PAKISTAN NAVY ENGINEERING COLLEGE – NUST

SPRING SEMESTER 2022

SUBJECT: Electronic Devices & Circuits CLASS: S-IV-EE
Issue date: 19 April 22 Submission Date: 20 May 2022

OPEN ENDED PROBLEM

Problem Definition
Most of the modern devices are run by the batteries. A battery stores the charge and
then supply that charge to power up any electronics device. Though batteries are handy
to use, their use need some precautions too. A major problem with the use of batteries
is over charging. It is possible that over charging can cause battery to lose ability to
recharge again or even the battery can explode due to overcharging.
The battery must be disconnected from the charger circuit once the peak terminal
voltage is detected or the battery is once fully charged therefore, there should be a
protection circuit which can monitor the level of charging of the battery by detecting the
terminal voltage and protect the battery from over-charging by cutting off the battery
connection with the charger.

A Required to develop Overcharged protective Battery charging circuit

(WK3,WK4,WK6) which will detect the upper limit of the terminal voltage of a
battery(WK4) by use of a engineering fundamentals (WK3)techniques discuss in
Electronic Devices & Circuit course (WK4). When peak voltage of a battery is reached;
will cut off the battery connection with the load device by the use of a Relay. The circuit
includes an LED indicator section also which will light up the LED as the battery charges
to peak value and does not require recharging

Design Requirement
In this OEP, you are required to simulate and develop Overcharged protective Battery
charging circuit.

Design Verification
The design of your project must be appropriately supported by relevant theory and
engineering fundamentals. The design parameters have to be justified with software
simulation.

Deliverables
 Detailed explanation of your proposed circuit, commenting on your choice of
components and the configuration in which you have connected them.
 Perform the simulation of a circuit by using any related engineering software.
 Develop a hardware on circuit board
 Display the results in a form of waveform/values at different sections of a project.
 Submit project report that covers relevant theories, fundamental principles and
justification for chosen circuit configuration.

WPs and WKs

We explore how a few WP’s are addressed through this project

 WP1: Depth of knowledge covers the following aspects:

 Knowledge of engineering fundamentals of electronics devices & circuits to
understand the problem definition (WK3,WK4)
 Development of proposed circuit (WK6)
 WP2: Range of Conflicting requirements:
 Development of detailed circuit using the techniques discussed in Electronic
devices & circuits course.
 Selection of the component to connect or disconnect input circuit to a load.
