Electrical Schematics

Schematics contain many different symbols, charts, tables, and other information.
You must understand the meaning of these in order to properly use an electrical
schematic.

• Distribute schematics to Schematics are basically line drawings that explain how a system works by using
participants or display a symbols and connecting lines. Symbols are used to represent devices or components
schematic on the screen/board. of both simple and complex electrical and electronic systems. Schematic symbols
are used extensively in Caterpillar publications for diagnosing electrical concerns.
Although there are many electrical symbols used in circuit diagrams, this illustration
shows some of the more common Caterpillar electrical symbols.

Schematics are used by technicians to determine how a system works and to assist
in the repair of a system that has failed.

• A complete list of Electrical Schematic symbols present a great deal of information in a small amount of space
Schematics is available in and the reading of schematic symbols requires highly developed skills and practice.
REHS0440. A logical step-by-step approach to using schematic diagrams for troubleshooting
begins with the technician’s understanding of the complete system.

Caterpillar electrical schematics contain very valuable information. The information is

printed on the front and back side of the schematic. The technician needs to become
very skilled in reading and interpreting all the information contained on both sides of
the schematic.

• FRONT of the schematic features Some of the features on the front of the schematic include:

• Color codes for circuit identification

Component Grouping Borders / Dashed Lines

• Component Grouping Borders Component Grouping Borders (arrow) are dashed lines used to identify the circuitry
replace multiple styles of and components according to physical location or functional grouping. As the
dashed lines for simplification of illustration above shows, Component Grouping Borders will be labeled for the group
schematics they depict—in this case components located on the roof of an M-Series Motor
Grader. Dashed lines may also identify a component or grouping that is available as
an attachment.

Some Cat machines use a new format for electrical system schematics. The new
format is called PRO/E and provides additional information for wire, connector,
component, and splice symbols.

This new format includes the circuit identification number (169; more commonly
referred to as wire number), harness identification code (H), the wire number in the
harness (5), insulation color code (PK), and the wire size (18). Wire sizes that are
not labeled will be #16 AWG.

NOTE: The codes shown are examples of the new identification system.
Consult the appropriate electrical schematic for more detailed and accurate
information.

The previous method of component labeling on a schematic shows the descriptive
name and the component part number. The schematics drawn in PRO/E format
contain a harness identification letter (H), a serializing code (P-12) where “P” stands
for part and “12” stands for harness position (number “12” part in harness “H”), and
the component part number (113-8490).

The PRO/E format for splices uses two connection points to indicate on which side
a given wire exits. The previous splice symbol used a simple filled in dot to indicate
a splice.

The new format shows that harness “G”, Wire 405-G9 GY-16 is spliced into two
wires, “405-G7 GY-18” and “405-G14 GY-18.”

Navigating Schematics

Navigating schematics can be a challenge. This lesson will provide the knowledge
necessary to effectively navigate an electrical schematic.

Successfully navigating schematics in SIS will be a tremendous asset to you as you

perform electrical diagnostics.

The following pages will focus on:

• Tracing a circuit from start to finish

• Utilizing the Find feature in Adobe Acrobat Reader
• Utilizing the Collage Schematic function
• Recognizing the Adobe Acrobat hot key features

Zoom Function

When viewing a schematic, there are several different ways to zoom in and out in
order to better view the particular part of the schematic you want to look at or to help
you follow a wire:

• On your keyboard, you can click and hold the “Ctrl” button and either
the “+” button to zoom in, or the “-” button to zoom out of the schematic.
• You can zoom in on an area by using the Marquee Zoom (1) feature.
This allows you to click and drag a box to define a zoom area.
• Dynamic Zoom (2) allows you to use your mouse wheel to zoom in and
out.
• You can zoom in and out by clicking the decrease or increase zoom
buttons (3).
• You can select a zoom percentage (4).

Finally, wire C468 arrives at the Eng Oil Level Switch (1) through highway L43.

Caterpillar schematics are designed in such a way that, once the desired circuit is
located, it is easy to follow it from beginning to end.

Find Function

A helpful tool, which will aid you as you try to locate a specific item in the schematic,
is the Find function. To access the Find function, you can click on the binocular icon
(1) or use CTRL+SHIFT+F simultaneously on the keyboard. The Find Text function
is similar to a top to bottom and left to right search.

You can also use the Find window (2) to find items on the schematic. Type your
search criteria, such as “oil level sw.” Click the Find Previous button (3) or the
Find Next button (4) to look for oil level sw on the schematic. “Oil level sw” will be
highlighted on the schematic (5).

Please keep in mind that the find text function does not start at the beginning of a
wire and stop at the end. The Find Text function is similar to a top to bottom and left
to right search.

It is also important to note that the term you are trying to find will likely appear in
several spots on the schematic; so you may have to click Find Next to cycle through
them until you find the exact location.

Collage Schematics

A collage schematic contains the same information as the main schematic. The
collage schematic is divided into letter-size illustrations that enable the user to print
out only the sections/pages needed.

Collage schematics can be assembled to create a complete main schematic. Adobe

Acrobat Reader is required to view all schematics.
