spirit were obviously more important to the writer than her name, because nowhere in the text is found any
evidence of a name given by the author. "a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised" v.30

She is valuable to her husband. She is not only his helpmate and the mother of his children, but her actions show A Vision for the Future - "she can laugh at the days to come." v.25

He benefits from her - "lacks nothing of value" v.11
He is affirmed by her - "She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life." v.12 May God give us churches with women of value, virtue and vision, and may God help us to honor those who
have blessed us through their loving sacrifice of time, toil and tears.

GOD ASSIGNED A SPECIAL ROLE FOR WOMEN IN THE
CHURCH
There is a great deal of confusion today as to woman's role both in the home and in the
church. This uncertainty provides a good opportunity to study afresh what the Bible teaches
on the subject. As the church is the pillar and ground of the truth (1 Tim. 3:15), it is most
important that the church reflect Biblical truth about woman's role.
HOW JESUS DEALT WITH WOMEN
A good place to begin a study of woman's role in the church is with the earthly ministry of
Jesus. We understand, of course, the church did not begin while Jesus was on earth (Matthew
16:18), but after he ascended into Heaven (Mark 9:1; Acts 1:8; Acts 2:1-4). Nevertheless, we
can learn something about women's role in the church by studying how Jesus considered
them during his earthly ministry.We know that none of the apostles were women (Matt. 10:2-
4). However, some of Jesus' closest disciples were women. Luke 8:2-3 mentions Mary
Magdalene, Joanna, Susanna, and "many others" who helped provide financial support for
Jesus and the apostles as they went about preaching. Later, when the apostles fled the
crucifixion scene in fear, certain faithful and sorrowing women remained to watch his death on
the cross (Matt. 27:55-56).
From these and other references in the Gospels we learn that Jesus in no way dealt with
women as being inferior to men as far as being his disciples was concerned. In selecting men
rather than women to be his apostles, he did make some distinction in the roles men and
women should fill. These two basic principles, i.e., (1) equality of worth in Christ's sight, and
(2) difference in role assignments for men and women, were clearly taught in the early church,
and should, or course, be reflected in the church today.
WOMAN'S ROLE IN THE CHURCH
When the church began on the Day of Pentecost, women, as well as men, came into it in
great numbers (Acts 5:14). There were no distinctions made in conditions of membership
between the sexes. Furthermore, the importance of women to the whole church is reflected by
the concern which the early church had for widows who needed care and help (Acts 6:1-6).
The good works of women are frequently mentioned in Scripture. Dorcas is cited as an
example of faithful, loving service (Acts 9:36-39). Lydia is revealed as being a woman of great
hospitality, "constraining" Paul and his company to abide in her house (Acts 16:1-15). Phoebe
is described as a "servant of the church that is in Cenchreae" (Romans 16:10). The many
good works of women in the church is further reflected as Paul describes the qualifications for
women who were to devote full time to Christian work and to be supported by the church. In 1
Timothy 5:9-10 these qualifications included widowhood, being sixty or more years of age,
having no kin of their own to support them, and being "well reported of for good works." These
good works were then stated as (1) bringing up children, (2) showing hospitality to strangers,
(3) washing the saints' feet, (4) relieving the afflicted, and (5) diligently following every good
work.
Woman's role in the private teaching of God's Word is also referenced in Scripture. In Acts
18:26 Priscilla, with her husband, Aquila, privately taught a good, but misinformed preacher
(Apollos) "the way of God more accurately." Titus 2:4 commands older women to train
younger women in Christian living.
We all need a daily reset as women in Christ! We must have to learn truth and grace from
God’s Word that will reset our spiritual life. Learn to connect the way you live with what you
believe.

Facing Fear! Trusting God! (2 Timothy 1:7)
The theme “Facing Fear! Trusting God!” and it is based on 2 Timothy 1:7, “for God gave us a spirit not of fear but
of power and love and self-control.”  This verse is powerful because in it God tells us that we do not have to be
afraid.  Did you catch that or did it fly right past you?  Let me say it again, God tells you that you do not have to
be afraid.  But what about sickness?  What about death?  What about terrorism?  What about the economy?
What about my job?  What about my house?  What about my family? The list could go on and on because there
is no limit to situations that tempt us to be afraid.  While all of these things are important, none of these situations
mentioned or not mentioned is cause for the Christian to fear.  Let’s discover together why this is true.
Not a Spirit of Fear
First, notice that God does not take credit for the spirit of fear. “Spirit of fear” speaks of fearfulness and timidity.  It
is cowardice in the face of hostility.  In Timothy’s case it was the fear of an unknown future that did not include
Paul helping him in the ministry.  Paul wrote this letter to Timothy shortly before he was executed for preaching
the necessity of faith in Jesus Christ. Timothy, no doubt, was fearful of losing his father in the faith, Paul.  He was
afraid of ending up in a prison similar to Paul and afraid of receiving the same sentence of death as Paul.
Timothy felt as if he had much to fear.  Paul writes to Timothy, speaking the truth in love (Eph 4:15), to tell him
that the fear he is experiencing is not from God therefore it must be resisted.
Spirit of Power
God has not given us a spirit of fear, but the Holy Spirit (2 Cor 5:5).  One characteristic of the Holy Spirit is
power.  This power is mighty and strong.  The Holy Spirit was powerful at the moment of Creation as He “was
hovering over the face of many waters” (Gen 1:2).  It was “by the Spirit of God that [Jesus] cast out demons”
(Matt 12:28).  It was by the Spirit of God overshadowing Mary that she was able to conceive Jesus without ever
knowing a man (Luke 1:35).  It was the Spirit of God that rushed upon the timid, fearful disciples and transformed
them into bold apostles.  Peter, for example, went from being fearful and cowardly in the presence of a servant
girl to being bold and powerful before the Jewish religious leaders as he proclaimed “Let all the house of Israel
therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified” (Acts
2:36).  The Holy Spirit brings power, not fear.
Spirit of Love
God has not given us a spirit of fear, but the Holy Spirit.  Another characteristic of the Holy Spirit is love.  Jesus
said in John 15:12, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” This point is very
important and 1 John 4:13-21 explains it perfectly:
By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and
testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of
God, God abides in him, and he in God. So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us.
God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By
is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are
we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and
whoever fears has not been perfected in love. We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, “I love God,”
and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God
whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his
brother.
The Holy Spirit, who is given to us, gives us confidence (not fear) in this world because He gives
confidence in the Day of Judgment. This perfect love of God casts out all fear because “there is no
condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus” (Rom 8:1).
Spirit of Self-Control
God has not given us a spirit of fear, but the Holy Spirit.  The last characteristic of the Holy Spirit
mentioned here is Self-Control (or Sound mind).  The Spirit of God gives power and love and also
brings self-control by transforming you to become more like Christ.  Romans 8:29 tells us that those
who are foreknown by God are “predestined to be conformed into the image of His Son.”  The Holy
Spirit works in us to preserve us daily and help us to live a life that is pleasing to God.  We read in
Jude 1:24, “to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the
presence of his glory with great joy.”  We are not afraid but work boldly and confidently knowing that if
we are united with Christ “we are more than conquerors” (Rom 8:37) because “He who is in you is
greater than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4).
Being a young Christian today is something really incredible. In the middle of a dark
and evil world, you can shine as a light! But as young people we experience temptation – we
are definitely very drawn by our lusts. Luckily for us we are fully equipped to overcome every
single temptation! The Bible is full of hopeful, encouraging, strengthening verses for young
people, some of which we’ve collected here as a reminder of the possibilities that are open to
us. If you put your faith in these words, and are obedient to them, you will experience amazing
things!
“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people,
that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous
light.” 1 Peter 2:9.
The Lord is with you!
“Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid … for the Lord your God, He is the
One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6.
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of
evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11.
“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who
will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also
make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13.
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13.
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let
your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all
understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7.
“And to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be
weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but those who wait on the Lord shall
renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be
weary, they shall walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:29-31.
“For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on
behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.” 2 Chronicles 16:9.
Give it your all!
“Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in
love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” 1Timothy 4:12.

“Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and
with all your mind.’” Matthew 22:37.
“Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace, with those who call on
the Lord out of a pure heart.” 2 Timothy 2:22.
 “Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong.” 1 Corinthians 16:13.
“I have written to you, young men (and women!), because you are strong, and the word of
God abides in you, and you have overcome the wicked one.” 1 John 2:14.
Use the Word!
“How can a young man (or woman!) cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word.
With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from your commandments!
Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” Psalm 119:9-11.
1 Timothy 4:12 Meaning of Do not Let Anyone Look down on You Because You Are Young
1 Timothy 4:12
“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the
believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and purity.”
Timothy was Paul’s apostolic delegate, having been left in various places by the Apostle to
continue acting on his behalf and completing the set up the churches that Paul helped to
plant. Timothy was to continue teaching the churches and help them appoint elders to govern
and shepherd the people in them.
Timothy was relatively young compared to some of those he was tasked with pastoring, and it
may have been an issue that he had written or spoken with Paul about previously. Paul’s
instruction to him was to disregard his age, or what people thought of it, and focus on his way
of being, setting an example for anyone who would have the eyes to see it for what it was and
follow him.
Many have sought out a position in the Church for one reason or another, seeking to self-
promote (Phil 2:3) and gain a following. But the right thing for any serious Christian would be
to heed the instructions here to Timothy, which don’t apply only to shepherds in God’s Church,
but to all who would be disciples.
#1 “Don’t let anyone look down on you…”
This could be misunderstood. How does one prevent all others from looking down on him or
her? Some would do it by fighting anyone who seems to slight them. Others would do it by
constantly trying to prove themselves. But what is required here has nothing to do with what
others actually do. “Looking down on you” is the problem of the one looking down. To “let
them” one must take offense. As Christians, we have every reason in the world to look to God,
and not man (Gal 1:10) for our value. We can be no good to anyone until we have obeyed
God and accepted ourselves for what we are intrinsically. It dishonors our Maker to do
anything less.
#2 “…because you are young,”
The argument is not without merit that wisdom comes with age. Apparently, this was the
source of the opposition to Timothy. They thought he was too young to have the authority that
he had. If he was, then his life would prove that. Youth is not in itself a barrier to responsibility.
Today’s youth are waiting longer and longer to take life seriously, and we would do well to
help them take their place as contributing adults much earlier than what is normal today.
#3 “but set an example for the believers…”
This is biblical leadership. What could Timothy do about those who disrespected his age?
Nothing. Nothing except to go on doing what he should be doing: seeking first the Kingdom of
God and his righteousness. Living for Jesus and being righteous in him will give others an
example to imitate (1 Cor 11:1), requiring no coercion or “Lording over” (Mt 20:25) others.
#4 “in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.”
While this is a well-rounded list, it is comprehensive in the third quality, love. When asked
what was the greatest commandment, Jesus answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your
heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest
commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Mt 22:37-38), and
that all the law and prophets are summed up in it (40). To follow Jesus, we must seek to love
this way, and so set an example for others to follow. Great reward will come to those who get
to Heaven to find out that someone else is there because they followed his or her example.
ACT LIKE MEN – 1 CORINTHIANS 16:13-14
Day, our passage for this week is a point where Paul speaks from his heart to men. In 1 Corinthians 16:13-
14, he says, “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.  Let all that you do be done in
love.” His word of encouragement shows us five characteristics of a godly man.
Be Watchful
As men, we have to be aware of what is going on around us. Jesus said, “If the blind guide the blind, both
will fall into a pit” (Matt. 15:14). Most men are asleep. We need to be attentive. We need to know the
condition of our life, our family, and the world around us. We need to know what is going on in our wife’s life
and kid’s lives. If you continue the road you are on, what will your marriage and family look like in five
years? There are many passages in Scripture that tell us to be watchful. Run from anything that tries to rob
you of your vision. Jesus gave sight to the blind!  You need to see spiritually. Without vision people perish.
Where are you going? Through the good times and bad, maintain your focus.
Stand Firm
The second thing listed in 1 Corinthians 16:13 is to stand firm. Don’t ride a spiritual rollercoaster.
High/low, up/down, on/off, hot/cold. Don’t waver or retreat. Specifically, Paul says to stand
firm in the faith. Real men read the Word of God daily. We build our lives on the Word of God.
There are ten doctrines in the Bible: Bible, God, Jesus, Holy Spirit, Sin, Salvation, Church,
Christian Life, Angels/ Demons, and End Times. We need to know what we believe about these
things. Leaders take a stand.  We must have compassion and love for those we disagree with.
Compassion is not compromised. We should show respect and love to everyone, but there are
some basic truths on which we stand.
Grow Up
The next phrase is “act like men.” Some translations say, “be courageous” or “be brave. What is a
man? Doing what you say you will do. Not making excuses. The word used in the original Greek
means to behave like a man. The only place it’s found in the New Testament is here. As the
context suggests, the idea has to do with courage and bravery. Manhood is about responsibility.
Men are given a charge to lead, provide for, and protect women and children. Jesus came to this
earth as a man. He grew in wisdom, stature, in favor with God and man. As a man, Jesus
exemplifies and empowers us to walk in His steps, to live as He lived, to act like a man. Jesus is a
man’s man. He made a whip and drove out the con artists and swindlers. He stood up for a
woman caught in adultery. He called the Pharisees snakes. In the book of Revelation, Jesus is
riding a white stallion, with a sword and a robe dipped in blood. His name is called The Word of
God and all the armies in heaven follow Him. He will strike the nations and He Himself will rule
them with a rod of iron.
Be Strong
Some men think that being a man means bench-pressing 300 pounds, dunking a basketball, or
killing a bear with your bare hands. 1 Corinthians 10:12 says,“Therefore let him who thinks he
stands take heed lest he fall.” Godly men admit their own weaknesses and are strong in the Spirit.
Jesus does not just giveus strength, He is our strength. We all have weaknesses. It is not a sin to
be tempted. Sin is when you yield to temptation . We have to be strong. The devil knows what
“Delilah” to send your way. Real men exercise self-control by being under the Spirit’s control.
In Love
Verse 14 says, “Let all that you do be done in love.” We need real men who are in love with Jesus,
their wife, their kids, God’s Word, the church, and things of God. Men who are not angry, violent,
crude, rude, or abusive. Tell your wife, son, daughter, you love them. Some men say, “The Bible,
Jesus, and church is for women and children.” The Bible is for men. Jesus is the ultimate man.
Jesus was compassionate and courageous in all that He did. Tough and tender. In 1 Corinthians
13, the love chapter, Paul says, “If I have not love I am nothing.” Without love you would become
militant.
Jesus is the perfect example of a godly man. God became man. He faced work, fatigue, rejection,
religion, friends, was misunderstood by family, etc. Jesus was tempted, and He overcame!

Learning to Live in the Present
As teens, we spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about our futures. We plan for
college, look at future jobs. We wonder what it will be like to live on our own, fantasize about
getting married or having a family.
Yet, we often forget in all that planning that we are living in the present. It's easy at the end of
each year to get caught up in reflection or in plotting out our future. These New Year's Bible
verses remind us that we also have to live in the present:
Matthew 6:33-34 - But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will
be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry
about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.  (NIV)
Philippians 4:6 - Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what
you need, and thank him for all he has done. (NLT)
Isaiah 41:10 - Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I
will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.  (NLT)

Let God Guide Your Future

One thing the New Year does is make us think about our future. Most of the time, celebrating
the New Year at least makes us think about our plans for the next 365 days. However, we
cannot forget whose hand needs to be in our future plans. We may not always understand
the plans God has for us, but these New Year's scripture verses remind us:
Proverbs 3:6 - In all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.  (NIV)
Jeremiah 29:11 - "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper
you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."  (NIV)
Joshua 1:9 - Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do
not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.  (NIV)
