HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF PHYSICS
What is Physics?
 Is the study of everyday phenomenon. It aims to study these
phenomena in terms of the fundamental laws, or laws of nature.
 To be specific, Physics in the study of matter and energy and their
relationship.
Physics and the other fields of science
 Physics is a sub branch of Physical Science. It is considered as basic
science because it serves as the foundation of other sciences.
Astronomy makes used of physics in study of matter beyond earth.
Meteorology makes used of the heat and wave aspects of physics.
Biology used physics in its molecular aspects. Chemistry is unified with
physics through the concepts of energy.

2 BRANCHES OF PHYSICS

CLASSICAL PHYSICS MODERN PHYSICS

refers to the traditional topics refers to concepts in physics
in physics that were that have surfaced since the
recognized and developed beginning of the 20th
before the beginning of the 20th century. This branch is
century. These topics are mostly concerned with the
concerned with matter and behavior of matter and
energy under normal energy under extreme
conditions. conditions

Physics in more than just a natural philosophy

 Ancient Philosophers studied not only ethics, morality and the essence
of beings as determined by the mind, but also the natural world which
they called the NATURAL PHILOSOPHY.
 NATURAL PHILOSOPHY – refers to the study of natural phenomena
of nature. It is all about the natural world. The Greek word for natural is
physikos which is the origin of the word Physics.

ANCIENT PHYSICS: THE BIRTH OF NEW SCIENTIFIC ERA

 Physics was formerly known as NATURAL
PHILOSOPHY
 Elements of what became physics were drawn
primarily from the fields of astronomy. Because of
their curiosity about the celestial bodies, people
became aware and wanted to learn more about everything around
them, thus physics was born.

3 Greek Philosophers

SOCRATES PLATO ARISTOTLE

SOCRATES
 Socratic method
 Socrates has becomePage 2 of 7for his contribution to the field
renowned
of ethics which is a branch of philosophy that addresses
questions about morality.

PLATO
 Plato's main contributions are in philosophy, mathematics and
science.
 In his Republic, Plato talks of geometrical diagrams as imperfect
imitations of the perfect mathematical objects which they
represent.
 He also contributed to logic and legal philosophy, including
rhetoric.

ARISTOTLE
 Introduced Ether or Aether as the fifth element.
 Aristotle held that there were four kinds of causes: material
cause, formal cause, efficient or moving cause and the final
cause.
 Aristotle held more accurate theories on some optical concepts
than other philosophers of his day.

CLASSICAL PHYSICS: THE SECOND CHAPTER

Page
 Classical physics began in the late 3 of 7
1500’s.
 Newtonian mechanics, thermodynamics, and Maxwell's theory of
electromagnetism are all examples of classical physics.
 Many theories in classical physics break down when applied to
extremely small objects such as atoms or to objects moving near the
speed of light.
 Classical physics is also known as NEWTONIAN PHYSICS.

MODERN PHYSICS: AN ONGOING ENDEAVOR

 Modern physics started duringPage
the early
4 of 71900’s and continues until
now.
 The birth of modern physics began during the discovery of relativity by
Albert Einstein.
 Modern Physics is also known as Einsteinian Physics.
 Modern physics, concerns the nature and behavior of particles and
energy at the submicroscopic level. The term submicroscopic refers to
objects—such as atoms and electrons.

Recent studies in Physics

A breakthrough in quantum optics was achieved by a number of
physicists in the University of Waterloo, Canada along with the
University of Queensland.
Paul Dirac has formulated an equation for antimatter.
Professor Ronald Mallet has made crucial discoveries in the field of
time travel.
U.S., German and Austrian physicists are reporting unexpected
discovery of a simple "scaling" behavior in the electronic excitations
measured in a related material. The experiments, which were
conducted on magnetic heavy-fermion metals, offer direct evidence of
the large-scale electronic consequences of "quantum critical" effects.

Researchers are now pursuing plasmonics and photonics technology

for optical improvements.
Engineers have devised a new method for securing location sensitive
data by using quantum mechanics.
Scientists have also discovered that light, instead of electrodes could
control deformable mirrors.
A superconductor breakthrough has made that could revolutionize the
production of machines.
