Quarter: _1_ Week No: _5_ SSLM No. _5_ MELC(s): Distinguish mixtures from
substances based on a set of properties (S7MT-Ie-f-4)
Objectives: 1. Distinguish a heterogeneous mixture.
2. Determine the properties of a heterogeneous mixture.
3. Prepare a heterogeneous mixture using materials available at
home.
Title of Textbook/LM to Study: Science 7 Learner’s Module
Chapter: 1 Page: 2 Topic: Solutions
Let Us Discover
In the previous lesson, you have learned about homogeneous mixtures. You
have found out that when all parts of the mixture have the uniform appearance and
properties, it is classified as homogeneous.
In this Simplified Self-Learning Module, you will learn about the other
classification of mixture which is heterogeneous mixture.
When different parts of the mixture can be identified, it is heterogeneous. A
heterogeneous mixture is not uniform and all its different components can be seen or
distinguished from each other. It does not have a definite composition and not all
parts will look the same as it may not be evenly distributed to all its parts. Another
property of a heterogeneous mixture is that the different substances that make it up,
retain its own properties.
Think for example of an ice cube (solid phase) placed in a glass of soft drink
(liquid phase). The ice still retains its properties, the same as the soft drink.
ice
soft drink
Cheese
bacon
crust
oil
water
Let Us Try
A. Read the following statements about heterogeneous mixture. Write TRUE if the
statement is correct and FALSE if it is incorrect.
B. Study the given pictures below. Identify the heterogeneous mixture and check (√)
the box
1. 2.
3. 4.

Guide Question:
1. What are the properties of a heterogeneous mixture?
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
The next activity will help you better understand what heterogeneous mixture
is. Perform this simple experiment at home and answer the following questions.
I. Objective:
The learners should be able to identify the constituents of a mixture.
II. Materials:
1 glass of Sprite or 7-Up
clear glass or plastic cup
raisins
Conclusion:
The statement “Soda is a mixture of liquid and gas (hypothesis) is TRUE / FALSE
(underline one).
The fizz in the soft drinks is because of ________________________________.
This will cause the objects that are lighter than the liquid to ____________________.
