What does a Writer say about Literature?

When we hear the word literature, we automatically associate it with entertainment and

relaxation as if it is something that does not require a lot of focus and attention and is not worth

spending time on, unlike reading a Math or Science book. To have such a view regarding

literature is to underrate the efforts and works of great writers such as Shakespeare in his famed

Romeo and Juliet, and Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. To remove this way of thinking in the

popular, what does a writer have to say to prove that literature isn’t just for pause and relaxation?

For a writer, literature is more than just entertainment because it gives sense and meaning to the

human mind and heart through written words of truth, and every literary works are to be valued

and venerated like a scientific invention for it gives value to humanity through life experiences.

It is through the significant literary masterpiece written and recorded that humanity can

gain an understanding of the past, present, and future by creating connections and bridging gaps.

As science aids humanity with the use of medicine and treatment for healing, well-written

literature gives sense and meaning to the human mind and heart for a greater understanding of

humanity through written words of truth. As Greig said, literature is often seen "as a mere

luxury, mere entertainment, an affair for milksops, boobs and weaklings, something beneath the

notice of the serious-minded" (415). Any description beyond entertainment does not seem to fit

literature other than leisure and fun. This common knowledge about literature is something that

is arguable. "Literature is more than entertainment, more than a luxury in the life of a nation or

an individual; it is a practical necessity" (Greig 416). Indeed, literature is worth so much more

than being seen as only mere entertainment, and a writer's written literary piece is everyone’s

practical necessity in life. One example of a literary piece that contributed significantly to society

and today's world is the compilation of The Bible by various authors. The Bible, composed of the

Old Testament and the New Testament, is a collection of poetry, narrative stories, letters, and

visionary writings dating back a thousand years. This collection of books documents the history

of Christianity and the life, teachings, and mission of Jesus Christ.
