What is It

Communication Styles are aspects of communication that define the use

of appropriate language for a certain conversation. The type of relationship
and degree of formality in speaking are given emphasis to avoid
misunderstanding. Take note of the Five Classifications of Communication
Styles according to Martin Joos (1967):

1. Frozen or Static:
At this level, language is literally “frozen” in time and form. It does not
change. This type of language is often learned and repeated by rote.
Examples: Biblical Verses, prayers, preamble, oaths and others.

2. Formal
This style is impersonal and often follows a prescriptive format. The
speaker uses complete sentences, avoids slang and may use technical or
academic vocabulary.
Examples: Academic and Scientific publishing, Seminars, Forums,
standard for work, school and business.

3. Consultative
This style is used when consulting an expert such as doctors and lawyers.
The speaker uses more precise language and addresses the expert by a title
such as “Doctor” “Attorney” “Your Honor” “Mr.” and “Mrs.”
Examples: PTA meetings, Medical Assistance, Legal Counsels

4. Casual
This communication style is conversational in tone. Words are general
rather than technical and may include slang and colloquialisms.
Examples: Talking with friends and peers, acquaintances with same age
group

7
5. Intimate
The language used by lovers. It is the most intimate form of language. It is
best avoided in public and professional situations.
Examples: Family conversations, Husband and wife talking

Did you have a clear grasp of the given communication styles? These
questions will assess your understanding of the definitions above. Can you
answer it in 1-2 sentences? Write only the answers on your answer sheet.

1. What communication style is used during occasions like seminars and

lectures?
___________________________________________________________________
2. When can we use the intimate communication style?
___________________________________________________________________
3. When talking to people of the same age group about topics on fashion
trend, which style is best to apply?
___________________________________________________________________
4. Why do you think frozen communication style is repeated in form?
___________________________________________________________________

5. How is consultative style different from a casual communication style?

___________________________________________________________________

“Believing In Yourself”. As we live in this world, many exceptional and
mysterious things happen. Thus, we think a lot. We try to decipher

has given to us, but sadly, this can also be the most destructive ally.
Take a look on the monitor. (pointing to the wide screen in front).

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Of being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise.”

Joshua: You bet! See yah around!

15. Father: I have something in my mind, honey. Why don’t we put up a

business here?
Mother: What business? There are so many business establishments
