last year,
the Baie-Comeau Smelter joined its two
sister plants in becoming Elite members
of Hydro-Québec’s Écolectrique network,
which is made up of the province’s industrial
energy efficiency leaders.
Eliminating landfilling remains one of our
objectives, and we achieved an additional
7% decrease in 2012. This means that we
have reduced the amount of waste going
to landfill by 65% since 2005, excluding
spent pot lining and casthouse dross, which
we treat separately. Last year, we recycled
100% of the spent pot lining produced at created three Funds, one for each

core priority. Last year, we implemented
a number of wellness initiatives. Despite
a decrease in our recordable incident rate
to only 0.26, the severity of one of those
incidents, in which one of our colleagues
lost his life, underscored the fact that
zero is the only acceptable number.
Consequently, we have doubled our
efforts to identify and prevent serious risks
so that such an incident will never reoccur.

Community engagement is one of our

fundamental values. In 2012, participation
in our volunteer support programs was
high, and we successfully launched Martin Brière

 Products and transformation
Alcoa’s success is founded on the environmental,
social and economic value of its products. This value
is both intrinsic to our aluminum – a solid, lightweight,
durable and recyclable metal – and enhanced by its
transformation in a variety of industrial sectors.
In addition to aluminum smelters, Alcoa
operates transformation facilities in Canada
that serve the aerospace, automobile and
construction industries.
In Québec, Alcoa Canada Global Primary
Products operates the Baie-Comeau,
Bécancour* and Deschambault smelters,
as well as the Bécancour Rod Plant. They
have a combined production capacity of
more than 1 million metric tons of primary
products (rolling ingots, T-ingots and billets)
and aluminum rod, a primary transformation
product. The company has over 3,100
employees and its operations generate

economic spin-offs of more than $1.5 billion
every year.
Product design and life cycle
We are convinced that global market
demand will continue to rise for
environmentally responsible products,
based on their full life cycle. Alcoa’s
primary aluminum already holds Cradle
to Cradle Silver level certification from
McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry
(MBDC), and the company
created its own Life Cycle
Assessment Center of
Excellence in 2012.
Alcoa Foundation also awarded a $350,000
grant, to be disbursed between 2011
and 2013, to École Polytechnique de
Montréal to support the development of
ImpactWorld+, a new global model for life
cycle impact assessment. A beta version of
the method was launched in May 2012.
Innovation, expertise and R&D
We are proud that our Deschambault
Smelter was chosen to be home to
the Global Primary Products Center of
Excellence, Alcoa’s benchmark in this
area, especially since more than half of its
highly specialized personnel hails from the
province of Québec. Their expertise reaches
beyond our own borders since several of
our specialists are on assignment at large
Alcoa projects around the world, including
the $10-billion Raz Az Zawr industrial
megacomplex in Saudi Arabia, which will
include a bauxite mine, an alumina refinery,
a smelter and a rolling mill.

In 2010, to extend the reach of Québec’s
expertise even further, we created, in
partnership with the Natural Sciences and
Engineering Research Council of Canada,
the Laval University NSERC/Alcoa Industrial
Research Chair on advanced modeling
of electrolytic cells and energy efficiency
(MACE3). In 2012, participating students
and academics published six articles in
scientific journals and delivered three
presentations at the TMS 2012 conference.
Alcoa Innovation
Created by Alcoa Canada Global Primary
Products, in partnership with Centre de
recherche industrielle du Québec (CRIQ)
and the Aluminium Research and
Development Centre of Quebec (CQRDA),
Alcoa Innovation pursued its mission to
support the development of innovative
products featuring transformed aluminum,
mainly in the transportation sector. The
organization launched a newsletter in
2012, INNOVER, to strengthen its ties to
public-sector and industrial decision-makers.

A new aluminium industrial cluster
The members of the Aluminium Association
of Canada, including Alcoa Canada Global
Primary Products, established the Québec
Aluminium Industrial Cluster (QAIC) in
2012. Its mission is to bring together
Québec-based organizations involved in
the production, transformation and use of
aluminum, and in R&D, to create synergies
within the province that will promote training
and technology development. Its objective:
to double the volume and value of the
aluminum transformed in Québec within
the next ten years.

Last year, Alcoa Canada held its second
industrial design contest, in partnership
with the Québec association of industrial
designers (ADIQ) and the ministère du
Développement économique, de l’Innovation

to draw inspiration from aluminum’s many
properties to create objects to dress a table,
if not build the table itself. The winning
concept, the Balcony eating area for

Laberge and Mario Primeau from Primeau
Designers, was a gleaming example of
aluminum’s boundless potential.
Responsible procurement
Following a recommendation from our
Sustainability Advisory Committee,
we developed an approach to help
improve sustainability performance, based
on the BNQ 21000 approach of the Bureau
de normalisation du Québec (Québec
standards board). However, we were unable
to launch the initiative in 2012, and we are
currently aligning the approach with our
existing procurement practices. In addition,
a dozen of our suppliers participated in a
BNQ 21000 pilot project in 2011. The new
BNQ 21000 Méthode allégée (simplified
method) was launched in 2013, with five
of our suppliers taking part.
Environment
Protecting the environment in the areas where
we live and work is a fundamental Alcoa value.
Our environment managers and specialists make
it their daily priority, but every one of us does
our part.
Climate change
We are in a strong position to meet
the requirements of the new Québec
GHG cap and trade system thanks to
the work we have put into meeting the
targets of our voluntary GHG emissions
reduction agreement with the ministère du
Développement durable, de l’Environnement,
de la Faune et des Parcs (MDDEFP), and
the third party audits conducted on our
performance since 2002.
At the end of 2012, we
had reduced our direct GHG
emissions by 32% compared
to 2001.

In 2012, our total emissions increased
slightly. This was mainly due to an increase
in perfluorocarbon (PFC) emissions at the
Bécancour Smelter related to operating
issues, and at the Baie-Comeau Smelter
following a lightning strike at one of its
transformers. Conversely, the Deschambault
Smelter recorded its best year to date in
terms of PFC emissions.
Other air emissions
We met all air emissions targets established
in the environmental agreement signed
with the MDDEFP, except for total fluorides
at the Baie-Comeau Söderberg plant
because of a shortage of quality raw
materials and the instability of the process.
A targeted action plan has been developed
to deal with this exceedence. The Bécancour
Smelter also implemented a strict action
plan following an increase in total fluoride
emissions in July 2012, which saw it exceed
both annual and monthly limits.
Performance at the Baie-Comeau Söderberg
plant in regards to polycyclic aromatic
hydrocarbons (PAH) improved considerably,
decreasing from 0.24 kg/t Al in 2011 to
0.20 kg/t Al in 2012, thanks to operational
and raw material supply changes.
Energy
Electricity is an invaluable resource for us
and we continuously strive to optimise our
consumption. Since 2012, all of Alcoa’s
Québec smelters have been Elite members
of Hydro-Québec’s Écolectrique network,
which includes all of the province’s energy
efficiency leaders.
Material use and recycling
We reduced landfilled waste by 7%
(excluding spent pot lining and casthouse
dross) compared to 2011, for a total
reduction of 65% since 2005, the baseline
year for Alcoa’s 2020-2030 objectives.

Spent pot lining is the most significant waste
product generated by aluminum smelters.
Last year, we succeeded in recycling all of
the used pot lining produced by our plants.
We also marked progress when it came
to casthouse dross, recycling some of it
in-house. Trials conducted in 2011 had
allowed us to recycle close to 8% at our
facilities; this increased to 23% in 2012.
Water
Water is a vital resource. This is why we
aim to optimize both consumption as well
as discharges into the environment, which
we treat to minimize their environmental
impact and to meet regulatory requirements.
Equipped with a system that recycles
process water and rainwater recovered
on site, the Deschambault Smelter only
requires a minimal water supply. Overall,

in 2012.

Employee engagement
ACTION
For an ACTION project, a group of Alcoa
employees decide to donate their time
to a not-for-profit organization. Alcoa
Foundation supports them by giving the
organization the equivalent of US$1,500
or US$3,000, depending on the number
of participating employees. In 2012, more
than 500 of our people took part in a
record 44 ACTION projects, for a total
of 2,168 hours volunteered and a
contribution of over $129,000.

Alcoans in Motion
2012 marked the launch of a new
support program for employees who run,
walk, wheel or otherwise participate in a
physical activity to benefit a not-for-profit
organization. In addition to the energy
output of our people, Alcoa donates
US$2,500 to the organization. In its first year,
the program supported four activities: three
bike rides in Québec to benefit Centraide/
United Way, Opération Enfant Soleil and
the Fondation du Centre de santé et des
services sociaux de Manicouagan; and the
Pentathlon des neiges, which benefitted

program.

five of which took place during the same
weekend and mobilized 125 volunteers. That
same weekend, Alcoa took the opportunity
to announce two surprise donations of
US$5,000 to local organizations.
Alcoa Green Works
This activity, which is held between April
21 and June 21, invites employees and
the communities where Alcoa operates to
take action for a greener planet. In addition
to the tree plantings mentioned above, we
completed five “green volunteering” projects.
We also served some 1,000 vegetarian
meals at our plant cafeterias during the
5th edition of Défi Climat, in an effort to
reduce the GHG emissions associated
with raising livestock.

Bravo! 7th Worldwide Month of Service (WMS)

The Bravo! program recognizes the efforts
of individual employees who volunteer at
least 50 hours of their time to a not-for-profit
organization by giving the latter a donation
equivalent to US$250 per participating

is the linchpin of Alcoa Foundation’s
volunteering program. In Canada, 2,035
employees took part in 40 activities for a

In Bécancour and in the municipalities
of Deschambault-Grondines and
Portneuf, the two local funds supported
the development of sustainability plans
in these communities. In Baie-Comeau,
where the Ma ville, ma voix (My city, my
voice) initiative served as the inspiration
for creating the Alcoa Sustainable
Communities Fund, things developed
quickly. The first investments by the
Baie-Comeau Smelter Sustainable
Communities Fund were announced
in January 2013.
Reflecting the kind of synergy we
nurture among our plants, the three
local Funds have established a
communications network that
promotes information sharing,
technical assistance and the
emergence of shared ideas among
the three communities.
An economic driver in our communities
With revenues of $2.3 billion and economic
benefits of nearly $1.5 billion in Québec,
some $600 million of which directly profit
the communities where we live and work,
Alcoa Canada Global Primary Products is
an essential feature on Québec’s economic
and social landscapes. To these figures
must be added our $2-billion investment
program over less than 10 years, and the
foundational impact of our activities on
hundreds of Québec suppliers of goods
and services.
In addition to our own activities, we
are striving to increase aluminum
manufacturing and transformation across
Québec. An example of our involvement
is the creation of the Québec Aluminium
Industrial Cluster, in which members of our
industry have joined forces to generate
maximum economic benefits and wealth
creation in the province.
