Adolescence Management

for Teachers
Yousuf Hudawi , Valakkulam
• If you saw waterfall first, then it means that you are super social but
you also love your alone time
• If you saw the people in the white robes first. It means you feel lost
in your life right now. You don’t know where you’re headed but you’re
determined to make it in life. So, even if you don't know what exactly
is going on in your life right now, you're not losing hope and giving up
on your dreams and working hard to achieve what you desire.
What is Adolescence
• Adolescence is the phase of life between childhood and adulthood,
from ages 10 to 19.
The teenage years are also called adolescence.

Why Adolescence
• Adolescence is a critical link between childhood and adulthood,
characterized by significant physical, psychological, and social
transitions. These transitions carry new risks but also present
opportunities to positively influence the immediate and future health
of young people.

Stages of Adolescence
3 Stages
Early Adolescence (Ages 10 to 13)

• During this stage, children often start to grow more quickly.

• These body changes can inspire curiosity and anxiety in
some―especially if they do not know what to expect or what is
normal age, children often start to grow more quickly.
• Early adolescents have concrete, black-and-white thinking.
• Pre-teens feel an increased need for privacy.
Middle Adolescence (Ages 14 to 17)
• Physical changes from puberty continue during middle adolescence
• At this age, many teens become interested in romantic and sexual
relationships.
• Many middle adolescents have more arguments with their parents
as they struggle for more independence.
• The brain continues to change and mature in this stage, but there
are still many differences in how a normal middle adolescent thinks
compared to an adult.
Late Adolescents (18-21… and beyond!)

• Late adolescents generally have completed physical development and

grown to their full adult height. They usually have more impulse
control by now and may be better able to gauge risks and rewards
accurately.
Biological Development
Facial hair in males normally appears in a specific
order during puberty: The first facial hair to
appear tends to grow at the corners of the upper
lip, typically between 14 and 17 years of age
Pubescent boys often tend to have a good body
image, are more confident, secure, and more
independent
Late maturing boys can be less confident because
of poor body image when comparing themselves
to already developed friends and peers
Studies have shown that early maturing boys are
more likely to be sexually active and are more
likely to participate in risky behaviors
Early maturing girls are more exposed
to alcohol and drug abuse
Males experience their growth spurt about
two years later, on average, than females.
The weight gained during adolescence constitutes
nearly half of one's adult body weight.
The first places to grow are the extremities—the
head, hands and feet—followed by the arms and
legs, then the torso and shoulders
During puberty, bones become harder and
more brittle
Before puberty, there are nearly no sex differences
in fat and muscle distribution; during puberty,
boys grow muscle much faster than girls, although
both sexes experience rapid muscle development.
Sex differences are apparent as males tend to
develop "larger hearts and lungs
Boys are generally fertile before they have an
adult appearance
Females usually appear physically mature before
they are capable of becoming pregnant
The human brain is not fully developed by the
time a person reaches puberty.
The brain reaches 90% of its adult size by six
years of age.
The biggest changes in the folds during this time
occur in the parts of the cortex that process
cognitive and emotional information
Changes in the levels of the neurotransmitters
dopamine and serotonin in the limbic system
make adolescents more emotional and more
responsive to rewards and stress
Prefrontal cortex
Significant Changes in Adolescence period
Major tendencies
Willing loneliness and solitude
Decreasing focus in activities and creativities
Stress and boredom
Rejection and Stubbornness
Power resistance
Interest on sex talks.
