CONTENT
PART 1: THEORETICAL BASIS.

1.1. The concept of English writing skill

“ English writing skills include all the knowledge and abilities related to
expressing ideas through the written word ”. The ability to clearly communicate
ideas through writing is really helpful for everyone in any situation. For
example: when you write a message, plans, or strategies for a product of your
company, or you write a report, or essay, even you write an email to your boss or
your customers. You have to use your writing skill to convey your ideas clearly
and make everyone easy to understand.

There are many styles of English writing, but each style requires a unique skill
and serves a specific purpose. For example, English business writing for
business purposes, English advertisement writing for advertising purposes, and
English essay writing for research and study in English...etc. No matter what
type of writing style or specific purpose it serves, English writing skill are very
important.

English writing skill are important because they allow people to get a point
across without being physically present. For example, you can get your first
impression from future employers through the writing skills you display in your
resume, cover letter, and email communications especially when you are a
student. This skill is really helpful and brings many opportunities to you at the
university and also in the workplace.

6
1.2. Characteristics of third-year non-English major students at Hanoi
University of Culture.

1.2.1. Attitude towards learning to write English.

From surveying 100 students, I obtained the following survey results about
students' attitudes towards learning to write English: 48% (48 students) find that
the importance of learning to write English and want to improve this skill, 30%
(30 students) feel confused because this skill is quite difficult, 18% (18 students)
feel scared because their English skills are still low, 4% (4 students) think all of
the above answers.

Figure 1: Survey on attitudes of third-year non-English majors at Culture University

toward learning to write English

7
From the results of a survey we can see that the 3rd year students who are not
majoring in English at Hanoi University of Culture have a very focused attitude
towards English writing skills because they realize the importance of this skill
such: Firstly, they are able to convey ideas fully; Second, they can express
themself in a better way; Thirdly they can get good marks in exams and finally
they can increase their chances of getting a job. Because of the above important
reasons, they really want to be able to improve their English writing skills better.
They are also very eager to find a suitable solution for themself to improve this
skill.

However, there is also a small part of students who have an attitude like panic
because they find this skill too difficult, or they feel scared because their English
is still weak, leading to a lack of confidence when encountering exercises
required to write in English. They are afraid of further study to improve this
skill. If they do not overcome this obstacle, they may lose a lot of opportunities
in the future. For this group of students, we should find special solutions for
them to help them overcome their own obstacles.

1.2.2. Psychology when encountering written exams in English

1.2.2.1. Lack of confidence when writing English

The 3rd-year students who are not majoring in English often feel less confident
when writing English for a number of reasons: Firstly, they lack knowledge,
because there are many written exams that require them to have knowledge
about that problem from there they are able to write. Therefore many students
feel very confused when they encounter topics that they lack knowledge about.
They may not regularly read newspapers or books in English. Second, they do
not know how to clearly outline their essay, so even if they have a good idea to
write an essay, they still can not convey those ideas clearly in their writing,
leading to the sentences in the article being very messy. Therefore, they need

8
someone to guide them on how to build an outline in the clearest and most
detailed way to help them have the skills to make an outline before writing, to
help their article become coherent and unified.

1.2.2.2. Thinking in Vietnamese when writing in English

One of the fastest solutions when you need to write in English but do not know
how to do it, the fastest way is to come up with an idea in Vietnamese and then
translate it into English. This way, most of the 3rd year students who do not
study English language use it in emergencies. It must be said that this way is
very fast and helps you to pass the tests or exams in class. But if we continue to
rely on this way, in the long run it will destroy students' thinking in English
when writing English. It forms for you the habit of lazy thinking, and you have
to rely on thinking in Vietnamese and then using google translate into English.
And without google translate to English it is not possible to complete articles in
English.

9
PART 2: THE REALITY OF ENGLISH WRITING SKILL OF THIRD-
YEAR NON-ENGLISH MAJORS AT HANOI UNIVERSITY OF
CULTURE.

2.1. Survey on the reality of English writing skill of 3rd year non-English
major students at Hanoi University of Culture.

Through a questionnaire survey with 100 third-year students, non - English

major students at Hanoi University of Culture, I have obtained the following
results about the current status of students' English writing skills: 15 % (15
students) rate their English writing skills as good, 27% (27 students) rate their
English writing skills as above average, 37% (37 students) rated their own
English writing skills at an average level, 12% (12 students) rated their own
English writing skills as below average level and 9% (9 students) rated their own
English writing skills as bad level.

Figure 2: Survey on the reality of English writing skills of third-year non-English

majors students at Hanoi University of Culture.

10
From there, we can see the current situation of English writing skills of third-
year non-English majors students, at Hanoi University of Culture, Most of the
students' English writing skills are at medium level. Therefore, it is not too
difficult to come up with solutions to improve English writing skills, because
those solutions, no matter what the student's level, can be applied and regularly
work on improving their own English writing skills.

2.2. Causes of the reality of English writing skill of 3rd year non-English
major students.

2.2.1. Subjective causes

From the survey of 100 students, I obtained the following results: 15% (15
students) think that the subjective reason why they can not improve their English
writing skills is that they do not study methodically, 18% (18 students) think
that the subjective reason why they can not improve their English writing skills
is lack of knowledge, and 10% (10 students) think that the subjective reason that
makes they can not improve English writing skills is due to lack of vocabulary,
14% (14 students) think that the subjective reason why they can not improve
their English skills is due to poor grammar, 6% ( 6 students) think that the
subjective reason why they can not improve their English skills is that they don
not pay much attention to English writing skills, 18% (18 students) think that
the subjective reason is always thinking in Vietnamese before writing in English,
7% (7 students) think that the subjective cause is not writing often, 7% (7
students) think that the subjective cause is lack of perseverance when practicing
English writing skills. 5% (5 students) think that the subjective reason is all the
above answers.

11
Figure 3: Survey on subjective causes leading to the reality of English writing skills
of third-year non-English majors at Hanoi University of Culture.

From there, it shows that the subjective reasons for students' English writing
skills are mainly: Firstly, always thinking in Vietnamese before writing in
English. Secondly, lack of knowledge.Thirdly, not studying methodically. Fourth
is poor grammar. And finally, the lack of vocabulary.

12
2.2.2. Objective causes

From the survey results of 100 students, I have obtained the following results
about the objective reasons leading to the current state of students' English
writing skills: 26% (26 students) think that the school does not have a subject to
teach English writing skills to non-English majors students, 29% (29 students)
think that the objective reason is that there is no advisor specializing in editing
English writing for students, 17% (17 students) think that the objective cause is
the lack of resources related to learning to write English skills, 16% (16 students)
think that the objective reason is the lack of a forum to students can discuss and
share their experiences of learning English writing skills, 12% (12 students)
believe that the objective reasons are all the answers above.

Figure 4: Survey on objective causes leading to the current situation of English

writing skills among third-year non-English majors at Hanoi University of Culture.

13
From there, we can see the objective reasons for the current status of students'
English writing skills, such as: Firstly, there is no advisor specializing in editing
English writing for students. Second, the school does not have a subject that
teaches English writing skills to non-English majors students. Third, there is a
lack of resources related to learning English writing skills. And finally, there is a
lack of forums for students to discuss and share their experiences in learning
English writing skills.

14
PART 3: SOLUTIONS TO IMPROVE THE REALITY OF ENGLISH
WRITING SKILL OF THIRD-YEAR NON-ENGLISH MAJORS AT
HANOI UNIVERSITY OF CULTURE.

3.1. Solutions from university

3.1.1. Open more classes to teach English writing skills from basic to
advanced.

Hanoi University of Culture opens a lot of English classes every new semester,
but in general, the school's English classes often learn skills in a very general
way and do not go into depth about each skill. Especially English writing skills.
Therefore, schools should focus on teaching English writing skills to students
more, because this skill is very important not only in work but also in
communicating with people in the distant working space. The school should
assign teachers of the language department to develop a specific roadmap for
learning English writing skills suitable for students of the school from basic to
advanced, to equip them with important skills. It will open up a lot of these good
opportunities for students and is a stepping stone for students to be confident
after graduation. The school also needs to add more resources related to learning
English writing skills so that students can have a reputable and quality reference
source and it will be more convenient for teachers to teach English writing skill.

3.1.2. Need a consultant to edit essays for students.

In addition to opening more English writing classes from basic to advanced, the
school also needs to arrange more lecturers from the language department who
can become essay editing advisors for students whenever there is a writing
assignment essay in English, when students need advice. The fact that the
mentors correct students' work from small essays to large essays will help
students catch basic mistakes to big mistakes, from which students form the
habit of careful writing in every word as they write it down.
15
This solution will be very difficult at first because the number of language
teachers in the school is limited and the teachers also have teaching jobs in the
classroom, so the number of students who can correct their lessons is also very
limited. Therefore, when being corrected by teachers, students should study hard
and practice regularly, trying to improve your mistakes so that you can share
your learned skills with English fellow writers is worse than you.

3.2. Solutions from individuals.

3.2.1.1. Prepare knowledge.

Before writing, you need to try to gather knowledge, review old lessons, and find
all the references related to the topic you want to write about. The best way is
that you should make an outline for the article, add all the content you want to
convey in the article into that outline, and then adjust the ideas to suit the topic
of the article and start your writing. Some areas of writing are highly specialized
and require extensive knowledge in a single area, like scientific or legal writing.
Research information and knowledge about the topic you want to write about is
must-do work, it will prove your writing has high-quality content and contain
value.

3.2.1.2. Freelance writing.

Freelance writing is a solution to help you free yourself. Instead of deleting or

correcting a sentence or two in the article, you can write freely. Write down a
series of thoughts and ideas in your head, not necessarily with correct grammar,
or vocabulary, and even can be mixed in both English and Vietnamese as long as
you put all your thoughts and ideas into the article. When you write freely like
that, you do not feel pressured to get it right the first time because you can go
back and edit it.

16
3.2.1.3. Use grammarly

Grammarly is a virtual writing assistant technology that is a very good tool that
even native speakers use to correct their writing. You can install grammarly on
your browser extension and create a free account so that Grammarly can check
your mistakes in the process of writing emails, writing messages or writing
online posts. Grammarly has a completely free version that helps you pick up
each mistake such as typographical errors, grammar errors, sentence errors,
punctuation, and commas very well. If you upgrade to the premieum version,
there will be more outstanding features. One of the best features of the premieum
is that it helps you choose valuable vocabulary for the specific situation in which
you are writing. In addition, the premieum also has a function to help you rewrite
sentences more clearly, omitting unnecessary words to make your sentences
clearer and more concise. Therefore, depending on the needs of each user to be
able to give themselves a version that is suitable for their own use needs.

3.2.1.4. Learn from your mistakes.

Learning from your mistakes is a very effective method of learning and it

produces admirable results. Learning from mistakes will help you progress faster
when you realize the points you need to fix and when you overcome those
shortcomings, you will raise yourself to a new level. Therefore, when you are
fortunate enough to meet someone with good English writing skills who point
out mistakes in your writing, you should actively mark and pay special attention
to those mistakes, every time you write an article. Re-read the edit many times to
understand why it is necessary to correct that mistake, write down all those
mistakes in a notebook so that when you write a new article you will open it to
see where you went wrong in the previous post. In this new post, you will learn
from your experience so that you will not make that mistake. Regularly repeating
this method, your English writing skills will improve a lot.

17
3.2.1.5. Practice

To be good at any skill or field, it is indispensable to work hard. For example: To

become a good athlete, they must plan to practice and train regularly for a long
time to reach the standard they have set. Therefore, just like you want to become
a person with good English writing skills, you also need to make a plan for
yourself to practice writing English skills in a specific and regular way. Every
day spend a little time on writing English, write whatever topic you want, write
down all the ideas in your mind so that your ideas are released out, practice
regularly in that way, it will create a habit for you and when you start writing
about a certain topic or essay, you will easily understand the content of the
article you want to write without taking too much time, because your skills are
honed every day and one day you will realize you have improved a lot through
regular practice. Always remember that “Practice makes perfect”.

3.2.2. Practice thinking in English when writing in English

3.2.2.1. Read documents, research problems to be written in English

To be able to write English in the same way as native speakers, that is, when you
write, people can feel that this is the person they think in English, not someone
they think in Vietnamese and then they translate it into English to write. So how
can that level be achieved? To achieve that level is through reading a lot of
English books and documents. Try to read in English and do not look it up in a
dictionary or restrict yourself to it, look up only the most important words and
try to guess the meaning of the words. You should also try to guess why people
write with such sentence structure and you internalize people's structures, learn
how people think, and learn how people translate their thoughts into words in an
article or a book.

18
3.2.2.2. Build ideas in English before writing in English.

To build ideas in English when you write in English, you have to think in
English. You have to do anything in English whenever possible. Reading
documents and books in English. Research all the things related to your topic
writing in English. You should stop translating between English and your native
language.

Before writing you have to make an outline in English, you start brainstorming a
list of everything you might want to write in your essay in English. Then you
look at the list and cross out what might be unnecessary, irrelevant, or not
appropriate. Then arrange them in a logical order.

At first, doing this activity will be very difficult, but if you persevere in applying
and practicing this method, your ideation in English will improve a lot. And it
will bring you a lot of benefits from thinking and building ideas in English.

19
