Competency: Derives inductively the relationship of exterior and interior angles of a
convex polygon. (M7GE-IIIf-1)

Objectives: At the end of the week, you shall have

o defined exterior angle, remote interior angle, and adjacent interior angle;
o solved problems involving exterior and interior angles of a triangle as a convex polygon
using measurement and by inductive reasoning; and
o applied the relationship of exterior and interior angles of a convex polygon to real-life
context.

Learner’s Tasks

Lesson Overview

Suppose side OV of ∆ LOV is extended through point E as shown in the figure. The angle
formed which is ∠ LVE is called an exterior angle of ∆ LOV ∠ L and ∠O are called the remote
interior angles of the exterior angle ∠ LVE . ∠ LVOis called adjacent interior angle.

Definition of Exterior, Remote Interior, and Adjacent Interior Angles

Exterior Angle – is an angle which is adjacent and supplementary to one

of the angles of the triangle.
Remote Interior Angles – are angles which are not adjacent to the given
exterior angle of the triangle.
Adjacent Interior Angle – is an interior angle which forms a linear pair with
the given exterior angle.

Theorem 20: Exterior Angle Equality Theorem

The measure of an exterior angle is equal to the sum of its remote interior angles.

Example:
Find the measure of m ∠ FDE . F
67°

58°
E D A

Solution:
∠ FDE is the remote exterior angle of ∠ DFA and ∠ FA . Thus,
∠ FDE = m ∠ DFA + m ∠ FAD
∠ FDE = 67° + 58°
∠ FDE ¿ 125 °

Example:
Find the m∠ BDC ,∧m ∠ DBC in the figure below.
B

132 ° 28 °
A D C
Solution:
Solve for m∠ BDC :
m∠ ADB+ m∠ BDC=180 ° 132 °−132°+m ∠ BDC =180° −132°
132 °+ m∠ BDC =180° m∠ BDC=48 °
Solve for m∠ DBC : (Sum of opposite interior angle = exterior angle)
m∠ BDC +m∠ DBC =m∠ ADB
48 ° +m ∠ DBC=132°
48 ° −48 ° +m∠ DBC=132 °−48 °
m∠ DBC =84 °
To check:
132 °> 48 °
132 °> 84 °

Activity 3.
Given:
48° = degree angle of the ladder from the top of the wall
90° = degree angle of the wall from the ground
Let:
X = Exterior angle of the ladder from the ground
Solution:
X = 48° + 90°
X = 138° x
Therefore, 138° is the exterior angle of the ladder from the ground
