The objective of this document is to provide an overview of Microsoft Lifecycle policies, recent announcements
and changes, as well as highlight the upcoming support deadlines (products and services retiring, reaching end of
support or transitioning to the Extended Support phase) for enterprise products and services available through
retail purchase and/or volume licensing.
For a comprehensive list of products, please go to the public-facing Lifecycle web site:
https://docs.microsoft.com/lifecycle.
For more information regarding Microsoft Support Policies or for specific questions related to your production
environment, please contact your Account Manager.
Customers are strongly encouraged to engage or complete their migration projects before those deadlines.
Microsoft provides industry-leading lifecycle policies – in length and provision – giving customers
consistent and predictable guidelines for the availability of support throughout the life of a product.
The Fixed Lifecycle Policy applies to many commercial and some consumer products currently available through
retail purchase and/or volume licensing. It provides:
• A defined support and servicing Lifecycle timeline at the time of product launch,
• A minimum of five years Mainstream Support,
• An additional period of Extended Support for some products.
The Modern Lifecycle Policy covers products and services that are serviced and supported continuously. Under this
policy, the product or service remains in support if the following criteria are met:
• Customers must stay current as per servicing and system requirements published for the product or service,
• Customers must be licensed to use the product or service,
• Microsoft must currently offer support for the product or service.
Change Notification
Changes for these products and services may be more frequent and require customers to be alerted for forthcoming
modifications to their product or service. For products and services governed by the Modern Lifecycle policy, unless
otherwise noted, Microsoft’s policy is to provide a minimum 30 days’ notification when customers are required to
take action in order to avoid significant degradation to the normal use of the product or service.
For products governed by the Modern Lifecycle Policy, Microsoft will provide a minimum of 12 months’ notification
prior to ending support if no successor product or service is offered – excluding free services or preview releases.
For detailed information regarding Microsoft Lifecycle policies or the support lifecycle of a specific
product, please go to the public-facing Lifecycle web site: https://docs.microsoft.com/lifecycle.
Exchange Server 2013 will reach end of support on April 11, 2023.
Customers are encouraged to complete their migration to a newer version of Exchange before this date.
Migration options include:
Beginning October 1, 2022: Exchange Online Basic Auth will begin to be permanently disabled in all
tenants.
Basic Authentication is being disabled for Outlook, Exchange Web Services (EWS), Remote PowerShell
(RPS), POP, IMAP, and Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) protocols in Exchange Online to improve customer
security. Customers must update end user client applications or line of business apps to Modern Auth
before October 2022, to allow them to continue to function properly.
We will post a message to the Microsoft 365 Message Center 7 days prior, and we will post Service Health
Dashboard notifications to each tenant on the day of the change.
If you have removed your dependency on basic auth, this will not affect your tenant or users. If you have
not (or are not sure), check the Message Center for the latest data contained in the monthly usage reports
we have been sending monthly since October 2021. The data for August 2022 will be sent within the first
few days of September.
After January 10, 2023: Microsoft 365 Apps running on Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows Server
2008 R2 will stop receiving security updates.
Microsoft 365 Apps is supported under the Modern Lifecycle Policy. Therefore, the apps are supported
continuously given that customers stay current per the servicing and system requirements. These
requirements include using Microsoft 365 Apps on an operating system currently in support.
On January 10, 2023, Windows 8.1 will reach the end of support. Also, on the same day, the three-year
Extended Security Updates (ESU) paid program for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 ends. While
Microsoft 365 Apps is not currently supported on Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, we committed
to provide security updates for the length of these ESU programs. Additionally, new installations of
Microsoft 365 Apps will be blocked on Windows 8.1 devices. We recommend that customers running these
operating systems migrate before January 2023.
Please remember that using unsupported software may increase an organization’s exposure to security
risks or impact its ability to meet compliance obligations.

The Office 2013 suite of products will reach end of support on April 11, 2023.
After this date, support for Office 2013 will end and security updates will no longer be available, per the
Fixed Lifecycle Policy. This may increase your organization's exposure to security risks or impact
compliance obligations.
Additionally, customers connecting to Microsoft 365 via an Office 2013 client may experience performance
or reliability issues. Below is a list of Office products that currently support connection to Microsoft 365:
Customers are encouraged to complete their migration to a newer version of Office before this date.
Migration options include:
End of support means customers will no longer received regular security updates and could face
compatibility issues with newer Office features and technologies.
Support for SQL Server 2012 has already ended on July 12, 2022.
Support for Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 will end on October 10, 2023.
End of support means regular security updates will no longer be provided. With cyberattacks becoming
more sophisticated and frequent, running apps and data on unsupported versions can create significant
security and compliance risks. It is highly recommended that customers upgrade to the most current
versions for better performance, efficiency, and regular security updates.
For customers who need more time, Microsoft is announcing Extended Security Updates (ESU) for SQL
Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2.
This additional extended servicing option will help secure workloads for three more years after the end of
support deadline. Also, one additional year of ESU is available for Windows Server and SQL Server 2008
and 2008 R2 only on Azure. Customers can migrate applications and SQL Server databases to Azure Virtual
Machines and get free Extended Security Updates for three years after end of support, only in Azure.
