A GROUP OF BLACK PEOPLE VOTED AGAINST THE SPRINGBOKS. LISTEN AND COMPLETE THE
SPEECH.
And now, for the next item in our_______________. The NSC proposes a vote on the following
motion. That as a __________________symbol of the apartheid era, the colors, anthem and
the _________________of the Springboks be eliminated immediately and that all the sports
team ___________________South Africa shall be known forthwith as “The Proteas”. Now
comrades, we will submit this motion to a head vote and in the event of a _____________,
we`ll go to a written ballot. All of those ______________of eliminating the Springboks, raise
your_______________________.
_____-No.
_____- No.
_____- Madiba, people want this. They hate the Springboks. They don`t want to be
represented by a team they cheered against all their lives.
_____-The day I`m afraid to do that, is the day I`m no longer fit to be a leader.
_____- I strongly advice against this, especially on your own. It gives the impression of
autocratic leadership. You are risking alienating your cabinet and your country.
_____- Yes, I know but in this sense, these people are wrong and I, as an elected leader, it is
my job to show them that.
_____- You are risking your political capital. You are risking your future as a leader.
Brothers, sisters, comrades. I´m here today because I believe you have made a decision with
little information and forth sight. I´m aware of your earlier vote. I know that it was unanimous.
Nonetheless, I think that we should restore the Springboks, restore their symbols, their
anthem and their colors immediately. Let me tell you why. On Robben Island, in Pollsmoor jail,
all of my jailers were Afrikaners. For 27 years, I learned about them. I learned their language,
read their books, their poetry. I had to know my friends before I would prevail against them,
and we did prevail, did we not?
All of us here, we prevailed. Our enemies are not the Afrikaners any more. They are our fellow
South Africans, our partners in this nation and they treasure the Springboks rugby. If we take
that from them, we`ll lose them. We`ll prove that we are what they fear we would be. We
have to prove them wrong. We have to give them a surprise with our compassion, with
restrain and generosity. I know all of the things they didn´t give us but this is not time to
celebrate petty revenge. This is the time to build our country using every single brick available
to use even if this bricks come wrapped in blue. You elected me your leader, let me help you
now. Who is with me on this? Who?
