path on a WAN port. It can serve as an intermediate node
where traffic is transported from WAN port to WAN port
based on the label in the MPLS header. Or it can perform
both functions at the same time for different services.
The label switched paths over the network are
bidirectional and co-routed. This means a symmetrical
delay under all circumstances which is important for time
synchronization protocols or services that support tele-
protection.
The different service types like E-LINE, E-LAN, E-TREE and
combinations allows the operator to create for each
application a different logical network on top of the XTran
physical infrastructure.
The entire setup of the network is static provisioned via a
network management system, called TXCare platform.

Managing your network with TXCare

A network is a complex interworking of different nodes
that require a lot of attention. It is imperative that this is
planned carefully and thoughtfully. Network
configurations should be done without adversely affecting
your running applications. Network failures need to be
detected, diagnosed and repaired. Service Level
Agreements should be monitored and ensured. For
security reasons it is important that users are logged and
an audit trail is created. That is why the XTran product
family provides you with the TXCare management
system.“Takes”-Care management has taken the features
of the RFC 5951 and turned them into a workable Network
Management System.

Configuration
Under configuration OTN Systems understands an easy
and rapid deployment of a new network, an automatic
discovery of an existing network and the possibility to add
nodes to a network without hassle. The operator is able to

locating a certain event.

Log files of the network can be written on a hard drive.

TXCare will assume that something went wrong and will
reboot the network element in the previous firmware
version. This will prevent network elements from being
lost while upgrading.
TXCare provides a full report of all the network elements
and their firmware version.
Northbound integration
The northbound interface is organized as add-on module
in the TXCare platform which receives their information
through the TXCare server and forward the information if
needed to the umbrella management layer via SNMP. The
communication will always pass through the TXCare
server. The reason for this is that the security and central
login happens from a single configuration point just like
any other client login.
The northbound interface is always intended for
monitoring purposes only, this will guarantee consistency
and will avoid configuration failures that could jeopardize
the reliability of the network. Python scripts are available
and can be used to configure the network.

Radius integration
TXCare supports the connection to a radius server for user
authentication. In that case user information can be
organized and maintained from a central infrastructure.
NMS redundancy
The TXCare installation can be made redundant via the
TXCare redundancy feature. In that case an Active TXCare
is backed-up via standby TXCare in the same or different
location.
Database synchronization between the active and the
standby TXCare is automatically done via a dedicated LAN
connection. In case TXCare is equipped with a northbound
interface each TXCare has its own northbound interface.

Attacks on the control plane:
The XTran portfolio uses the MPLS-TP standard and does
not rely on a dynamic control plane for setting up or
maintaining the network performance. Instead of a control
plane the XTran network is managed through a network
management layer. All management traffic is exchanged
via an in band communication channel deployed over the
XTran network. So it is impossible to fake signaling or
reservation protocols which might lead to cross
connecting VPN’s to tap traffic
The management channel between TXCare and the nodes
(DCN) is totally separated from the user traffic and resides
on its own MPLS-TP tunnel and pseudowire. All traffic that
is exchanged over the DCN is encrypted via SNMPv3. This Attacks on the Management Plane
