LABORATORY ACTIVITY NO. 8

Discharge of a Weir

Learning Outcome:
At the end of the activity, the students should be able to:
1. Understand the properties of flow in weirs.
2. Familiarize the procedure in determining the discharge of a weir.
3. Apply the concept of weirs in solving engineering problems.

I. Discussion of Theory:
A weir is an opening in the side walls of a tank. It is same as an orifice without having an outer
boundary. If the head is reduced the liquid flows with its level below the top of the orifice. The wall
above the liquid level is superfluous and can be removal. The difference between a large orifice and
weir is that liquid flows through the orifice while it flows over the weir. The flow of liquid coming out
of orifice is called jet while that comes through the weir is called ‘nape, sheet or vein’.

There is no difference between a notch and a weir, except that notch is a small structure and has a
sharp edges. Weir, on the other hand, is generally is an over flow structure. With broad crested, built
across an open channel. It is built across a river in order to raise water on the upstream and to allow
excess water to flow over its entire length to the downstream side. Weirs are used for measuring the
rate of flow of water in rivers or stream. The relation between H and h for maximum discharge is, h
= 23H

Theoretical discharge, Qt = CLH3/2 in m3/sec

Where:
L = Length of the weir measured parallel to width of channel in meters
H = Constant head over the crest on the upstream of channel in meters.

II. Apparatus:
Hydraulic Flume
Weir
Stopwatch

III. Procedure:
Watch the Youtube video for the procedure in this experiment:

IV. Questions
1. Define weir.
2. Identify the types of weirs as used in actual practice.
3. Illustrate the step-by-step procedure of this experiment.
V. Problem Solving

1. A rectangular, sharp-crested weir 15 m long with end contractions suppressed is 1.60

m high. Determine the discharge when the head is 300 mm.

2. What length of Cipolletti weir should be constructed so that the head will be 47 cm
when the discharge is 3454 Liters / sec?

3. A weir in a horizontal channel is 3.65 meters wide and 1.22 meters high. The
upstream water depth is 1.58 meters. Estimate the discharge if the weir is sharp-crested.

4. What is the flow rate of water over a 60° triangular weir when the head is 27.43 cm?
IV.) QUESTIONS:
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY PLEDGE

I swear on my honor that I did not use any appropriate aid, nor give such to others, in getting my assigned
questionnaire for this course activity. I fully understand that cheating and/or plagiarism is a major offense, as
stated in Section 15 of the TIP Student Manual and TIP Memorandum No. P-04, s. 2017-2018. I will
wholeheartedly accept the consequences and sanctions that will be imposed on me appropriately once I have
committed such acts.
