Objective
Advise customers of the availability of an upgrade kit that provides a more robust encoder design.

Description
In the continued effort to improve our equipment, NOV is introducing the new cULus, ATEX, IECEx, and
AEx certified XP5 encoder design for improved accessibility, installation, and reliability. As opposed to the
existing shaft mounted encoders or pulley driven encoders, the new encoder is a bearing-less modular
design, which includes a sensor and rotor (see Figure 1). The modular design allows customers to install,
remove, and inspect the encoder without removing the Top Drive motor blower. By eliminating the
bearing and pulley drive, and adding wiring error protection, the new design eliminates the three most
common reasons for encoder failures. NOV has performed temperature, contamination, and endurance
testing to verify the design for top drive applications.

Solution
NOV now offers the Kit, Magnetic Encoder (P/N 17770707-001) upgrade, which includes the new
encoder, rotor, hardware, and kit drawing with schematic and installation instructions. NOV is introducing
this optional upgrade to customers who would like to update their fleets with the latest encoder for
improved accessibility, installation, and reliability.
