The table illustrates the information on traveler statistics between 1996, 1998, and
2000 for various World Heritage areas in Australia. Overall, the number of tourists to
the Great Barrier Reef, the Blue Mountains, and the Tasmina Wilderness increased.
However, the figure for Central Eastern Rainforest Reserve, Shark Bay, and
Macquarie Island witnessed a downward trend.

In 1996, starting at approximately 450,000 to 530,000 visitors at the Tamina


Wilderness and the Blue Mountains. After four years, these two destinations slightly
rose by nearly 480,000 to 582,000 travelers. The Great Barrier Reef went up from
1,670,000 to 3,200,000 tourists between 1996 and 2000. Moreover, the Great Barrier
Reef was given the highest amount of tourists in 2000.

In 1996, while standing at 810,000 travelers, Central Eastern Rainforest Reserve


moderately fell to 790,000 in 1998 and 770,000 in 2000. Shark Bay recorded 84,000
visitors in 1996, compared to a slight growth up to 102,000 passengers in 1998. After
two years, this figure dropped to 89,000 visitors. Macquarie Island began at 350
tourists in 1996, compared with gradually declined to 310 in 1998, also the lowest
figure of visitors. In 2000, Macquarie Island rose to 330 travelers.
