Electrostatic precipitator (ESP) is a filtration device that removes fine particles, like dust
and smoke, from a flowing gas using the force of an induced electrostatic charge minimally
impeding the flow of gases through the unit. ESP applies energy only to the particulate
matter being collected and therefore is very efficient in its consumption of energy (in the
form of electricity).
The most basic precipitator contains a row of thin vertical wires, and followed by a stack of
large flat metal plates oriented vertically, with the plates typically spaced about 1 cm to 18
cm apart, depending on the application. The air stream flows horizontally through the
spaces between the wires, and then passes through the stack of plates. A negative voltage
of several thousand volts is applied between wire and plate. If the applied voltage is high
enough, an electric corona discharge ionizes the air around the electrodes, which then
ionizes the particles in the air stream. The ionized particles, due to the electrostatic force,
are diverted towards the grounded plates. Particles build up on the collection plates and are
removed from the air stream

Electrical portion

The ESP power supply and controls are traditionally based on one pair of antiparallel
thyristors which alter the amplitude of the primary AC voltage. The primary supply is
usually single phase, 400 V 50 Hz. By changing the firing angle, the voltage is being
changed in the range from 0 to 400 V and brought to the primary of the line frequency
power transformer whose secondary voltage reaches 45 kV to 90 kV (see fig. 1). The high
voltage rectifier made out of the great number of series connected diodes is placed in the
oil-filled container, along with the transformer itself. The transformer and the diode
rectifier are denoted as T/R, Transformer – Rectifier set. This power source is equipped
with perfect interlocking protective system. This device can be furnished with computer
management system and host computer according to the need of operator.

Figure 1.

This power source can automatically adjust the voltage applied to the electric field
according to the changes of gas conditions therein and can adjust the spark ratio in the field
to the optimum level that the highest results of dust collection can be achieved. This power
source is equipped with perfect interlocking protective system. This device can be
furnished with computer management system and host computer according to the need of
customer.

Action plan:

 Perform Physical inspection Routine to checks the panels if there are phenomena of
air leakage, condensation, corrosion or dust accumulation.
 If shut down check rapping system equipment (hammer, bearing two-wheel, four-
wheel, shaft sleeve etc) distance between collecting electrode (CE) and discharge
electrode. If CE and DE can cause T/R more spark or trip
 Routine checks and maintenance the motors.
 With reference to the manufacturer’s manual, check the T/R sets to see if the
functions of the HV isolating switches, relays, heaters, instruments for temperature
measuring and controlling, alarms, earthing devices, etc. are normal
