JUSTICE C.K. THAKKER
Former Judge, Supreme Court of India
Justice Thakker was appointed as part-time Lecturer in Law in Sir L.A. Shah Law
College, Ahmedabad, in 1970 and continued as such until he was elevated to
Judge of the High Court of Gujarat on 21 June 1990. He was further promoted to
Chief Justice of High Court of Himachal Pradesh, Shimla on 5 May 2000 and
transferred as the Chief Justice of High Court of Judicature at Mumbai on 31
December 2001.
He was also Acting Governor of the State of Maharashtra from July to October
2002. Thakker was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of India on 7 June
2004.
We the whole team of NMIMS SoL Bengaluru is glad to have his Lordship as Chief
Guest for the event.

Virtual Moot Court
Nations across the world are bracing up their preparation to face the
challenges thrown by the coronavirus. India is also following the
impeccable measure of social distancing. But at the same time, we are
not standing apart; rather technology has enabled us to maintain our
life in both social as well as professional spaces. With the help of this
technological advancement The Moot Court Society of NMIMS
School of Law Bangalore felt honored and proud to organize National
Virtual Moot Court Competition 2020 in collaboration with M Mulla
Associates from 11 th – 13 th September 2020. The purpose of this
competition was to provide an opportunity to the young law students
to hone their skills in research, writing and pleading. Mooting is an
integral and important part of any Law School education. Along with
helping students learn subject matter of legislation, it also helps
students to understand the practical nuances of representing cases in
courts. The total number of teams that participated in this
competition was 254. Our Chief Guest for the inaugural ceremony
was Hon'ble (Retd.) Justice Kurian Joseph (Former Judge, Supreme
Court of India). And for the purpose of this competition, we had
collaborated with JJ& J Attorneys as our Law Firm Partner,
iValue as our Technology Partner, Anuj Tyagi as Patron, EBC and SCC
Online as Knowledge Partner, Virtual Law School as Academic
Coordinator, S & M Partners as Out Reach Partners, R&R Chambers as
Chamber Partner and LiveLaw as the Media Partner.

Virtual Moot Court
The quest for knowledge, wisdom and insight is part and parcel
of life. While the pandemic still roars on the edges, and everyone
is stuck at their homes, The Moot Court Society of NMIMS School
of Law, Bengaluru takes immense pleasure while announcing our
2nd National Virtual Moot Court Competition 2021 in association
with S.S.Rana & co.
The firm has been one of the leading torchbearers of the use of
technology in the legal profession. Being one of the first few law
firms in India to be ISO certified, the firm has invested heavily in
the use of technology to streamline and automate workflow
processes and has developed its own Enterprise Resource
Planning (ERP) software internally referred to as the IMS.

1. General instructions
1. Date- The date of the competition will be 1st – 3rd October, 2021.
2. Venue – ZOOM Cloud Meetings Application (The links and the schedule of the
meeting rooms shall be provided via mail after the submission of memorials)
3. Dress Code – Ladies: White shirt and black pant / black skirt along with black
coat. Gentlemen: White shirt, black trousers, black tie along with black coat.
4. Language – The language of the competition will be ENGLISH only
2. Definition
The following terms shall have the corresponding meanings unless otherwise
specified:
a) “Administrator” shall mean School of Law NMIMS, Bengaluru.
b) “Competition” shall refer to NMIMS’s 2nd National Virtual Moot Court
Competition, 2021
c) “Competition problem” shall refer to the facts and issues released by the
Organizing Committee (OC) of the competition with its clarifications and
corrections.
d) “Competition rules” shall refer to the official rules of the competition as
amended from time to time.
e) “IST” shall refer to Indian standard time.
f) “INR” shall refer to Indian National Rupee.
g) “Knock out round” shall refer to Quarter Finals, Semi-finals and Final rounds of
the competition.
h) “Memorial’ shall refer to the memorandum of written submissions submitted by
any participating team as per the Competition Rules.
i) “Court Room” shall refer to the online platform where the oral round shall take
place.
j) “Organizing Committee”(hereinafter to be referred as O.C.)shall refer to the
committee appointed for the administration and conduct of the competition
including any other authorized persons, and of all events leading up to the
competition.
k) “Official Email” shall refer to the official email id of the Moot Court Society
(MCS) NMIMS 2nd National Virtual Moot Court Competition, 2021, i.e.
mcs.sol@nmims.edu.in
l) “Participating Team” shall refer to the team that has registered itself for the
competition as per the rules given below.
3. Eligibility
All students enrolled bona fide in an undergraduate i.e., 3 years/ 5 years or post
graduate law program conducted by any college or university shall be eligible for
participation in the competition.
4. team composition
a) Each participating team shall comprise of minimum of two (2) members and
maximum of three (3) wherein two (2) members, shall be designated as Speakers and
one (1) member as Researcher (optional).
b) Each team will be given a unique team code number which will thereafter be the
identity of the team and its members.
c) In case of a three-member team, there shall be 2 speakers and 1 researcher in the
team.
d) In case of a two-member team, there shall be two speakers. No one would be the
researcher.
e) The teams shall identify the speakers and researcher in the registration form itself.
f) The team shall designate one of its members as the contact person in the
registration form and fill the required contact details of the same in the form.
g) The OC shall only contact the “Contact person” from the team for confirmation,
further notification and updates related to the competition.
h) Teams shall not disclose their identity whatsoever, except in the registration
form. Such disclosure shall result in disqualification subject to the discretion of
the Organizers.
i) There will be no substitution of team member after a team has submitted its
registration form, except in the case a registered member has an issue related to
covid-19, it would be left to the discretion of the organizing committee.
j) Only one team will be allowed to register per college in this competition.
k) Cross institutional teams are not eligible to participate in this competition.
6. memorial submission
b) Each team is required to prepare Memorials (written submissions) for both the
sides i.e. the Applicant and the Respondent.

m) The contents of the memorial should not be plagiarized (20% limit) or else it
will amount total deduction of memorial marks or disqualification. The decision
of the organizers shall be final.
7. rules for oral submission
a) It is mandatory for the researcher to be present in the courtroom (virtual) with
the speakers during the oral rounds and at no point of time the researcher shall be
allowed to speak or address the bench until asked by the judge.
b) The speakers can provide the copies of the compendium, only if the same is
permitted by the panel of judges in their respective court rooms.
c) The fixtures will be decided following the procedure of matchups by the
organizing committee.
d) Each team will be allotted sides (petitioner or respondent) via draw of lots.
e) In case of a tie, memorial marks shall be considered for a tie-breaker. In case of
further tie, marks of the Speaker 1 shall be taken into consideration.
f) Each side shall plead for time limit mentioned in the rules. Extension of 5 minutes
will be given to each speaker at the discretion of the Judge, after which a penalty of
0.25 marks will be levied per minute.
g) For rebuttal and sur-rebuttal, only one speaker shall be allowed to present. The
time reserved for rebuttal and sur rebuttal cannot be divided between the speakers.
Rebuttal time shall not be reserved beyond 5 minutes.
h) The participants shall ensure good internet connection. In case of poor
connection, the waiting time shall be only 5 minutes. If a member doesn’t join within
the given time limit, the other speaker or the researcher will be allowed to continue
with the remaining arguments. The waiting time will not be added to the speaker’s
time.
i) The organizing committee shall not be responsible for any technical issues that
arise from the side of the participants. The same is also to be followed in case the
participant does not report on stipulated time with any reason whatsoever.
j) Scouting is strictly prohibited. Any team indulging in the same shall be
disqualified from the competition, effective immediately.
k) Strict adherence to court manners shall be observed by all the participants

a. preliminary round
NOTE: No teams shall face the same team more than once.
b. quater final round
a) Quarter-final round shall be conducted on 2nd October 2021.
b) Each team shall be given 25 minutes to argue and 5 mins for rebuttal and sur-
rebuttal.
c) Each speaker should mandatorily argue for a minimum of 7 minutes. No speaker
will be allowed to argue for more than 12 minutes.
d) This round will be knock -out round and winner from each courtrooms shall qualify
for the semifinal round.
d. final round
a) Final round shall be conducted on 3rd October 2021.
b) Each team will be allotted 30 minutes for speaking and 5 minutes for rebuttal and
sur rebuttal
c) Each speaker will have to argue for a minimum of 11 minutes. No speaker will be
allowed to argue for more than 15 minutes.
9. registration
a) Teams are supposed to complete their Registration before 20th August 2021.
b) The Registration shall be done by filling up the Application form available at

c) The number of participating teams is limited to 100; the registrations will be done
on first come first serve basis. Registration will be closed once 100 teams register.
d) The Registration fee is Rs. 2000/- per team.
e) The Registration shall be deemed complete only when the Registration fee has been
remitted successfully and the Application form is duly filled.
f) Once the registration is complete, each team will be provided with a team
code along with the confirmation mail.
g) The teams shall quote this Team Code in all further communications with
the OC.
h) Fee once paid is non-refundable at any cost.
