Adjective Clauses

An adjective clause is a dependent clause used as an adjective; it modifies noun or


pronoun. These clauses are introduced by two different kind of words which always
occur just after the noun that the clause modifies. An adjective clause is also called
relative clause.
1. Adjective clauses are usually introduced by the relative pronoun who,whom, whose,
which and that. These pronouns function in noun position in the clauses they
introduce.

- Who for substituting people as subject.


- Whom for substituting people as object.
- Which for substituting things either as subject or object.
- Whose for substituting people as subject showing possessiveness.
- That for substituting either thing or people as object or object.

For example :

Who
- The man is sitting under the tree.
- The man is my uncle.
The man who sitting under the tree is my uncle.

Whom
- Do you recognize the man?
- You met him at the party.
Do you recognize the man whom you met at the party?

Whose
- The girl is beautiful.
- Her hair is curl.
The girl whose hair is curl is beautiful.

Which
- He built the hotel in 1990.
- The hotel is in Bulak Lauk Street.
He built the hotel which is in Bulak Lauk Street.

That
- The English Teacher gives home work.
- The home work is very difficult.
The English Teacher gives home work that is very difficult.

2. Adjective clauses may also be introduced by the subordinate conjuctions when,


where and why.
When
- She came on the day.
- Her grandmother died.
She came on the day when her grandmother died.

Where
- This is the house.
- Susan was born.
This is the house where Susan was born.

Why
- Can you remember the reason.
- She was dismissed.
Can you remember the reason why she was dismissed.

Combine the sentences by using adjective clauses!
