Subject : RESEARCH II STE Grade 8 (Quarter 1)

MELC 1 : The learner describes the nature of ideas

Objectives:
1. Recall the steps of a scientific method and apply it to solve a problem
2. Differentiate between invention and innovation
3. Enumerate the characteristics of a novel idea

Activity 1 : SCIENTIFIC METHOD

 Scientific method is an organized way that helps scientists answer a question or

begin to solve a problem.

Directions: Arrange the steps of scientific method in proper order.

Write your answer in a separate sheet of paper.

Hypothesis Interpretation of Data / Analysis of Results

Conclusion Problem
Observation Experiment

Activity 2 : SOLVING A PROBLEM THROUGH EXPERIMENTATION

Directions: Follow the steps in solving problems through a simple experiment to test the hypotheses.
Answer the guide questions in the Presentation of Data.

PROBLEMS:
1. Why do some objects fall faster than others?
2. What factors affect an object’s rate of fall?

HYPOTHESES:
1. The weight of an object affects its rate of fall. A heavier object would fall faster than a lighter one.
2. The size of an object affects its rate of fall. A smaller object would fall faster than a bigger one.
3. The shape on object affects its rate of fall.
4. The air affects an object’s rate of fall.

 TESTING HYPOTHESIS 1
Materials: a piece of stone and ½ sheet of paper cut cross wise
Procedure: 1. Crumple the paper until it is as big as the stone.
2. Drop the stone and the crumpled paper from the same height at the same time.

 TESTING HYPOTHESIS 2
Materials: crumpled paper used in testing hypothesis 1
½ sheet of paper cut cross wise
Procedure: 1. Crumple the ½ sheet of paper just a bit, so that its size is greater than that
of the first crumpled paper.
2. Drop the two crumpled pieces of paper from the same height at the same time.

 TESTING HYPOTHESIS 3
Materials: two pieces of ½ sheet of paper cut crosswise
Procedure: 1. Fold one piece of paper into a toy airplane. Leave the other piece of paper unfolded.
2. Drop the two objects face down, from the same height at the same time.
 TESTING HYPOTHESIS 4 Plan your own way of testing Hypothesis 4.

cut cross wise?
b. Does the size of an object affect its rate of fall: Yes or No? Explain your answer.

 HYPOTHESIS 3
a. Which piece of paper falls faster: the paper airplane or the unfolded ½ sheet of paper?

 HYPOTHESIS 4
a. Explain your simple experiment to test Hypothesis 4 in not more than 50 words.
b. Does air affect an object’s rate of fall?

CONCLUSION
a. In the presence of air, what factors affect an object’s rate of fall?
b. If air friction is disregarded, how do ALL objects fall?

Activity 3 : FAMOUS INVENTORS AND THEIR INVENTION

Directions: Match the invention with the scientist/inventor.

Write the LETTER your answer in a separate sheet of paper.

SCIENTIST/INVENTOR INVENTION

1. Alessandro Volta A. blinded in a childhood accident. He developed the Braille

system of reading for the blind.
2. Samuel Morse B. invented the first process for producing color photography
3. Louis Braille C. discovered the antibiotic penicillin by accident from the
mold Penicillium notatum
4. Kirkpatrick Macmillan D. inventors who successfully designed, built and flew the
first powered aircraft in 1903.
5. James Clerk Maxwell E. used principles of electromagnet to develop a single
telegraph wire. He also invented Morse code, a method of
communicating via telegraph
6. Alexander Graham Bell F. invented fluorescent lighting and AC electricity
7. Alexander Fleming G. invented the first practical telephone
8. John Logie Baird H. invented the first electrochemical battery cell. It used zinc,
copper and an electrolyte, such as sulfuric acid and water.
9. Orville Wright and I. inventor of the pedal bicycle. His contribution was to make
Wilbur Wright a rear wheel driven bicycle through the use of a chain,
giving the basic design for the bicycle as we know it today.
10. Nikola Tesla J. invented the television and the first recording device.

INVENTION – is defined as the creation of a product or introduction of a process for the first time.
It is a product of the imagination, something that has never been made before.
PATENT is a government authority or license conferring a right or title for a set period, especially the
sole right to exclude others from making, using, or selling an invention.

INNOVATION - occurs if someone improves on or makes a significant contribution to an existing

product, process or service.

MELC 2 : The learner explains the meaning, characteristics,

and importance of research
Objectives:
1. Understand the meaning of research
2. Describe “novel” ideas
3. Enumerate the characteristics and importance of research

RESEARCH is a scientific investigation of a phenomenon which includes the collection, presentation,

analysis, and interpretation of facts that link man’s speculation with reality. The word is derived
from an old French word CERCHIER meaning “to seek” or “search”. The prefix “re” means “again”
signifying replication of research.

Characteristics of a novel idea

(1) ORIGINALITY OF THE RESEARCH IDEA
A researcher has to prove that there is no similar study has been conducted elsewhere on the
same topic using the same framework for the analysis. The researcher needs to prove this in his/her
literature review by showing what previous studies have done and what they have not done or by
analyzing the gap in the previous studies. So, the gap is showing the originality.

(2) ORIGINALITY OF RESEARCH WRITING

The research writing must not duplicate a certain amount of similarities of other research
reports. Different institutions or publishers will have different similarity rate permissible to be in a
paper such as 20%, 25%, and so forth. Most of the publisher will check this through various
software or application such as "Turnitin" that able to check plagiarism using online platform.

ORIGINAL" CAN HAVE TWO MEANINGS:

1. It can mean that you are actually doing the research yourself, and your data is first-hand.
2. It can mean research that is unique, and nobody else has done similar research.

Activity 6 : GROUP MEETING

Directions: Meet with your group mates through Messenger video call or Google meet. The list of
groupings will be sent to you through Messenger. You are required to accomplish
the following:

1. Choose a leader for your (SIP) Science Investigatory Project group. He/she will be the group
leader in the duration of the research study from Grade 8 to Grade 10.
2. List down all possible SIP topics that your group can accomplish. Only one topic will
be subjected for approval.
3. The group leader will submit:
(a) list of possible SIP topics through Messenger
(b) grades of group members based on their participation in online meeting
(to be submitted together with written outputs during retrieval)

For the Leader only
