by questions), identify language used to persuade the reader and make inferences about the attitudes and feelings
of characters based on evidence in the text. They can distinguish supporting details from the main points in a text,
identify the main conclusions that present and contrast arguments in a clearly signalled way and recognise the use
of cohesive devices to link ideas within and between paragraphs. They can scan a long text or a set of related texts
in order to find specific information.

Writing
Performance summary At level

The student can structure longer complex texts using a range of cohesive devices. They can synthesise and evaluate
familiar information and arguments from a number of sources. They can summarise opposing arguments in writing,
including supporting evidence. They can edit a text to make the style more neutral or formal. They can check and
correct spelling, punctuation and grammar mistakes in long written texts. They can present factual information in
an objective way in extended written discourse.

Listening
Performance summary At level

The student can understand summaries of data or research used to support an extended argument. They can
follow an animated conversation between two fluent speakers and identify key information in linguistically complex
conversations at natural speed. They can understand most TV news and current affairs programmes and the main
points of complex academic/professional presentations. They can recognise the language and strategies used when
a speaker is avoiding answering a question or when something is being said ironically. They can recognise repetition
of ideas through substitution, paraphrasing, etc in complex arguments.

Speaking
Performance summary Below level

The student can use single words and short set expressions appropriate to their immediate personal environment
and situation. They can say the sounds of the alphabet and read out numbers. They can spell out their personal
details.
