DAY 1
I. MINI-LESSON

Hello there! How are you? Today, we will be

learning something new about what are the
differentperipherals and devices. But before
that, I would like to know if you have any idea
about it?

INSTALLATION OF PERIPHERALS
AND OTHER DEVICES

Peripheral Devices
- Peripheral devices, also known as peripheral, computer peripheral,
input-output device, or input/output device, any of various devices
(including sensors) used to enter information and instructions into a
computer for storage or processing and to deliver the processed
data to a human operator or in some cases, a machine controlled
by the computer.

- Such devices make up the peripheral equipment of modern digital

computer systems.

- Peripherals are commonly divided into three kinds: input devices,

output devices, and storage devices.

- Input devices include typewriter-like keyboards; handheld devices

such as the mouse, trackball, joystick, trackpad, and special pen
with pressure-sensitive pad; microphone, webcams, and digital
cameras.

- Output equipment includes video display terminals, ink-jet and laser

printers, loudspeakers, headphones, and devices such as flow
valves that control machinery, often in response to computer
processing of sensor input data.
- Most auxiliary storage devices-as, for example, CD-ROM and DVD
drives, flash memory drives, ad external disk drives also double as
input/output devices. Even devices such as smartphones, tablet
computers, and wearable devices like fitness trackers and
smartwatches can be considered as peripherals.

FUNCTIONS OF SOME VARIOUS OUTPUT DEVICES

There are four different categories of output device: visual, data, print, and sound. Each
output device example has a specific history, so here I cover specifically how each device
works, when it became a part of technology history, popular brands on the market selling the
device, and a fun fact.

Device Mode Function

A monitor consists of a
screen, circuitry, a power
supply, buttons to adjust
screen settings, and a
Visual casing that contains all of
these components. A
monitor displays data from a
computer onto a screen so
the user can interact with the
Monitor data via a digital interface.

The function of a printer is

to create a copy of
whatever is sent from the
computer to the printer.
Print Printers take electronic data
sent from a computer and
generate a hard copy.

Headphones output audio

Computer speakers are

hardware devices that
transform the signal from the
computer's sound card into
Sound audio. Speakers create
sound using internal
amplifiers that vibrate at
different frequencies
according to data from the
computer. This produces
Computer Speaker sound.

known as an expansion

I. MINI – LESSON

In the previous lesson, you have learned

about some descriptions of the output
devices. Today is just a continuation of our
last topic. Are you ready to learn now?

INSTALLATION OF PERIPHERALS AND DEVICES

Here are the general procedures to install any peripheral devices:

1. Plug a mouse or keyboard into a USB port and Windows should

immediately recognize it and install generic drivers. Because PS/2
ports are not hot-pluggable, you must restart Windows after
plugging a mouse or keyboard into a PS/2 port.

2. You can later use Device Manager to uninstall, disable, or enable

most devices. However, USB devices are managed differently. To
uninstall a USB device such as the USB keyboard, use the
Programs and Features window.

3. Replacing the keyboard is pretty easy to do. Before you begin any
disassembly of a laptop, refer to the manufacturer documentation.
Here are typical steps that are similar to many models of laptops:

4. A touch screen is an input device that uses a monitor or LCD panel

as the backdrop for input options. In other words, the touch screen
is a grid that senses taps, finger pinches, and slides and sends
these events to the computer by way of a USB port or other type of
connection.

5. A KVM (Keyboard, Video, and Mouse) switch allows you to use one
keyboard, monitor, and mouse for multiple computers.

6. A barcode reader is used to scan barcodes on products at the point

of sale (POS) or when taking inventory.
7. Biometric device is an input device that inputs biological data about
a person, used to identify a person's fingerprint, handprint, face,
voice, eye, or handwritten signature.

8. A digital camera or camcorder can hold images and videos both in

embedded memory that cannot be removed or exchanged and in
removable flash memory cards.

9. Another input device is a Graphics tablet, also called a digitizing

tablet or digitizer, that is used to hand draw and is likely to connect
by a USB port. It comes with a stylus that works like a pencil on the
tablet.

10. A motion controller, sometimes called a motion sensor,

provides input to the computer by sensing the motion of your fingers
and hands.

Installing Local and Network Printers, Share an installed printer,

and remotely use a shared printer

1. A printer connects to a single computer or to the network. A local

printer connects directly to a computer by way of a USB port, serial
port, or wireless connection (Bluetooth or Wi-Fi). Some printers
support more than one method.

2. A local printer can be attached to a computer using a port (for

example, USB, serial, or wireless) on the computer. For some
network printers, it is possible to set up a local printer by using an
Ethernet cable connected to the Ethernet port on the network printer
and the Ethernet port on the computer.

3. A network printer can connect directly to a network with its own NIC.
A network printer is identified on the network by its IP address.

Connecting a wired printer (USB or Ethernet) is easy:

-- USB. Plug the USB cable into the printer and computer and
Windows installs the printer automatically.

-- Serial. For a printer with a serial port, plug the serial cable into the
printer and computer and install the printer as a local printer.

-- Ethernet. Plug the Ethernet cable into the printer and network wall
jack, switch, or router and install the printer as a network printer on
any computer on the network.

On the other hand, you can use the Windows 8/7 Devices and Printers
window to install a printer.

Installing a network printer is sometimes called mapping a printer.

Follow these steps to install a wired or Wi-Fi network printer, serial-port

printer, or Bluetooth printer in Windows:

1. Make sure the printer is connected to the network or the computer.

In Control Panel in Classic view, click Devices and Printers. In the
Devices and Printers window, click Add a printer. Windows searches
for available printers and lists them

Two general ways to share a printer on a network

-- Computer as a print server. When your computer hosting a printer

shares the printer with other computers on the network, the computer
is called a print server.

-- Hardware print server. To connect a USB, Bluetooth, or serial-port

printer to the network, you can use a hardware print server. This device
has a USB port for a USB printer and can connect to a Wi-Fi or Ethernet
network. Plug the USB cable from the printer into the USB port of the
hardware print server and connect the device to the network, using
either a wired or wireless connection.

Sharing an installed local or network printer with others on the

network

1. In the printer Properties box, click the Sharing tab. Check Share this
printer.

To install a shared printer on a remote computer, you can:

a. Use the Devices and Printers window or
b. Use File Explorer or Windows Explorer.

Here are the general steps for both methods

1. Devices and Printers window.

- On a remote computer, in the Devices and Printers window, click
Add a printer and follow the directions on screen to add a network
printer.

- Select the shared printer, which has a host name in the printer
address column. Windows attempts to use printer drivers found on
the host computer. If it doesn't find the drivers, you will be given
the opportunity to provide them on CD or another media.

- Printing to a file instead of producing a hard copy at a printer is called

virtual printing. The types of files you can virtually print depends on
the software installed on your system. To see your options for virtual
printing, open the Print menu or dialog box for an application.
