Introductory Message
Welcome to Statistics and Probability for Senior High School!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of

the Schools Division of Iloilo City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western
Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD).
This is developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and
responsible adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to
12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials

aimed to guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and
time using the contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist
the learners in acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for
productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Statistics and Probability for Senior High School will help you
facilitate the teaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential
Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter
between you and learner. This will be made available to the learners with the
references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Statistics and Probability for Senior High School is developed to

help you continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material
provides you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning.
Being an active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then
perform the activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to
your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY ACTIVITY SHEET

Finding the Possible Values of a Random Variable

I. Learning Competency with Code

Finds the possible values of a random variable.(M11/12SP-IIIa-3)

II. Background Information for Learners

A random variable is a set of possible values from a random

experiment. We use a capital letter, like X, Y, or Z to avoid confusion with
the variables used in Algebra or we can use any letter in the alphabet.
A random variable has a probability distribution (will be discussed in
the next activity sheet) that represents the likelihood that any of the
possible values would occur. Let’s take for example that the random
variable, X, is the number on the top face of a die when it is rolled once.
The possible values for X will be 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Another classic
example of a random variable is the outcome of tossing a coin. We
consider a probability distribution in which the outcomes of a random event
are not equally likely to happen. If random variable, Z, is the number of
tails we get from tossing three coins, then Z could be 0, 1, 2 or 3. This
means that we could have no tails, one tail, two tails or three tails on a
three-coin toss.
To understand better in finding the possible values of random
variables, do the activity below.
Example 1: Defective Laptops
Suppose three laptops are tested at random. We want to find out the
number of non-defective laptops that appear. Thus, to each outcome in the
sample space we shall assign a value. These are 0, 1, 2 and 3. We will
assign a 0 if there is no non-defective laptop; 1 if there is one non-defective
laptop; 2 if there are two non-defective laptops; and 3 if there are three
non-defective laptops. The number of non-defective laptops is a random
variable. Complete the table. The first two outcomes are done for you.

So, the possible values of a random variable are 0, 1, 2 or 3.

Guide Questions:
1. How will you find the values of the random variable?
2. How will you describe the problem above? Is the variable discrete
random variable or a continuous random variable?

Example 2: Tossing Coins

Suppose two coins are tossed. Let X be the random variable

representing the number of heads that occur. Find the values of the
random variable X.

So, the possible values of the random variable X are 0, 1, or 2.

IV. Activity Proper

General Directions: In answering the exercises in the Learning Activity Sheet

(LAS), please be reminded not to write anything here. All answers must
be written in a separate sheet of paper. Read each problem carefully
and answer it systematically. If solution is required, encircle your final
answer.

Exercise 1: Drawing Balls from a Jar

Two balls are drawn in succession without replacement from a jar

containing 6 pink balls and 5 purple balls. Let Y be the random variable
representing the number of pink balls. Find the values of the random variable
Y. Complete the table below.

Possible Value of Random Variable Y

Outcomes (number of pink balls)

Guide Questions:
1. Were you able to complete the table? If yes, how? If no, why?
2. Were you be able to find the values of a random variable? If
yes,how? If no, why?

Exercise 2: Tossing Four Coins

Four coins are tossed. Let T be the random variable representing the
number of tails that occur. Find the values of the random variable T.

Possible Value of Random Variable Y

Outcomes (number of tails)

Guide Questions:
1. How will you describe a random variable in your own words?
2. How do you find the possible values of a random variable?

  V. Reflection

Instruction. Reflect on the following questions and write your response in your
journal.

Head: What is something in the lesson that made you think?

Heart: How do you feel about the lesson presented?

Bin: Is there something in the lesson that you disagree with?

Bag: What are your “takeaways” from the lesson?
