friendship. Do you and your friends act in a caring way towards one another, do you respect them
and do they respect you, but most of all do you valuethe relationship and love spending time
together? Friendship is more than just hanging out together at lunch and gossiping about other
people. True friendship is when two people have mutual respect for one another, and really care
about the other’s feelings and dreams. You need to be honest with your friends. If there is ever a
time where you feel that you can’t tell them the truth, for fear that they will be mad or will not
understand, then they are not true friends. Friends share with each other important things that they
wouldn’t share with others. Friends also care about each other, stick up one another and enjoy
spending time together.

As you grow and mature your friends may change, but that doesn’t mean
that you have to do away with your old friends, your relationships may
change though. Pay close attention to the different types of friends you
have had- the way your friends treat you, what sort of things you can talk
about, and the things you like to do. Soon you will see what qualities in a
friend are most important to you. Not everyone values openess or honesty,
when others look for an extraordinarily caring individual as a friend.
Whatever it is that you value most, make sure that your needs as well as
your friends are being met. If you are feeling neglected or mistreated by a
"friend" then you need to look more closely at this relationship. Friendship
should bring you joy not misery. Find out what you want out of a
friendship, and try not to be overtaken by those around you who are not
yet mature enough to commit to a true friendship.

Friendship is a big statement. Lots of people are lovers but are not friends. Lots of people are
relatives and are not friends. Lots of people who work together are not friends. You can appreciate
or admire someone, but that doesn’t not mean that you make him or her a friend.
When I had my near-death illness last year and the following long recuperation. I had a lot of
time to think about what makes someone a friend. If they are scared of you when you need help,
sorry, that is not frindship. If their attitude is “for better or worse”, if they stick to you through
troubles and difficulties, it is the time when you can tell it is true friendship. I do have some
friends, but not as many as I thought. And there was a time, in the late 80s when my friend, Ken,
really needed me but I didn’t come through for him. I remember hanging out in my happy
suburban house in Menlo Park, and not coming to help him through the loss of his wife. Luckily, I
got to apologize for that but Ken said he did not mind.
I don’t have a tidy answer about Ken and me and friendship. Sometimes we were friends, and
other times, clearly not. But I guess there is something remarkable in two people overcoming the
barriers to friendship to find some real communication at some point.
148. According to the writer ____________.

It’s been over 2 years now, but I still remember every detail of that day. It was a
beautiful warm sunny clear sky day. I had to go to work and then had class at Hunter College
that night. Little did I know what would wait me that morning. When I got off my car, I
found that the building was being evacuated and no one could tell me why. I could not find
anyone that I worked with. There were hundreds of people just gathering around. No one
knew exactly what had happened. Then someone said that there was a timing bomb in the
building and the police were trying to dispose it. I thought that I should have turned around
and tried to go home but a police officer forced us to keep our place. They were looking for
the terrorists. Suddenly the building exploded in a burst of white clouds of billowing smoke
and slowly started to collapsed downwards. The same officer who had directed us to stand

debris fallout. Most of us made it out, some did not. The world went totally black and
soundless, I never heard the building fall, I could not see, not hear, nor feel, just smell and
taste were left. I couldn’t breathe or think, nothing, the world just disappeared in an instant. I

I will never forget it, the time when I first worked as a teacher. On the first day of my
career, I really wanted to make a good impression on my students, so I made a good
preparation for everything and I had chosen my best clothes. My students seem to listen to
me attentively but they really looked at me with a funny look on their face, but I dismissed
these thoughts from my head and try to explain the lesson as well as possible.
Before getting into my car, I stopped to use the restroom down the hall. When I looked
at my reflection in the mirror, I almost died. All over the front of me, in my hair and on my
purse was a white chalky substance that wouldn’t come off. The harder I tried to rub it, the
grayer and dirtier it looked. I was absolutely mortified, thinking about the first impression I
had made. I bracked my brains to think of what I could have gotten all over me and how
could I have not noticed it before I went into the meeting? Then I realized what had
happened.
We are renovating our house, and the dry wall had just been sanded. I must have put
my purse down in a big pile of dust from the dry wall. Then I probably picked it up, hugged
it against my chest as I went to work. I just stood in the restroom, staring at the mirror,
horrified. I wondered what those students must have thought about me. What a first
impression I had just made!

The United Nations has proclaimed December 1st as World AIDS Day, December 3rd
International Day of Disabled Persons, and December 5th as the International Volunteer Day.
For the last few years, in early December, organizations that involve disabled people and
various agencies have organized meetings and exchange programmes to mark the three days
in Vietnam.
This year UN agencies, the Hanoi Disabled People’s Association and similar
organizations will hold an exchange programme called “For the Love of Life” on December
3rd at Thong Nhat park in Hanoi. The event is also in line with the UN General Assembly’s

response to the call of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the
Pacific(UNESCAP).

IV. READING
Education in Bolivia, as in many areas of Bolivian life, has a divide between Bolivia’s
rural and urban areas. Rural illiteracy levels remain high, even as the rest of the country
becomes increasingly literate. This disparity stems partly from the fact that many children
living in rural areas are forced to contribute economically to their family households and thus
are much less likely to attend school. On average, children from rural areas attend school for
4.2 years, while children in urban areas receive an average of 9.4 years of education. A
gender divide also exists. Females, on average, receive about 1.5 years less schooling than
males. The female illiteracy rate is 19.6 % while that for males is 7.4%. The country’s
illiteracy level as a whole, 13 – 14%, is comparably higher than in other South American
countries. The problems with Bolivian education are not necessarily attribytable to lack of
funding. Bolivia devotes 23% of its annual budget to educational expenditures, a higher
percentage than in most other South American countries, albeit from a smaller national
budget. A comprehensive, seven – year plan of education reform has made some significant
changes. Initiated in 1994, the plan decentralized educational funding in order to meet
diverse local needs, improved teacher training and curricula, and changed the school grade
system. Resistance from teachers’ unions, however, has slowed implementation of some of
the intended reforms.

Direct attacks on illiteracy take two main forms, adult education and the establishment
of public schools with compulsory attendance for children. In many countries, there are
certain programs which have been instituted to fight adult illiteracy, and universal public
education has almost eliminated illiteracy among the young. Soldiers have been appointed
effectively as instructors for the public.

seen as a problem until after the invention of printing in the 15 th century. The first significant
decline in illiteracy came with the Reformation, when translation of the Bible into the
vernacular became widespread and Protestant converts were taught to read it. Revolutionary
political movements from the 18th to the 20th century generally included an attack on illiteracy
as one of their goals, with the former Soviet Union, China, and Cuba being among the most
successful in the 20th century.

[1] The topic in class that night was the question of why the illiteracy rate among local
women was so high. That night, Huyet and her classmates learned that poverty, large families
and a priority to send boys to school instead of girls were the reasons for the inequality.
[2] She added that there were many difficulties, one of which was the fact that curricula
hadn’t been compiled and the classroom was shared with the primary school. “However, it

Completing a marathon is considered very difficult, but many coaches believe that it is
possible for anyone who is willing to put in the time and effort. Obviously, most participants
don’t run a marathon to win. More important for most runners is their personal finish time
and their placement within their specific age group and gender. Another very important goal
is to break certain time barriers. For example, ambitious recreational first-timers often try to
run the marathon under 4 hours, more competitive runners will attempt to run under 3 hours.
Many runners then prefer to finish for example in 3:29:59, which makes them “sub-3:30h
marathoners”, instead of 3:30:01.
For most runners, the marathon is the longest run they have ever attempted. Many
coaches believe that the most important element in marathon training is the long run.
Recreational runners commonly try to reach a maximum of about 20 miles in their longest
weekly run and about 40 miles a week in total when training for the marathon. More
experienced marathoners may run a longer distance. During marathon training, adequate
recovery times is crucial. If fatigue or pain is felt, it is recommended to take a break for a
couple of days or more to let the body heal. Overtraining is a condition that results from not
getting enough rest to allow the body to recover from difficult training. It can actually result
in a lower endurance and speed and place a runner at a greater risk of injury.
