PREFACE TO THE ENGLISH EDITION
THE first edition of this book appeared in 19 II, and the
second in 1930. The occasion of the present translation
was a suggestion made by Dr. R. H. Thouless of Glasgow .
. It was his opinion that the English reading public contains
many who are interested in problems of colour, and that
such a translation would serve to acquaint these more
fully than has hitherto been possible with the type of
problem treated in my book. I am grateful to Dr.
Thouless not only for the suggestion but also for the
keen interest with which he has followed the work of
translation to its completion.
The publishers found it necessary to stipulate that
the book be considerably abridged in translation. This
caused me some misgivings at first, but I finally decided
to undertake the task. During the preparation of the
book for translation it became clear that many of the
methods used in the original investigation have since
then found general acceptance, and for this reason would
no longer need to be presented in detail. On the same
basis it proved feasible to omit many more or less intricate
arguments for theses which are now considered as fairly
well established and to reduce the number of references
to the earlier literature.
I am particularly grateful to my good friend Dr. R. B.
MacLeod for undertaking the tedious and time-consuming
task of translation. Dr. MacLeod is one of those who
understand the problems of colour-constancy best, and
has himself made a significant experimental contribution.

I should like, too, to express my warmest thanks to
all those who during this period of great stress have
made it possible for me to stay in Manchester, and
in that way have assisted in the preparation of this
translation.
FROM THE PREFACE TO THE SECOND
GERMAN EDITION
SINCE the appearance of the first edition of this book
nineteen years have passed. If. during this long period
it has not become as out of date as one might have
expected from a book of predominantly empirical charac-
ter, I consider it as having been due not to me, but rather
to the fundamental method which I employed; and
no one could wish for a finer confirmation of the validity
of a method. This method is that of the unbiased
description of phenomena, to which the term" phenom-
enological method" is commonly applied.
Here and there the opinion has been expressed that
in the first edition the construction of theory did not
keep step with the presentation of factual material. I
am inclined to think, however, that such critics have
somewhat underestimated the amount of theory that
reallyis contained in the first edition. It must be granted,
I feel, that in a period when the whole of psychology
was still immersed in the gloom of atomistic dogma, to
have set up a totality theory of the perception of illu-
mination and of the underlying physiological processes
is a theoretic achievement of some worth. It is not to
be regarded as a mere accident that Koffka himself, one
of the founders of the Gestalt theory, wrote in a review
of the first edition: "The significance of Katz's experi-
ments . . . will reveal itself in the effects which the
work is bound to exercise on the whole field of psycho-
logical research." Even if the first edition was not
altogether untheoretical, I confess that I was in general
somewhat diffident about theorizing; and with good
grounds. The wealth of discovered fact was so great,

and its structure so many sided, that it was not easy to
arrive at a single set of theoretical principles which would
be valid for the whole. One cannot overlook the fact
that all the attempts that have as yet been made to find
a theoretical basis for the questions treated here suffer
more or less from the drawback that they take only parts of
the field into account, and fail to comprehend the whole.
. All the new facts and theories which seemed to me to
be valuable have been incorporated, and have received
ready recognition. Whoever desires in future to do
work on the problem of colour-constancy will not need
to go through the whole literature again, for I hope
that nothing of significance has escaped my notice.
In view of the progress which has been made in the
study of these problems, it seemed possible for me to
make some more positive contributions to the theory.
~he direction I have taken corresponds in part with
that indicated by the researches of other investigators.
It corresponds, too, however, with the direction which
my own thinking has been taking quite independently,
and which expresses a developmental tendency evident
in some of my more recently published works, particularly
in my comprehensive work on the world of touch. The
relationship between that work and this is evident even
in the change of name which this book has undergone
in the present edition.1 Stated simply, my own develop-
ment has been in the direction of according less and less
significance to the influence of experience. Actually the
first edition contains more evidence against the significance
of individual experience than for it.

The following German terms have been used in a more or
less technical sense in the original. In some cases the English
equivalents are by no means satisfactory, but were accepted simply
because they have become current.
Ausgepriigtheit = pronoullcedness.
Be!euchtung = illumination (as a phenomenal datum, or as a physical
process).
Beriicksichtigung der Be!euchtung = the taking into account of the illu-
mination. (" Discounting the illumination" and" abstraction of the
illumination" have been used by some writers.)
eigentliche Farbe = genuine colour.
Eindringlichkeit =insistence.
Erleuchtung= lighting (as a phenomenal datum, usually used with reference
to the phenomenal lighting of space).
Erscheinungsweise =mode of appearance.
Farbmaterie, Farbwert = colour-matter (as distinguished from mode of
appearance).

Glanz = lustre.
