Introduction to Fundamental Structural Design
Learning Outcomes:
1. Discussed the concept of structural design.
2. Gained confidence to convert units of measurement
Guide Questions:
1. What scaling is used to draw your Foundation Plan? In your Column Plan? Is there
difference in the scaling of the Foundation plan and Column Plan?
2. What specification have you included in developing your One – storey residential
house?
3. What have you inferred in developing Foundation Plan and Column Plan?
UNITS OF MEASUREMENTS
Do you know?
There are two (2) types of units in measurement namely (a) The English System and (b)
The Metric System?
1.1 The English System is composed of inches, foot or in feet. In writing an inch, it is in
fraction type. The symbol used in inches is (“) while (‘) in feet or foot.
Example: In inches- 1/8”, ¼”, ½”, ¾”, 1”, 1’
In foot – 1’, 2’, 3’
1.2 The Metric System of measurements is composed of, millimeters, centimeters and
meters. The symbols used in metric are:
mm. = millimeter
cm. = centimeter
m. = meter
dm. = decimeter
km. = kilometer
Do you know?
Writing the metric system of measurement is the same as writing a peso. For example,
¼ of a meter is equal to 25 centimeters or .25¢. Also, ½ of a meter is equal to 50 cm or .50 ¢,
while ¾ of a meter is equal to 75 centimeter is .75¢ and 1 meter is 1.00 peso.

Meter
The metric system has a decimal point. The first number before the decimal is meter,
the digit after the decimal point is decimeter, the 2nd digit after the decimal is centimeter, the
third digit after the decimal is millimeter and the last digit is tenth of millimeter.
Direction: Using the metric system, write the complete measurement of the given floor plan.

2. Have you clearly presented the elevation and section phases?
3. Were you able to indicate the detailed specification of the different
reinforcement bars in the residential house plan that you developed? Why did
you prefer to use these specification?
VIII. Reflection:
How important is it to understand the architectural symbols and annotation in
developing a house plan? Will it have implication in structural design of a house
plan? Support your answer
