1. GENERAL
1.1. Scope
This specification together with the data sheet defines the minimum requirements for
design, manufacture, manufacturer acceptance testing, Inspection, painting,
documentation, guarantee and preparation for shipment of low voltage induction
motors for the 300,000 MTA EB/SM Production Facilities. Motors covered by this
specification shall be suitable for indoor and outdoor installation
2.1. General
The low voltage motors shall be designed, manufactured and tested according to the
requirements of the latest edition of the following codes and standards in order of
precedence:
- International Electro-technical Commission (IEC) publications,
- CENELEC standards,
- Applicable recognized standards and codes (API, NEC, BS, VDE, etc...) where IEC
standards have not yet been issued.
In any case, local regulations shall be observed.
The motors will comply with the requirements of applicable IEC, European Directive:
“ATEX 94/9/EC Explosive Atmosphere” standard.
The listed Standards and Codes, together with their all parts and subparts, shall be
applied considering their latest applicable issue available.
IEC 60072 Dimensions and output series for rotating electrical machines,
IEC 60085 Thermal evaluation and classification of electrical insulation,
IEC 60182 Basic dimensions of winding wire,
IEC 60279 Measurement of the winding resistance of an a.c machine
during operation at alternative voltage
IEC 60751 Industrial platinum resistance thermometer sensors
IEC 60851 Winding wires test methods
IEC 61000 Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).
3. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
3.1. Application
Induction motors will generally be used to drive pumps, blowers, agitators, compressors
and other constant-speed operated equipment.
Motor shall satisfy the speed-torque requirements of the driven equipment over its entire
starting and operating range.
3.2. Proposal
- List of all deviations and exceptions to this specification. The lack of any declaration
and/or deviation will be considered as full compliance with the specifications.
4. AMBIENT CONDITIONS
The design of the equipment and of its components shall comply with the following
environmental conditions:
The LV induction motors shall be suitable for outdoor installation with typical atmosphere
of chemical plant or refinery (dusty, marine and corrosive).
5. DESIGN
Motors will be capable of providing their rated output at the above ambient conditions
with the following combined conditions of voltage and frequency without exceeding the
over temperature limits.
Voltage Frequency
400V +/- 10% 50 Hz +/- 5%
Motors shall be of the squirrel cage induction type unless otherwise specified. As a
general rule, motors up to 160 kW should be Low Voltage, and medium Voltage above
160 kW.
Motors’ ratings smaller than 0.37 kW can be selected to operate single (230 Vac) or
three phase (400 Vac) based on the driven equipment specification and/ or project
requirements (except process motors shall be 400V, three phase, 50 Hz).
For reason of economy, or special equipment considerations, kW break point may vary
(with the purchaser’s approval)
Total harmonic distortion (THD) of the supply network voltage will not exceed 5%.
Unless specified otherwise, motors shall be suitable for Direct On-Line starting
Duty type service: Motor shall be designed for continuous running operation at rated
power, duty service type S1 according to IEC 60034.1.
When required by process, the motors will be variable speed fed through a frequency
converter (VSD). Generally the motor and adjustable frequency drive shall be specified
as a package, if this is not possible, there shall be documented liaison between the
motor and adjustable frequency drive suppliers about the application of the equipment,
in particular regarding the ATEX compliance (whenever necessary).
The requirements related to the motor torque capabilities, as described in this section,
are all based on a situation where the motor is at full load operating temperature and with
rated voltage and frequency applied, unless otherwise stated.
Motor power factor shall not be less than 0.85; Any exception to this value (For small size
motors less than 1.5 kW) is subject to the owner approval.
Low voltage motor efficiency shall not be less than 0.85 at full load. Any exception to this
value (For small size motors less than 1.5 kW) is subjected to the owner approval.
All electrical equipment installed within an hazardous area shall comply with the
classification of the area in accordance with the IEC 60079, ATEX 94/9/EC .
Electric motors installed in UNCLASSIFIED AREAS but within the boundaries of the
process area, shall be certified Ex- n and IP55
Electrical Motors installed Indoor and in a safe area shall be industrial type, weather
proof, TEFC, IP 55.
For motors used in hazardous & semi-hazardous locations enclosures shall be certified
for use in such hazardous locations (as defined in IEC ) and manufacturer shall supply
certificate from recognized authority (IEC, CENEIEC). Motors shall follow ATEX
directives.
Motors enclosures selection shall be defined in relevant motor data sheets. Motors gas
group and ignition temperature class shall also be defined in relevant motor data sheets.
Vertical motors with downward shaft shall be provided with a rain canopy to cover the air
inlet of the fan cool.
For LV motor the locked rotor apparent power shall comply with IEC 60034-12. However,
for motors with rated output in excess of 55 kW, the starting current will be lower the 7.0
time the rated current of the motor.
Motors shall be designed for full voltage direct-on-line starting (unless otherwise specified
in data sheet) , and suitable for accelerating to rated speed, and continuous operating of
the driven equipment for all conditions of service
Unless otherwise specified in the data sheet the starting current after consideration of
IEC tolerance of 20 % must not exceed 6 times the full load current for the low voltage
motors, while the starting torque must not be less than the value required by the driven
equipment.
The torque-speed characteristic of the motor with 80% rated voltage and rated frequency
applied at the motor terminals shall be adequate for starting the driven load under the
most severe conditions. e.g. pump with open discharge.
In general the motors shall be capable of withstanding, without damage, the effect of
automatic re-acceleration following voltage dip or momentary interruption. Where this is
not possible, the supplier shall state the requirements for re-starting motor safely.
Motors shall be capable of withstanding without any damage the re-energization at rated
voltage with a residual voltage at motor terminals not less than 40%
Motor design at any voltage between 80% and 100% of rated voltage shall allow three
successive starts against full load torque (at cold) with the motor initially at maximum
ambient temperature (total time for the 3 starts not exceeding 4 minutes) or two
successive starts (from hot) with the motors initially at full load operating temperatures
without injurious heating of the windings. This should be followed by a cooling period of
30 minutes with the ability to withstand indefinite repetition of the procedure and two (2)
consecutive starts from hot with the actual external inertia connected.
The insulation materials of stator windings shall be at least class F (consideration shall be
given to other classes of sound insulation if required). The motor shall be designed for a
maximum permissible temperature rise limited to the one corresponding to a class B.
All insulating materials shall be highly resistant to oil, moisture and flame propagation.
5.2.5. Vibration
The maximum vibration levels shall be as given in the IEC standard 60034-14.
All motors shall be statically and dynamically balanced and the maximum amplitude of
vibration (peak to peak) shall not exceed the permissible values stated in IEC 60034 as
applicable for motor rated horsepower.
The use of solder or similar deposits for balancing is not acceptable
Motor noise levels shall not exceed the values stated in IEC 60034 part 9 as applicable
for motor rated horsepower. However, Motor noise levels shall not exceed the 85 dB
(A) of 1 meter from equipment
6. FABRICATION
The degree of protection for motor enclosures and terminal boxes shall be IP 55 for
outdoor installation.
Products that are toxic to the environment or that are considered potential carcinogens
shall not be used.
The use of hygroscopic materials should be avoided. The materials used shall be
selected to prevent contact corrosion.
Transport units heavier than 25 kg shall have eyebolts, lugs or extension pieces clearly
identifiable to be used for hoisting. Eyebolts shall not be part of the equipment type of
protection.
Motors weighing over 600 kg shall have jacking bolts or facilities to lift the motor with
the aid of a mechanical jacking device to facilitate the alignment of the motor with the
driven equipment.
Motors shall be provided with external earthing facilities. The earthing facility shall be
clearly marked with the appropriate symbol.
Component parts of the frame shall be adequately bonded together and to the external
frame earth terminal
All motor frames and bearing end-shields shall be constructed of ferrous metals.
Motor frame including bearing supports shall have sufficient strength and rigidity to
avoid distortion or increased vibration as a result of external mechanical forces, e.g.,
tightening of fixing bolts.
Castings shall be sound and free of shrink holes, cracks, scale or other similar injurious
defects. Surface of castings shall be cleaned by shot blast, pickling or other standard
methods.
The surface temperature of the heater element and relevant box or of the motor
enclosure shall not exceed the specified limited temperature suitable for the area
classification. The heater shall be of the self-regulating type and certified for use in
locations suitable for the area classification
The connecting leads of the heater elements shall be brought out to terminals in a
separate heater terminal box mounted on the motor frame. A prominent warning label
"Warning - Circuit May Be Live" shall be provided.
Power junction box can be used, and in this case the junction box must be provided
with two entries (one for the power cable and the second for space heater cable).
6.5. Windings
Stator windings of LV motors shall be made of high quality enamelled wire with suitable
ground and phase insulation.
The windings shall have their 6 leads accessible in the terminal box to allow star or
delta coupling.
Two speed motors shall have separate windings. Dhalander motor type is not
authorized.
A terminal box of sturdy construction shall be provided with suitable space for
connecting the cable(s) as indicated on the requisition/data sheet.
In view of cables long distances, voltage drop, de-rating factors and the short-circuit
rating of the system, the cable size or the number of cables can be twice that
considered normal by seller. Consequently a larger terminal box than standard may be
required (Manufacturer to define the maximum cable size and number of conductor
suitable for motor Junction box).
Unless otherwise stated in the requisition, the terminal boxes shall be located at the top
in a way that the cable connection can be made from four sides at 90°.
Inside the terminal box, an earthing clamp or bolt of adequate dimensions shall be
provided for connection of the cable earthing (if-any). The earthing facility shall be
clearly marked with the appropriate symbol.
The design of the terminal box shall be such as to prevent small parts from dropping
into the motor housing.
All terminal boxes shall have ISO metric threaded entries provided with adequate
threaded plug as per area classification.
Gland plates to be used for single core cables shall be made of non-magnetic material.
All the motors shall be equipped with terminal boxes of cast iron or steel.
6.7. Terminals
Terminal marking of the main cable connections and the direction of the rotation shall
be in accordance of IEC 60034-8.
Bushing for motors up to 30 kW shall be synthetic resin type while motors 30 kW and
greater shall be provided with stud type bushing unless otherwise specified on data
sheet. The use of porcelain is not allowed.
Terminal connections shall be constructed in such ways that direct contact between
screws, bolts or nuts and the conductor is avoided. Connections shall be secured
against loosening.
Cable passage through frame of motor to terminal box shall be sealed by a suitable
bushing to prevent the entrance of moisture or foreign matter.
The mating joint between terminal box and motor shall be provided with a gasket for
non-explosion proof motors. Gasket for box-cover shall also be provided.
On motors certified for use in hazardous locations, all joints and bushings between
motor and terminal box shall also be certified explosion-proof.
The bushings and insulators shall be fully rated for the rated motor voltage and shall be
capable of withstanding both the dynamic and thermal effects of a thoroughgoing short
circuit current for at least 0.2 seconds. The expected short circuit current shall be
based on the maximum supply fault level specified on the data sheet.
Terminal boxes position shall be chosen such that to permit easy termination of cables
and easy maintenance without disconnecting of the cables.
The distance between bushings and between bushings and earthed parts of the
terminal box shall be based on the applicable distances for air insulated installation.
6.8.1. Rotor
The shaft shall be made of one-piece, heat-treated steel. All motors’ rotor shall be
precision balanced.
Welding on finished shafts is not allowed. Shafts and/or spiders subjected to welding
shall be post-weld stress relieved.
Shaft extensions including keys and keyway shall conform to manufacturer's standards.
Keys shall be supplied with motor by manufacturer.
The direction of the rotor shall be clearly and adequately indicated by mean of an arrow
at the non-driving end. For a motor suitable for rotating in either direction the arrow
shall be double ended.
6.8.2. Fans
Ventilation fans may form part of the rotor, fan material shall be as per manufacturer
standard, however aluminum and/or plastic fans are not acceptable.
The external fans shall be of non-corroding material or shall be treated with a corrosion
resistant coating.
The flow of cooling air shall be in the direction of the driven equipment.
Motors shall be preferable fitted with bi-directional fans. Motors fitted with unidirectional
fans shall be provided with an arrow permanently indicating the direction of rotation.
Indication by means of a painted or adhesive arrow is not acceptable.
On totally enclosed and explosion-proof motors fans shall be non-sparking type and shall
be sufficiently conductive to prevent the accumulation of static charges.
They shall force the cooling air from non-driving end toward the driving end, and shall
preferably be suitable for either direction of rotation.
6.8.3. Coupling
The coupling design shall be based on the maximum transient torque that can be
expected at the coupling in case of a two or three-phase short-circuit at the motor
terminals.
6.8.4. Bearings
Within the application limits, ball and roller bearings are preferred, but it is the
responsibility of the motor manufacturer to provide the correct bearing for the
application.
Motors shall be equipped with life lubricated bearing. However, for special drives with
high radial forces the application of roller bearings or a combination of ball and roller
bearings at the drive-end side may be necessary. Re-greasing can be possible and
grease relieves valve proposed for large motors to be installed in a high temperature
environment.
As far as vertical motors are concerned, the bearing shall withstand the thrusts of both
driven machine and motor itself.
Bearings shall be in metric sizes and comply with ISO 15 and ISO 1132.
Vertical motors driving direct-coupled pumps shall have the thrust bearing at the non-
drive end (NDE).
The use of angular contact bearings shall be restricted to vertical motors where the
bearings have to withstand high axial forces. All rolling element bearings shall have a
metallic cage (steel cage is preferred).
Rotors of motors equipped with roller bearings shall be secured during transport to
avoid damage to the bearing(s).
Ball and roller bearings shall preferably be grease lubricated, and shall be provided
with suitable grease nipples and relief devices. A suitable seal system shall be
provided to keep foreign matter out of the bearing housing and to prevent loss of
grease.
The minimum re-lubrication interval shall be 4000 hours for horizontal motors and 2000
hours for vertical motors.
The bearing housing shall be equipped with a pressure relief device which ensures that
the new grease displaces the maximum amount of old grease and automatically ejects
any surplus to the outside of the motor casing. Spent grease retaining systems are not
favored. The lubrication nipple should be of the conical type. Re-lubrication shall be
possible with the motor in operation
6.9. Nameplates
The nameplates shall be made of stainless steel and be fixed to a non-removable part
of the frame.
Information provided on the rating plates shall be in accordance with IEC 60034-1,
ATEX 94/9/EC and shall include the following:
Reference code (IEC).
Manufacturer's name.
Motor type, frame designation, serial number.
Voltage, frequency, phases, wye or delta winding.
Mechanical output in hp, or kW.
Full load current, R.P.M., motor power factor.
Class of rating (continuous or intermittent).
Service factor.
Temperature rise and insulation class.
Starting current and torque in percent of full load value.
Hazardous area classification data (enclosure execution, gas group,
temperature class).
Certification Authority (where applicable).
Mechanical protection degree.
Bearing data.
Make and class of lubricant.
Motor weight.
Moment of inertia of rotor.
Purchase order number and year of manufacture
Motor with VSD shall be provided with additional nameplate information showing
related data
The values provided shall be actually measured and shall be based on the specified
operating conditions.
All motors shall be provided with a stainless steel item plate separated from rating plate
indicating the tag number of the motor.
The motors shall have a surface finish that complies with the Vendor’s standard for
increased protection against corrosion for the climatic conditions specified.
The paint system shall provide adequate protection against the adverse effects of
climate.
Parts of the motor normally shielded by the fan cover and the inside of the fan cover
shall, with respect to corrosion protection, be treated in a similar manner as normally
exposed parts.
All details including painting data sheets and procedures to be submitted to the purchaser
for approval prior to the award of any contract. Color shall be supplier's standard
The internal parts shall be painted or treated to make them corrosion resistant.
All bolts, studs and other fastening devices shall be made of corrosion resisting material
or plated or treated with corrosion resisting material.
Drain holes shall be provided in all motor base assemblies to allow drainage of moisture
or condensation from the motor. Drain holes in totally enclosed motors shall be provided
with explosion‐proof breather‐drain fittings
Motors shall be equipped with stainless steel screws, stainless steel nipple (if any),
corrosion resistant drains hole plug (if any).
During the guarantee period, the Manufacturer shall replace, at his own expense (parts
and labour), any component recognized as being defective or which not comply with
indicated Performance guarantees
In general, all of the requirements of the present Job specification and of the data sheet
for the motor shall be covered by the guarantees, taking into account written
dispensations granted by owner.
The tolerances accepted for some of the motor characteristics are derived from IEC
60034-1. These tolerances are only allowed to the extent that the motor is suited for the
specified operating conditions and life time.
The data sheet shall be completed by the supplier and submitted with his quotation within
the tolerances specified in the relevant codes. These values shall be the basis of a
performance guarantee.
The supplier is responsible for complying with all codes which apply to the equipment.
Any special certification requirements or inspection, by other authorities arising from the
above shall be arranged by the supplier and the costs for the same included in his
quotation.
The tests of equipment and materials are included in the Supplier’s scope
Inspection and testing activities shall be defined by the Manufacturer on the Fabrication
and quality control plan based on the minimum requirements established purchaser’s
Inspection and Test Plan (ITP).
The test shall be carried out in Manufacturer workshop at his care and expense.
(unless otherwise specified in the purchaser’s ITP).
Even in case Contractor waives to witness the tests the Manufacturer shall draw up the
certificate of the tests carried out in containing a full report and all the results and the
measures of the tests.
The Manufacturer shall allow the free access of inspectors to the workshop, shall give
all information required and shall make available, if required, un-priced copies of
internal orders to other sub-suppliers.
The Supplier shall cooperate with inspection representative to carry out the complete
range of functional and routine tests as specified by IEC and Purchaser's ITP.
The supplier shall provide copies of certificates to demonstrate that the equipment and
components have been successfully type tested by a recognized international testing
authority at the required operating and short circuit duty. Certificates shall be provided
for each type and rating of equipment offered during quotation.
All test results shall be recorded, and attached to test certificates provided by the
supplier before release of the equipment can be authorized.
Each motor shall be given a routine factory test to assure that it is free from electrical or
mechanical defects, and that it meets design specifications. Routine test shall consist
of, but not limited to, the following:
- Bearing inspection
Motors for special duties or equipped with special protection equipment may require
additional tests. These tests if required will be indicated on the requisition.
- Type test for applicable type of protection, in accordance with IEC 60079
- Submerged stator test.
Tests shall be performed by the MANUFACTURER and shall be the source of a test
report which shall be provided to owner before the release for shipment.
Owner/contractor reserves the right to witness the performance tests at manufacturer
factory before the release for shipment.
The supplier quotation shall include the cost for carrying out all the tests required for
the motors.
9. DOCUMENTATION
Spare parts list shall describe part, function, manufacturer’s part number, vendor’s part
number, price, and delivery for each recommended spare part.
Commissioning spare parts shall be supplier responsibility but supplier shall submit a
detailed list with his quotation.
The supplier shall submit for each type and size of motor a detailed list of two years
spare parts with his quotation including at least the following spare parts:
- Bearings.
- Fans.
- Bushings.
- Accessories (if any).
Additional spare parts can be suggested by supplier.
11.1. Documentation
Supplier shall, on order award, advise and give to Purchaser all supporting
documentation relevant to any commodity contained in the supply subject to
governmental Export/Import Licence, so that all necessary actions can be promptly
taken in compliance with the related rules or regulations in force.
Supplier shall provide to Purchaser, the preliminary packing list 4 weeks after the
purchase order. All shipping documents (invoices, packing lists, FCR, B/L and others),
shall be in English language.
11.2. Delivery
At least 7 days prior to delivery, supplier shall give fax binding confirmation of the
actual Ex-works delivery date of the goods. Supplier shall be fully liable for any dead
freight and demurrage caused by his failure to deliver the goods within the confirmed
date.
Supplier shall deliver the goods only after receipt of purchaser/forwarder’s written
instructions. If requested, supplier shall provide free storage of the goods in a covered
area, for a period previously agreed upon with the purchaser.
The purchaser reserves the right to verify, by opening the packages at the erection site
or delivery point, that the quantities indicated in the packing list correspond with those
effectively contained in the packing. If, according to the sole judgment of purchaser, the
materials do not match with the quantity and/or types specified in the purchase order
and/or packing list, supplier shall, upon written notification of the irregular supply,
provide for prompt replacement at his own care and charge up to delivery at site.
The manufacturer shall take all measures to avoid any risk of damage or deterioration
during shipping When shipment is by sea, motors must be adequately protected
against knock and salt‐water spray, ...etc.
The Supplier should state the maximum storage time limits based on temperature.
Receiving location shall be notified two working days in advance so that handling
equipment will be available.
All motors shall be suitable for standing for at least one year prior to commissioning; all
cable entry holes shall be suitably sealed plugged so as to prevent the ingress of
water.
Motors shall be prepared for shipping by coating the exposed part of the shaft, and
other unpainted machined surfaces with water proof grease.
When required in material requisition, manufacturer shall provide a specialist for site
installation supervision, assistance start-up and commissioning supervision.
- Visual inspection.
- Check and supervision of mechanical installation.
During the start-up stage, manufacturer specialist shall carry-out, but not limited, the
following:
All Equipment shall be able to generally withstand the impact of the imposed electrical
tests as defined in referenced IEC.
The whole equipment shall be type tested in accordance with IEC 61000 part 4, level
3 - typical industrial environments, as detailed below:
IEC 61000-4-2- Electrostatic Discharge- level 3 - 8 kV air discharge
IEC 61000-4-3-Radiated Electromagnetic Field (RFI) -level3-10 V/m
IEC 61000-4-4-Electrical Fast Transient -level 3 - 4 kV common mode
IEC 61000-4-5-Surge- 2 kV line- earth and 1 kV line -line
The manufacturer shall provide type test certificates from a recognized testing
authority to verify that the whole equipment is effectively screened against EMC in
line with the applicable IEC standards.
The supplier shall consider the impact on environment because of his products during
different process (e.g. designs, manufacturing.... etc), and shall develop environment
friendly products and manufacturing processes such that the supplied equipment will
be safe, efficient and in a way that it conserve energy and other natural resources.
The electrical equipment and products shall cover (in design, engineering,
manufacturing and testing processes) any emergency, abnormal and upset conditions
which would be met during equipment operation to prevent the following:
- Environmental damages.
