The Urban Extent of Ahmedabad in 2013 was 27,409 hectares, increasing at an
average annual rate of 1.9% since 2000. The urban extent in 2000 was 21,292 hectares, increasing at an average annual rate of 2% since 1989, when its urban extent was 17,192 hectares. (Atlas of Urban Expansion). Ahmedabad is one of the hottest investment destinations in western India after Mumbai. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Ahmedabad in 2010 is estimated to be $160 billion where denim fabrics, gems and jewelry are the major contributors for the economy of Ahmedabad. The city constitutes 21.5% of total industries in the state and employees 18% workers all over the state. Ahmedabad has nearly 14% of investments in stock exchanges in India. With nearly 23, 734 small scale industries (SSI), 422 large and medium scale industries the district alone generates employment for 1, 75,000 jobs. Some of the big names that have come in the last 5 – 10 years post TATA & Ford are Maruti Suzuki, Honda Two Wheelers, Voltas, Bao Steel, Nivea, Alstom, Graizano, Minda, Vestas group.
