Challenges Faced by
Newcomer in Canada

Five Key Challenges and they influence a

newcomer, not for short term sometimes
relatively long term-even their motivation!
• Language
• Getting first and in-sector employment
• Cultural Shocks
• Isolation
• Weather

• Is there anything you wanted to add?

Overcoming Challenges-
Language

Each year, 30% of adult immigrants (about 28,000 people)

arriving in Ontario cannot communicate in either English or
French, and the remaining 70% have varying proficiency
(Government of Ontario).
Some options:
• Language Instruction for Newcomers in Canada-LINC Class
• Occupation-Specific Language Training (OSLT)
• Local Library (They Provide Free English Classes)
• Speaking Club (Toastmaster and alike)
• English as a Second Language (ESL)
• English Speaking/Language Circle

Overcoming the challenge of isolation and weather

publications/alone-in-canada

• Celebrate local festivals
• Participate in putlocks
• Start writing to friends and families
• Talk to your friends and family oversees
• Try enjoying the weather- create new hobbies
that you can do in summer, winter, or other
seasons to keep you moving with nature
Isolation-Impacts

One of the leading challenges for newcomers in Canada

is isolation. It has a direct impact on the mental health
and people start:
• Avoiding social interactions, including those that were
once enjoyable
• Canceling plans frequently and feeling relief when
plans are canceled
• Experiencing anxiety or panic when thinking about
social interactions
• Feeling distressed during periods of solitude
• Feeling dread associated with social activities
• Spending large amounts of time alone or with
extremely limited contact with others
• Watching tv and other things than utilizing time for
other progressive activity

When you know the depth of the gap, Hard skills are teachable abilities or skill sets that
then you can prepare for any challenges filling it. are easy to quantify. They are acquired in the
classroom, through books or other training materials,

Soft skills/ people skills/interpersonal skills are

subjective skills that are much harder to quantify.-
CareerOneStop

Elevator Speech

What is Elevator Pitch?

• An elevator pitch-also known as an elevator speech is a short synopsis of your person, professional and
educational background.
• An Elevator pitch is short and impactful information sharing from a job seeker to a prospective employer
as a tool of marketing their skills and offering their candidacy even during a brief elevator ride.
• This pitch should cover who the job seeker is, what s/he does, what s/he is looking for, and what s/he
can offer to the organization.

When do you use it?

• The elevator pitch can be used during the job fair/career expo/information session/networking sessions
when traffic needs moving and you don’t get enough time like in an ordinary situation.
• It is a powerful way to gain confidence in introducing to hiring/HR managers. Some people find it very
powerful when answering in the condensed form of the “tell me soothing about yourself” question
during the interview.
Self Learning/Reviews

• Write the 30 seconds elevator speech

• List three job titles that you want to apply
for
• List 10 companies they are hiring now what
you are looking for
• List 5 short term and 5 long term skills you
want to develop
• List 7 skills that you have and are on-
demand in the market
