Chapter 1

Introduction to the study

Background of the study

These days, modular approach is an emerging trend in educational thinking

that shifts traditional method of learning to an outcome-based learning program. In

the middle of pandemic where students are vulnerable and everyone is a potential

carrier of a deadly virus, modes of education were brought by local government and

implemented upon learners depending on each of the student’s preferences and

availability of their resources. The approach has drawn a special attention in most

nation’s educational system particularly in technical and vocational and higher

education. This is a trend toward modular approach to curriculum implementation

these days. The principle of modularization is to divide the curriculum into small

discrete modules or units that are independent, nonsequential, and typically short in

duration.

According to Basic Education Learning Plan (BE -CCP) Under DepEd Order

No. 012, S. 2020.

Acquiring deep knowledge about the significant effects of modular learning

towards senior high school students facilitates better strategies and ideas regarding

on how education system should improve their ways on delivering available, cost

free, and effective mode of learning while students stay on their own home.

Teaching approach gives significant to the teaching-learning process for

both teachers and students. Thus, the students’ learning depends on what the

school’s application of most effective and attainable teaching approach especially in

the time of Covid-19 pandemic. With the implementation of the new normal

education, the difficulties encountered among stakeholders because of an alternative

learning delivery-modular distance learning being applied in order to facilitate and to

continue to serve the good education in different schools in the country Philippines.

With this, the study sought to determine the perceptions of the students in Vito

National High School regarding their experiences during face-to-face learning

approach and modular distance learning approach, to ascertain the factors that can

affect face-to-face learning and

modular learning as perceived by the students of Vito National High School. This also

aimed to find out the significant difference of students’ academic performance in the

two-learning approach.

Modularization is based on the principle of dividing the curriculum into small discrete

modules or units that are independent, nonsequential, and typically short in

duration. Students accumulates credits for modules which can lead to the

qualification for which a specified number of credit point is required. According to

Hornby, as cited in Joseph and Mekuwanint (2015) and Malik (2012), module is a

unit of work in a course of instruction that is virtually self-contained and a method of

teaching that is based on the building up of skills and knowledge in discrete units.

Therefore, a module is a measured part of an extended learning experience leading

to a specified qualification(s) “for which a designated number, and normally

sequence, of units or modules is required.”

Statement of the problem

The problem underlying this study is that most of the senior high school

students are struggling to understand the different topics in the module. They will

only answer some questions and if they don’t understand it they will leave it. There

is also a challenge in dealing with learners under any of the modes of distance

learning and blended learning who are not capable of learning independently.

Review of literature

The following review of literature summarizes source of the existing research

concerning the face-to-face and modular learning. The following will be briefly

reviewed in this chapter: (a) Definition of Traditional learning; (b) Definition of

Modular Learning; (c) Advantages of Traditional learning; (d) Advantages of Modular

Learning; (e) Disadvantages o Traditional Learning; (f) Disadvantages of Modular

Learning.

Definition of Traditional Learning

Traditional or Face-to-face learning is an educational method in which a

group of students is taught course content and learning material in person. This

allows a learner and an instructor to engage in real time. It is the most common

method of educational instruction. Additionally, learners gain from increased

interaction with their classmates. Students are held accountable for their progress in

face-to-face learning ensures a greater grasp and retention of lesson content, as

well as the opportunity for class participants to bond. Face-to-face learning is

primarily a teacher-centered mode of education that varies greatly among cultures.

Many modern educational systems have transitioned away from conventional face-

to-face types of educational instruction in favor of meeting the requirements of

individual pupils. Learning methodologies have been studied extensively for more

than five decades. While traditional learning model was previously dominant method

7
Republic of the Philippines

Brgy. Vito, Sagay City, Negros Occidental

in the field of learning, the early 1970s saw a wide range of reforms in educational

fields supported by new technologies that facilitate the change from a teacher to a

student-centered model. However, these forms are still limited regarding efficiency.

This study constitutes a systematic and critical review of the two dominant learning

models, traditional learning and inquiry-based learning. While, traditional learning is

supposed to increase learner’s outcomes and keeps them active during the learning

process, it has been widely asserted that inquiry-based learning increases learner’s

knowledge and skills. This review is based on forty-three empirical studies reported

in the literature between 2002 and 2017.

Definition of Modular Learning

This pandemic paved the way for the introduction of different forms of

education, such as modular distance learning, as an emergency response to ensure

continuity of education. According to Mark Anthony Lego (2020), modular distance

learning is about learners learning at their own pace and their own way using the

Self-learning module (SLM). This can be in print, digital format or electronic copy

suitable for learner or other resources such as student’s materials, textbooks, activity

sheets, study guides and other materials.

According to the Department of Education (DepEd) parents or guardians

perform the various role in Modular learning such as educator and innovator. As an

8
Republic of the Philippines
VITO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Brgy. Vito, Sagay City, Negros Occidental

educator, they are the ones to get and submit the printed Self Learning Modules

(SLMs) from and to schools or barangay halls at the beginning and end of the week,

depending on the agreement between the parents and the school. There are lots of

subjects and activities to be done, they need to see that it is being followed

accordingly to avoid cramming which may affect the learner’s performance

According to Moon (1988) describes that modular studies syllabus seeks to

facilitate an approach to learning which is experiential, practical and related to life in

the community and wider world. According to Meyer (1988) the difference can be

shown more systematically by identifying key conditions for effective learning and

comparing how these conditions are met or not met by conventional teaching and by

modular approach has proven to be an efficient tool to help students learn. Most

subjects can be taught with this approach.

Modular Distance Learning encourages learners to study independently. The

benefits of modules for instruction is the acquisition of better self-study or learning

skills among students. Learners may develop a sense of responsibility and dedication

in accomplishing the task provided in the module. According to (Nardo, M.T.B, 2017)

states that with or without assistance from others, the learners progress on their

own. They are learning how to learn; they are empowered.

Modularization is based on the principle of dividing the curriculum into small

discrete modules or units that are independent, nonsequential, and typically short in

duration. Students accumulates credits for modules which can lead to the

qualification for which a specified number of credit point is required. According to

Hornby, as cited in Joseph and Mekuwanint (2015) and Malik (2012), module is a

9
Republic of the Philippines
VITO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Brgy. Vito, Sagay City, Negros Occidental

unit of work in a course of instruction that is virtually self-contained and a method of

teaching that is based on the building up of skills and knowledge in discrete units.

Therefore, a module is a measured part of an extended learning experience leading

to a specified qualification(s) “for which a designated number, and normally

sequence, of units or modules is required.”

Advantages of Traditional learning

Traditionally, classroom instruction is known to be teacher-centered and

requires passive learning by the student. In teacher-centered, or passive learning,

the instructor usually controls classroom dynamics. The teacher lectures and

comments, while students listen, take notes, and ask questions. Students are

evaluated exclusively by teachers, who represent their main source of information,

and the quality of learning is strongly dependent on them. It increases interaction

among students and provides conducive environment to learn fellow students. It

also encourages higher level of competitiveness among students. The social

environment at a traditional school is perfect to build a child’s character and

personality. Teachers play a pivotal role in instilling discipline and providing a sense

of direction to students in a traditional learning environment.

Advantages of Modular Learning

10
Republic of the Philippines
VITO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Brgy. Vito, Sagay City, Negros Occidental

According to Nishatha Abraham Bijeesh, you can learn at your own pace.

It’s a known fact that different people learn in different ways and at different speed.

You can study whenever and wherever. You can save money and time. The students

learn time management and scheduling. Many students nowadays find it fulfilling to

manage their time in doing the modules. Flexible, distance education allows such

students to find convenient time to study without interfering with their busy

schedule, one can study after work, in the middle of the night or during weekends.

You can pursue a job along with studies. You save time. In modular learning, your

classroom is right in your bedroom and the study material on your desk.

Parents realize their role as it very important in education. They help their

children understand the lesson and how to apply in daily life.

Disadvantages of Traditional Learning

There are still problems with traditional learning in school as they do not

offer an easy way to connect teachers or administration outside of school hours.

This means that problems go unsolved unless they are solved on the spot. Teachers

also have no one to help them handle problems beyond their expertise, making

11
Republic of the Philippines
VITO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Brgy. Vito, Sagay City, Negros Occidental

problems more difficult to solve. Students will also experience bullying problems,

drug problems, and problems with safety. These issues make it difficult for students

at schools to learn in a healthy environment. One of the most apparent

disadvantages of traditional school is that students are more concerned with

obtaining high scores than actual performance. Grades become nothing more than a

means in some cases.

Disadvantages of Modular Learning

The disadvantages of Modular Learning are the following; parents spoil their

children by answering all their modules. Not all students do their modules

wholeheartedly and they do it for formality purposes. Some students tend to copy

their answers from other students without reading their modules. And they learn

nothing. This mode of learning become a challenge for every student’s right now.

The great number of activities is one of the main problems of the students.

It includes greater self-discipline and self-motivation required for students,

increase preparation time and lack of concrete reward for teachers and staff, and

greater administrative resources needed to track students and operate multiple

modules.

Methodology

This chapter describes the research methods and design that was used to determine

the effects of modular learning in the academic performance of grade 12 GAS

enrollees.

Research Design

The research design was a descriptive design. It is a type of research

design that aims to obtain information to systematically describe a phenomenon,

situation, or population. More specifically, it helps answer the what, when, where,

and how questions regarding the research problem, rather than the why.

Sample

Purposive Sampling was used. A form of non-probability sampling in

which decisions concerning the individuals to be taken by the researcher, based

upon a variety of criteria which may include specialist knowledge of the research

issue, or capacity and willingness to participate in the research. Also known as

judgmental, selective, or subjective sampling in which researchers rely on their own

judgment when choosing members of the population to participate in their surveys.

Instrument

The primary source of data are the grades of senior high school students.

Data Collection Procedures

The sample 49 student grades were obtained from their class adviser. The

personal information of the students was protected.

Statistical tools

The following statistical tools are used in answering the problem.

1. To answer question number 1 about the profile of the participants, percentage

and frequency were used.

2. To answer question number 2 and 3 about the level of academic performance in

traditional and modular learning delivery, mean was used.

3. To answer question number 4 about the significant relationship of the academic

performance and modular learning, t-test was used.
