Game Options

Purpose: The game component is meant to be a quick way for students to

practice and get up and moving. If done whole class, ideally it will take no more
than 10-15 minutes depending on the activity chosen. However, you may choose to
extend some games and use them as station practice as well.

Memory (Partner or Whole Group): Print two sets of cards. Students work in
groups of 2-3. Place cards face down and students search for matches. To
make this game go more quickly, you may want to print each set of words on two
different colors of paper. Students then search for a match by picking one
color card from each set that is face down.

Quiz, Quiz, Trade (Whole Group): Students each get a card. Have them walk
around to music. When they music stops, they find a partner nearby. Students
read their word to their partner. Partner spells the word. If they get it correct
they trade cards and start walking again. Play as long as time permits.

Roll a Word (Partner): Use the roll a word game card. Students place words
face down. One partner rolls the dice and will spell the word that the partner
draws from the stack using the voice they roll.

Inside/Outside Circle (Whole Group): Put students in an inside outside circle.

Have them take turns asking their partner to spell the word. Then rotate the
outside circle by one or two people. Students repeat the process.

Speed Spelling (Whole Group) : This works like inside/outside only, instead of
going in a circle, students make two lines. Students can either spell the words
out loud, or you can give them a white board and marker. Each partner shares
their word and both write their word on their whiteboard and share. Once both
partners are done and have corrected the word if incorrect, they erase and one
side of the line will move over a partner and continue the process. It is important
that each student have a different word to make this effective.

Board Games (stations): Place the cards in a station and then students must
spell a word for their partner to take their turn on their game. Great games
for this include things like Connect4, Jenga, and Checkers.

Sticky Hands (Small Group): Lay cards facedown on the table students take

turns using a sticky hand to slap a laminated card and grab it. They read the
word and their partner spells the word to them.
