In India rainy season exits for months
and affects whole of India. As we all
know that in monsoon season weather
outside is rainy and there is lack of
sunlight in day time so we all are left
with no other choice but to dry our
clothes indoors.

So in order to understand the needs and

problems that people face while drying
their clothes in rainy season, we
conducted a survey to know about their
experience and problems and we got 89
responses in this survey.
Firstly we asked everyone if
they face any problem while
drying their clothes in indoor
during rainy season and in
response to that we found out
that 95.6% of them marked
“yes” option and very small
percentage of them marked
“maybe” and “no” option.
We asked then what problems exactly they face and we came to know that major
problems people face while drying their clothes indoor are-

• It takes much more time to dry clothes indoor during rainy season as humidity
increases in rainy season.

• Not having enough space in

indoor for drying clothes.

• Drying clothes in indoor leads to

unpleasant smell of wet clothes in
home.

• It make house look untidy and

not welcoming place for guests.
When asked about how do they dry
clothes in indoor during rainy season we
came to know that most of them hang
their clothes on hanger/stand or keep
them on chair/table and leave it under fan
to dry.

When asked about if they find any

difference between clothes dried in indoor
and that which is dried outside in sunlight
85.4% of them answered that clothes
when dried in indoor has musty or damp
smell and when we wear that itchiness or
irritation is felt.
While 12.4% of them answered that they
feel no difference.
In rainy season we mostly use dryer of washing
machine in home but after that also clothes don’t dry
completely so we need to again leave clothes in
indoor for drying.

29.2% of them answered that it takes 5-6 hours,

24.7% answered 4-5 hours and 19.2% answered
that it takes even more time for clothes to dry even
after using dryer of washing machine and leaving it
under full speed fan for drying.

As many times dryer of washing machine is not

available when we live in hostels or PG or go for
trips so for this case 50.6% of people answered that
it takes almost 1 day or more than that for clothes
to dry when we don’t use dryer of washing machine
and if we leave our clothes under full speed fan for
drying.
Finally when we asked
everyone if they feel that
we need any
device/solution that can
dry our clothes in much
lesser time specially when
weather is rainy and there
is no sunlight outside we
found that 76.4% of them
answered that they
need such device and
15.7% of them answered
“maybe”
As drying clothes indoor takes very much time therefore it might lead to growth of germs and
bacteria.
Research has shown that that wet clothes draped on drying frames or radiators can raise moisture
levels by up to 30% which can cause serious breathing problems especially in asthma patients.
Research has also shown that drying clothes inside can also be responsible for health issues like
skin infection and also lead to dampness in house which can attract a variety of fungus, bacteria
and viruses.

According to our survey 95.5% of people face problems while drying

clothes inside house during rainy season and 76.4% of them need
any device/solution that can dry our clothes in much lesser time
because if we can dry our clothes in much lesser time it will
automatically become solution for all other problems like growth of
germs/bacteria , dampness and space problem.

Sometime we forget to put our clothes for drying and many people
need them to be worn in alternate days such as any uniform so we
need to find faster way for drying clothes.
USER – This is the problem faced by almost every household in the country during the monsoon
season because of the increase in the humidity in the atmosphere for a longer duration of day and
lack of sunshine in the daytime.

NEED- The need is to have clothes easily dried and readily available for use even during the
monsoon season.

Problem Statement – “To develop any device/solution so that clothes can be easily dried indoors
during rainy season in much lesser time in a safe way that do not damage our clothes.”

MIND MAP
OF IDEA
NO.1
IDEA NO. 1

Drying clothes simply means to get rid of water absorbed in clothes through the process of
evaporation. Evaporation can be accelerated either by any heating source or any air
source.
So to speed up the process of drying we can develop a device looking like normal hanger
but with air source and heating source attached to it so that it can serve the purpose of
hanging clothes as well as can speed up the process of drying.

Here air source used is axial fans (12V dc) and for heating source light bulb (240V ac) is
used. The two axial fans are attached at both ends to facilitate the hanging of clothes and
bulb is placed at centre. The enclosed ring is also there to ensure that it will not fall off the
rack and break the bulb light.
The body of the connecting part can be made up of PVC pipe material.
And in the middle there will be controller board which will regulates the modes. The
controller board consists of microcontroller, LED display and push buttons.
IDEA NO. 1
The idea here is to develop a device in the shape of hanger which can become alternative of
normal hangers as it will speed up the process of drying as well as can be used as hanger for drying
clothes.
It will have axial fans attached to the two ends and a bulb (which act as heat source) at center. In
the middle it will consist of controller board which consists of microcontroller and LCD display.
Microcontroller is used in various automatically controlled products and devices such as in tv remotes
or remote controlled toys etc.

So here also microcontroller can be used which will use general purpose input-output function to
determine the mode of operation based on button input. Here three modes can be used which are
only fan mode or only heat mode or both heat + fan mode depending upon the requirement.
For the control system to work(which is the control loop) in microcontroller for giving the signal to the
power board it has to be coded in any programming language.

Here the system will obtain power supply from wall socket and then it will power up the controller
board and the controller will give signal about the modes to the power board for operating fans and
bulb accordingly.
IMPROVED VERSION OF IDEA NO.1
In previous idea instead of using lighting bulb any other heating element can be used to improve the
drying and energy consumption efficiency. So the improved version of that idea is to use the working
principle of hair dryer and giving the device the shape of hanger so that it can serve two purpose of
hanging clothes as well as drying clothes speedily by blowing hot air.

Here the heating element will be nichrome wire coils.

When we will plug it, the circuit will supply current to the
heating element and the motor, which will make the
attached fan spin drawing air from surrounding through
small inlets. This air will flow over to the heating element
and the generated heat will warm the air.
This hot air will be blown out through outlets thus speeding
up the process of drying.

Such type of device will be also portable.

IDEA NO.2 (Bhoomi Verma , 19119023)
Brain Storming
Objective is to provide
a dryer apparatus
capable of removing
the moisture from the
clothes inserted
therein in a relatively
short period of time.

The main idea is to

design a dryer apparatus. It is particularly
concerned with a clothes dryer using
halogen-type lights as a means for extracting
humidity from the clothes.
IDEA NO.2
WORKING PRINCIPLE
A clothes dryer apparatus using halogen-type light as drying means
is described herein. The dryer apparatus includes a rotary dryer
drum in which the articles to be dried are placed. The halogen-type
light generates a flow of photons which are directed in the dryer
drum to thereby photonically bombard the articles placed therein to
thereby dry the articles. The moisture-containing air of the dryer
drum is exhausted through an exhaust outlet by an exhaust fan. An
inlet fan is provided to both cool the halogen-type light and to
supply the air warmed by the cooling of the halogen-type light in
the dryer drum to thereby prevent condensation of vapor phase
water in the dryer drum. The whole apparatus can be controlled by
a timer switch .

IDEA NO.3 (GALLA SRI TANMAI -19119036)
BRAIN STORMING
 We need to build a stand with metal rods .
 we need to place the washed clothes on the Metal rods . These rods are heated up to some
temperature to warm the clothes.
 We need to plug in the stand, each rack on the stand warms , and the clothes that we hang
also dry quicker.
 This machine use electricity to heat up clothes and are made from metals.

 Over heated is also not preferable , since overheat may cause damage to the clothes.

 It will be more efficient than leaving clothes on stand for drying.

IDEA NO.3
WORKING PRINCIPLE
 When we plug in the machine , the current passes then the rods gets heated.
 The rods get heated gently and clothes dry due to the heat produced.

MIND MAPPING
IDEA NO.4 (KATTAMURI SAI VARSHINI -19119060)
Brain storming
We usually notice the heat from the condenser of a split ac unit goes in vain.
Noticing this fact and using the air to dry wet clothes will use the energy
properly.
Idea
The heat from the condenser of RAC will be injected into a drying cabinet. In
order to decrease the heat loss from the drying cabinet, the walls will be
insulated.
IDEA NO.4
The ambient air was used to cool condenser and results in hot drying air. In conventional
split-type RAC, the condenser is placed outside and it is cooled by ambient air. Here, the
condenser was covered with a box in order to collect the hot air. The hot air was flowed
into drying cabinet using an auxiliary fan. By using the fan, the vapor compression cycle
will be operated normally.

The VCC will be operated to cool the air in the conditioned space and the condenser was
covered to result the hot air. The drying cabinet was operated using the hot drying air
from the condenser.
Working principle
The method of using the heat from a condenser of vapor compression cycle is
known as heat pump drying.

Mind Mapping
IDEA NO.5 (GEDELA INDU -19119038)

BRAIN STORMING:
• In rainy season, especially when its raining, we actually shift
our clothes into our house and we will hang them
everywhere in the house.
• Instead of hanging them which is uncomfortable, we came
up with an idea to hang the clothes in some type of closed
container.
• This container sounds like an electric clothes dryer.
IDEA NO.5
IDEA:
• The idea is to develop a clothes dryer which uses external power to dry clothes in a
short period of time and using less efforts.
• The dryer should be simple in design, easy to handle, no need of skilled labour and
economical.
• Simply, it is a container which contains a base with wheels so it can be movable and a
drying cabinet made up of mild steel frame surrounded by sheetmetals inside which
a cloth holder is placed. It holds the hangers that are made up of steel wire.
• All this model is protected by a frame body.
• After placing wet clothes on the cloth holder with the help of hangers, switch on the
system to dry the clothes.
IDEA NO.5
IDEA NO.5
WORKING PRINCIPLE:
• When the switch is on, the motor starts right away and produces current.
• A shaft is provided to transmit power which is obtained due to tangential
force with the help of chain.
• The air blowers provides a large flow of air to the cabinet. This air flow will
help to reduce the time of drying.
• Stresses on shaft occurs due to the force exerted by the clothes hanged.
• By using both power and external air flow clothes will dry very easily.
• We are using bearings on top and bottom which is used to avoid the high
friction between the surfaces.
IDEA NO.5
COMBINED FINAL IDEA
The final idea is to develop a cloth dryer rack. Instead of putting clothes on any stand or
rod for drying, we can put clothes inside this rack for faster drying of clothes.

It will consist of heater which will blow hot air in the wardrobe from below. The air will pass
over nichrome wire which will heat it. The heater will have timer, main circuit, mini fan,
heating element and power cable.

The wardrobe exterior which will act like a cover can be made up of nylon fabric as
nylon is thermal insulator and will not allow hot air to go to the surrounding and hot air will
keep on circulating inside.

The main framework of the rack will be made up of stainless steel rod pipe which will be
connected through connectors to make the rack stronger.
