Activity
Ask students to work in pairs or small groups, with a
note-taker, to discuss the pictures and the answer the
questions on page 99. Set a time limit and round by
asking for feedback from each spokesperson.
Students should be aware that they are discussing
ideas and opinions, so they need to justify what they
say with reasoned arguments

Before closing, direct students’ attention to the


quotes on page 98 and ask: How many students think
Plenary: history is only facts? Do we need to study myths and
legends as history?

Homework
Find out information about mythical creatures or beasts that occur in traditional
cultural tales, or from stories that you know. Choose one and write about the
following:
 Its origin – where and when it first appears in folk tales or myths
 What it is like
 Why people feared it
 Whether we ever see it or hear about it nowadays
 If you think the creature really existed, and if so what it might have been.
