Dept. of Mech. Engg ME110 THERMODYNAMICS: 8. Tech I Semester IT, Madras QUIZ I, Aug-Nov 2016 Time: 8.00 to 8.50 am Max. Marks: 40 Date: 1.9.2016 1, A vertical frictionless piston cylinder arrangement is made up of a freely moving piston of mass M and thickness ¢ and a cylinder of height £ and cross-sectional area A. The cylinder is open at the top to atmosphere which is at a pressure Py and closed at the bottom. The space below the piston is occupied by a gas with an initial volume of VY, ‘The space above the piston is filled with sand of density p."Heat is now added to the gas causing the piston to move up slowly until all the sand has been spilled. Derive expressions for the following in terms of the given quantities: (2) initial pressure, final pressure of the gas and the pressure at any intermediate instant (b) work interaction for the gas. (€) Sketch the process undergone by the gas on a PV-diagram and show through appropriate hatching the areas corresponding to the work interactions for the atmosphere, sand and the piston. [14 marks] 2. Two kg of ice at 0°C is dropped into 5 kg of liquid water initially at 20°C in a large closed container. Simultaneously, 3500 k) of heat is slowly added to the container. Assuming that the pressure remains constant and there are no heat losses from the container to the surroundings, determine (a) the final temperature and (b) the mass of vapor formed. The latent heat of melting of ice may be taken to be 334 kJ/kg, latent heat of vaporization of water to be 2260 Ki/kg and specific heat of water to be 4.2 KJ/kg.K. The boiling point of water may be taken as 100°C. [10 marks] 3. Consider the frictionie> piston cylinde: arrangement shown in which the piston is ‘ree to move. The cylinder is open at the top to the atmosphere and closed at the bottom and is divided into two compartments A and B by a fixed, rigid metal partition of mass 1 kg which ensures that the temperature is always the same in the two compartments. s The sides ofthe cylinder and the piston are Wel Insulated. The volume of compartment, LOO Ais 0.3888 m’ and it itially contains air at 400 kPa, 87°C. Compartment B initially has a volume of 0.2 m?and contains 2 kg of air. Heat is now slowly added to compartment ‘A until the pressures become equal in both the compartments. Determine (2) the mass of the air in compartment A, (b) the initial pressure in compartment B, (c) the final pressure and temperature of the air in both the compartments (d) the work interaction for the air in compartments A and B and (@) the heat transferred to compartment A. For air, Pv=288T, where P is the pressure in N/m®, v is the specific volume in m?/kg and T is the temperature in K, and C, = 720 J/kg.K. The specific heat capacity of the metal partition may be taken to be 0.386 kJ/kg°K. [16 marks]
