Gears Specification
Structural steelworks shall be designed and constructed in accordance with BS 5950 or other recognized
design code, except where inconsistent with terms of the Specification.
Structural steel hydraulic structures, such as gates, shall be designed to a suitable code such as the
Japanese Hydraulic Associations “Technical Standards for Gates and Penstocks” or DIN 19704 “Design of
Hydraulic Steel Structures”.
The Contractor shall submit to the Engineer with manufacturer's test certificates for steel used in the
permanent works.
Unless otherwise specified the maximum deflection of gate structural parts shall be restricted to 1/800 of
their span under all specified conditions of loading unless otherwise specified.
Where the Contractor is rehabilitating an existing structure designed to a code other than BS 5950, they
may, with the Engineer’s permission, in writing, use alternative, suitable materials to match the existing
Plant. This permission shall not remove the Contractor’s responsibility to provide sound and fully operable
Plant.
In no case shall the gate skin plate thickness be less than 10 mm, unless otherwise specified or shown on
the Drawings. A corrosion allowance of at least 2 mm shall be added to the thickness of the gate skin
