WORD HUNT
Would you like an opportunity to earn 1 SNA point? well
here's your chance! I am going to be hiding a word
throughout the newsletter, and the first 5 people to send
me the word in the google form that I will link below will
get 1 sna point. I will be bolding/italicizing and changing
the color of letters of the word throughout the
newsletter, and your job is to find the letters and make
them into the word. for example, if the word is "neuron" I
will bold/italicize and change the color of the letters
throughout the newsletter. All the words will be
medical/nursing related! The word will also only be one
word. Remember the letters will not be in the right order,
so you have to unscramble them and form the word. Good
luck! Email me at ksusnapmd@gmail.com if you have any
questions :)

Attached you will see two very tasty muffin recipes. I know
nursing school is stressful and sometimes we need to relax and
treat ourselves. A great way to do that is to take a break from
studying, do some baking, and then enjoy the delicious results.
One recipe is a blueberry muffin recipe and the other is a
chocolate chip muffin recipe. I have made both and they are
amazing!

Sometimes nursing school can feel extremely overwhelming.

Especially during your very first
nursing lectures. You may be thinking “what did I get myself
into?” or “How will I ever pass this
class?” I want every single new nursing student to know that you
will make it through. You were
accepted into this nursing program for a reason. You have the
capability to be successful in
everything you do.
If you feel unsure or discouraged about something, reach out to
an older nursing student or a
friend that you’ve made in the program. They will validate that
everything you are feeling is
100% normal. You will succeed if you put in the work. You’ve got
this! Every one of us will
make amazing nurses!

"One thing I found that I needed constant reminders for during my first couple
semesters at WSON was to take things one step at a time. It is really easy to
get overwhelmed in this program, as we all know. It's super important that if
you find yourself stressing, take a step back, breathe, and reevaluate. All your
peers are probably going through the same thing too, so don't be afraid to ask
for help or even just vent to a friend. Remember that many students before us
have gone through this program and succeeded, so if they can do it, you can
too! Don't go into experiences or even classes with a bias because someone
told you something bad about the class. Make everything your own experience
and enjoy it!!!!"

Tal Hershkovitz

I hope everyone is getting into routine again for the semester! There was a lot
going on in August but we made it though and Fall is almost here! Nursing
school can definitely be stressful but don’t forget to make the most of it,
especially all of us seniors out there! We are so close to being done and we
need to try to enjoy the little things this year and practice some techniques
we are learning or have learned from Mental Health. For nursing students in
their first year, I want you to know it goes by quick. Also, do not forget about
reading those ATI books! Let’s have a great year guys!

it is always our priority to treat our patients with kindness and

fulfill that calling and inspire others to do the same through our
work. In this, we will find satisfaction in our work and see it as an

Study tips:

A good way to study for lecture tests and the corresponding ATI
exams is to use the ATI books that are given to you! I learned
this in my 3rd semester and I wish I would've utilized this study
method sooner. A few days after lecture, I would find the
corresponding chapter in the ATI exam, and highlight and make
my own notes and answer the 5 questions at the end of the
chapter. This was extremely beneficial for me in Mental Health
and Community

Students Working in Healthcare While in Nursing School and

Subsequent Burn Out

What is burnout? Burnout is characterized by a reduction in energy

that manifests in emotional exhaustion, lack of motivation, and feelings
of frustration. Many of us students who have worked in a health-care-
related setting before getting accepted into nursing school may be
burned out before starting our nursing classes. In my case, I worked 2 ½
years in a senior living facility. I got hired on January 15th of 2020. My
whole healthcare career has been amid covid. With covid, many of us
saw and experienced a lot of emotional traumas. Covid forced us to
work harder than ever with fewer supplies and PPE than before. I am
sure I am not alone when I say at some points, I wondered if nursing
was for me, and I wanted to quit many times.
When you are feeling burned out it can be hard to destress and
recuperate. Here are 3 tips that have helped me escape these feelings:
Reminding myself that I am not alone. Many of my coworkers feel the
same way as I do so, talking with them, sharing our frustrations, and
giving positive words of encouragement helps to raise our spirits.
Make a reminder board of why you wanted to go into nursing in the first
place. I bought a cheap corkboard from Walmart and pinned up all the
praises I got from my patients, residents, and co-workers. This
reminded me that I am made to be a nurse and I have been able to
make a difference in others' lives.
Lastly, I made sure to keep up with my hobbies and other passions. It is
okay to leave your job-related stress at the door. As nurses, we tend to
make nursing our entire life and even sometimes let it take over our
personalities. This is not always healthy, and it is great to remind
yourself of who you were before nursing. Taking time to make art,
playing instruments and music, and reading are great hobbies to help
relax and escape from burnout.
Sometimes burn-out can seem inevitable and there is no way out but
hopefully using these tips can help lessen the feelings of exhaustion
and frustration while also reinstating your motivation and positive
outlook. Just remember you are not alone; millions are experiencing the
same feeling every day. These feelings will not last forever. You will
make a great nurse and you will make a difference! Keep your head up!
You were made for this role!

Hi everyone! I wanted to share some study resources that I have found to be

helpful in addition to lectures and reading textbooks

1.YouTube- Simple nursing, Registered nurse RN:

a. I found Simple nursing to be incredibly helpful in having a visualization of the

lecture content especially in classes like Pathophysiology and Pharmacology.
Simple nursing also helps in studying for the NCLEX by giving mnemonics and
study tips.
b. Registered nurse RN was useful for classes like Health Assessment and Holistic. I
also used many of her videos to help me learn how to make my care plans.

2. Picmonic:

a. Picmonic is very helpful for those who are visual learners because it allows you
to learn concepts from the lecture in a storybook format. Picmonic gives
mnemonics and a storyline to help you memorize content in a fun way. I found
this resource to be useful in Holisitic, Health Assessment, and Pharmacology.

3. Test Reviews

a. Test reviews are often held before an exam in classes such as Pathophysiology
and Pharmacology. Even if you feel like you don’t have any questions, these
reviews can be really helpful to hear other people’s questions and get a better
explanation on something you might’ve been confused about during lecture.
b. Test reviews after the exam allow you to look at what questions you missed and
learn the rationales behind the question. This can help you improve your test
taking strategies by changing how you answer questions on future exams.

4. PrepU

a. PrepU helped me prepare for exams in Holistic and Adult Health. PrepU helps
you learn test-taking strategies for exams and tests how well you know the
content so you’re able to apply it on the exams.

5. ATI

a. ATI helped me learn how to take nursing school exams by teaching me test-
taking strategies and giving me practice questions for the proctored ATI exams.
ATI was useful in studying for Holisitc because nursing school exams are so
different from exams I’ve had in the past. This is the first time you’re seeing
these different questions that are being used to prepare you for the NCLEX and it
can be very overwhelming if you don’t know how to answer them. ATI taught me
how to choose the best options out of a list of seemingly all correct answers and
prioritize interventions to specific situations. ATI also provides rationales to the
questions to help you better understand why a question may or may not be the
best choice.

Brown Sugar Simple Syrup for Coffee

This is a really simple way to make a yummy flavor to add into your coffees at
home and to save
you some money! (Because we all need a little bit of that right now)

Ingredients:
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1 cup water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
cinnamon (optional)

Instructions:
1. Add the brown sugar and water to a saucepan and cook on medium-high
heat until all of the sugar is fully dissolved and it starts to simmer (10-15 min).
Stir occasionally throughout.
2. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in vanilla extract.
3. Add cinnamon if desired and stir in as well.
4. Let the syrup cool in the pan for about an hour and then transfer to an
airtight container.

Hello fellow nursing students! I hope your semester has started well and you
are ready to grind through the rest. Nursing school is about dedication and
hard work because we are going to be saving lives! When studying long days
and not getting any rest, just remember why you started this and let that help
you get through. Nursing school is hard, but we are smart and can succeed.
Remember C’s get degrees! To end this, below is a more detailed version of
the SBAR. It tells you exactly what you should say next while talking with
providers because sometimes figuring out where to insert information in SBAR
can be hard since it is broader.

To all the amazing future nurses in our program, I wanted to share a special
quote. I have a notebook for clinical, and the front cover has this great
message from Florence Nightingale: "How very little can be done under the
spirit of fear." I think this is important to think about, and I would just
encourage everyone this semester to remember that you've got this! Whatever
you might be nervous for, or afraid of, you can do it! If it's that big exam, or
competency testing, or even the first day of clinical, just remember to take a
deep breath and know that you've come this far for a reason and will continue
to do awesome things. Never be afraid to ask for help either. There is always
someone to help you, whether it's a friend, your mentor, or even your
professors.

Hey nursing students!

A tip I’d like to share with all the new nursing students is to take
the opportunity to work in the hospital setting as a tech/CP. There
are plenty of other things you’ll get to experience that you might
not get the opportunity to do so during clinical. It can also help
you better understand the hospital setting because you’d have
hands on practice & will appreciate it more!
Good luck to all you & I hope everyone has a great semester!

My biggest tip for nursing school is figuring out what learning/studying

style works best for you early on. You will carry this style throughout the
rest of nursing school. For me, creating colorful flashcards and studying
them as I create them works best. Give yourself a few days minimum
per PowerPoint/topic and recall things out loud! Don’t wait for the last
minute, and relisten to lectures if you need to. Take notes during
lectures because sometimes things make sense during class, but you
won’t remember once you’re reviewing the PowerPoint later on. Other
examples include creating notes (written or typed), drawing diagrams,
and having a study group. Finding what works for you will allow you to
pass the first time around! You got this!
