SUBJECT: Servicing MTB/HTB Retarder Main Control Valve Body, Output Retarder Housing,
and MTB Output Retarder Adapter Housing

EQUIPMENT AFFECTED: MTB/HTB

AFFECTED SERIAL NUMBERS: All

Three new kits have been released to commonize the parts required to service the output retarder section
of MTB and HTB transmissions. P/N 29536119 is the service replacement kit for the MTB and HTB output
retarder housing. P/N 29536120 is the service replacement kit for the MTB and HTB retarder main control valve body.
P/N 29536122 is the service replacement kit for the MTB retarder adapter housing.
Kit P/N 29536119 to replace the output retarder housing contains the following parts:

Name P/N
Instruction Sheet No. 280 29536864
Housing Assembly 29536117
Cup Plug 23018536
Output Speed Sensor Plug 23017298
O-ring 23017303
Speed Sensor Retainer 8627650
Bolt, 5⁄16-18 x 3⁄4 23015458

When using kit 29536119 to replace an output retarder housing on an MTB 643, 653, 654, or 647, install 23017303 O-ring
onto 23017298 plug and use 8627650 retainer and 23015458 bolt to secure plug into speed sensor opening in housing.
This is not required on an MTB 648. The housing is now ready for the necessary further assembly.

When using kit 29536119 to replace an output retarder housing on an HTB model transmission, install 23018536 cup plug
into hole No. 9 on housing as shown in Figure A (see Instruction Sheet No. 280). This plug is not required on any MTB
models. The replacement housing is now ready for the necessary further assembly.

NOTE: HTB kit information is for electronic HT transmissions only.

Kit P/N 29536120 to replace the main retarder control valve body contains the following parts:

Name P/N
Instruction Sheet No. 281 29536865
Valve Body 23015934
Reducing Fitting — Straight 29536116
Reducing Fitting — 90 Degree 29536121

When replacing the main control valve body on an MTB using kit 29536120, first drill the lube orifice out from 2.62 mm
to 3.5 mm as shown in Figure B (see Instruction Sheet No. 281). Clean thoroughly and install 90 degree reducing fitting
29536121 in the FROM CONVERTER port on the valve body and the straight reducing fitting 29536116 into the
TO LUBE port on the valve body. The replacement main control valve body is now ready for the necessary further
assembly and installation on an MTB model transmission.
When replacing the valve body on an HTB using kit 29536120, use the valve body as is. The reducing fittings are not
required.
Kit 29536122 to replace the MT output retarder adapter housing contains the following parts:

Name P/N
Instruction Sheet No. 282 29536866
Adapter Housing And Sleeve Assembly 23012993
Plugs (4) 23018209
Plugs (2) 23018206

When using kit 29536122 to replace an output retarder adapter housing on an MTB model transmission, install and torque
the six plugs as shown in Figure C (see Instruction Sheet No. 282). The replacement retarder adapter housing is now ready
for the necessary further assembly and installation.
The servicing of the HTB retarder adapter housing currently remains unchanged from current practices.
No kit will be released for retarded adapters for HT transmissions.
