Section 1
GENERAL

1.1 SCOPE
The standards contained in this publication apply to all valve surge arresters for alternating-current
systems, including arresters that are an integral part of other apparatus.

1.2 REFERENCED STANDARDS

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
3 Park Avenue
New York, NY 10016

IEEE C62.1-1989 (R1994) IEEE Standard for Gapped Silicon-Carbide Surge Arresters for AC
Power Circuits

IEEE C62.11-2005 IEEE Standard for Metal-Oxide Surge Arresters for AC Power Circuits (>
1 kV)

• IEEE C62.22-1997, IEEE Guide for Application of Metal-Oxide Surge Arresters for Alternating-
Current Systems, may also be of interest to users of this publication.

1.3 GENERAL
The standards given in this publication provide revisions, additional standards, and information that have
been approved by NEMA but which are not included in C62.11-2005.

Section 2
TESTING STANDARDS

2.1 RADIO INFLUENCE VOLTAGE TESTS

The following paragraph has been approved by NEMA to supplement IEEE C62.1 and IEEE C62.11.

2.1.1 Radio Influence Voltage Test

The test equipment, practices, and procedures for making the tests shall be as specified in IEEE C62.1
and IEEE C62.11. The permissible maximum radio influence voltage levels shall be as given in Table 2-1.

Table 2-1
MAXIMUM RADIO INFLUENCE VOLTAGE LEVELS
Voltage MCOV Maximum Voltage MCOV Maximum
Rating, kV Radio Rating, kV Radio
kV (2) Influence kV (2) Influence

36 29.0 150 294 235 1500
39 31.5 150

NOTE 1—Maximum permissible ambient radio influence voltages, according to whichever test is being performed, will be ½ of the
level specified in column 3.
NOTE 2—No levels of radio influence voltage are included for surge arresters rated above 294 kV because of the present lack of
data.

*MCOV values not established for secondary arresters.
