1. Describe the structure of the red blood cell and how it is adapted to its function as an
oxygen transporter
 Does not contain a nucleus so it can maximise surface area for diffusion oxygen
 One cell thick so that it can go through capillaries and carry oxygen all through the body
 Biconcave shape allows oxygen exchange over a large surface area
 They contain haemoglobin which binds to oxygen
1. Describe the acute immune response and then outline the steps of the adaptive immune
response which comes into play if that fails
The acute immune response is when the body detects there is a pathogen inside the body due to
cells coming into contact with an unknown bacteria. Phagocytes are released to go to the site where
the pathogen has been found. The phagocytes then engulf the pathogen and release enzymes to
break it down. If this fails, the adaptive immune response produces lymphocytes that go to the site
where the pathogen is. The lymphocytes each have a specific antibody

2. Draw and label a typical lymphocyte explaining how its features are adapted to its function

3. Make a glossary of key terms for immunity : phagocytosis, antibody, antigen, proteolysis,
memory cell
4. Learn the EM spectrum (diagram will help!)
5. Describe two uses of electromagnetic radiation in medical diagnostic contexts, explaining
how the device is suited to produce an image of the body
