Grade 10 Lesson Functions 2
Grade 10 Lesson Functions 2
Subject: Mathematics
Grade: 10
Date: May 2021
Topic: Functions
Reference Material: Textbook (Mathematics: A Complete Course,
Volume 1 by Raymond Toolsie)
Specific Objectives: At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Explain what is meant by the image of 𝑥
2. Calculate the image of 𝑥
3. Identify what makes a function undefined.
4. Find the value of 𝑥 that would make a function undefined.
Image of 𝐱
For a function 𝑓 and any element 𝑥 in the domain of 𝑓, the image of x is
denoted by 𝑓(𝑥), where 𝑥 and 𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑥) are variables. We can use the
function notation to determine the image of 𝑥, i.e., the value of 𝒇(𝒙) for
a given value of 𝒙.
Therefore,
= 2(9) + 9 + 1

= 18 + 9 + 1
= 28.
i) 𝑔(2)
𝑔(2) = 4(2) + 5

Sometimes, letters, other than f, are used. The most common are
f, g, and h.

4. Given that 𝑔(𝑥 ) = 7𝑥 − 10, Evaluate:
i) 𝑔(1) + 𝑔(0)
ii) 𝑔(−4) + 𝑔(3)
iii) 𝑔(5) + 𝑔(0)
