LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET#1
Background Information for Learners
Good nutrition is very important in enhancing your quality of life and in preventing diseases. It
provides you with the needed energy boosters and nutrients for your maximum energy and wellness.
It’s worthy to note, however, that nutritional needs vary for each stage of life, so it is important to eat a
healthy diet through all life stages.
Early adolescence and adolescence periods are the times when growth spurt is the most visible
or obvious especially the physical constitution of a person. The physical changes during this stage
affect the body’s nutritional needs in the same way that changes in the lifestyle of an adolescent may
also affect his/her food choices and eating habits.
As an adolescent with active social life and busy schedules, you might often skip meals for
snacks throughout the day. You might also often skip breakfast, not knowing that this important meal
will give you the energy to make it through the day and to perform activities well in school. These
snacks may come from fast foods chains or “carinderias”. When you eat outside, your choices of foods
are often high in fats and sugar that provide less nutritional values. These eating practices are unhealthy
and are major risk factors in developing chronic diseases, such as heart diseases, diabetes and even
some types of cancer.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET #2

Nutrition During Adolescence

Background Information for the Learners

Adolescents need appropriate amounts of calories, proteins, minerals and vitamins to grow well. The
best way to ensure that they get what they need while maintaining a healthy weight is to provide a variety of
nutritious foods that are low in fat and sugar.

A balanced and healthy diet for adolescents is vital for their development. Here are some pointers for
their diet:

1. Aim for five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Adolescents can gradually build up to
this amount. A good goal to try is eat fruit with each meal for a week.
2. Reduce fat. Opt for low-fat substitutes instead, to ensure a fat-reduced/fat-free food intake without
getting short on the supply of energy-giving foods necessary for these adolescents’ activities.

3. Eat sugary foods in moderation only. If they follow a healthy diet, one sweet a day is fine.

4. Eat healthy snacks. Keep healthy foods on - hand for snacks.

5. Serve appropriate portions for meals and snacks. Oversized portions often contribute to
fast/rapid weight gain.

ACTIVITY 2. HAVE FUN WITH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES!
