Table 5 Strapping Settings

Strapping Setting Description

ST210/211 RTXD + CNTR terminating network
ST220/221 When the interface circuit is situated at the end of an RS485 bus, this bus must be properly
ST230/231 terminated by interconnecting the two RS485 wires at the bus end, and by setting the strapping
in the «ON» position.
ON - A terminating network is provided for a proper line termination.
OFF - The RS485 bus is not terminated.
ST212/213/214 RS485 / RS422
ST222/223/224 Each interface circuit can be set to:
ST232/233/234
485 - the RS485 mode: to interconnect RS485 busses
422 - the RS422 mode: to be used in an RS422 multidrop network
The three interface circuits of one single card can be set differently. The interface circuits of
one single subnetwork can be set to a different mode, if necessary.
ST215 RTS signal externally applied or permanently active
ST225 If an RTS signal is used in the RS422 mode (strapping ST3x1 in position «EN»), the following
ST235 settings are possible.
RTS EXT - The RTS signal is externally applied.
RTS ON - The RTS signal is permanently active.
ST216 Galvanic separation
ST226 The signal ground reference of each circuit is connected to the insulated ground of the DC-DC
ST236 converter. However, sometimes it may be useful to connect this reference to the front panel
directly or indirectly (the grounding). The following settings are possible.
FL - The signal ground of the line interface is floating compared to the front panel. This is
the default setting, which is recommended when the equipment connected to the circuit
is grounded.
FP - The signal ground of the line interface is connected to the front panel. This setting
is recommended if the connected equipment is separated from the ground.
RC - The signal ground of the line interface is connected to the front panel via a capacity VDR
network. This setting is used if the connected equipped is grounded, but one intends to
conduct the high frequencies to the ground.
ST310 Clock
ST320 For an interface circuit set to the RS422 mode, an internal or external clock can be set.
ST330
INT - Internal clock
EXT - External clock, for synchronous connections
NOTE: Normally, this strapping is set in the «INT» position for a circuit set to the RS485
mode.

ST311 RTS
ST321 With this strapping it is determined whether the interface circuit, set to the RS422 mode, uses
ST331 the RTS signal.
EN - The RTS signal is used to detect the beginning and end of a packet.
DIS - The beginning and end of a packet is detected according to the incoming data.
NOTE: For an interface circuit set for RS485, the RTS signal is usually not applied. In that
case set the strapping in the «DIS» position.
For an interface circuit set to the RS422 mode with external clock, an RTS signal is
usually set (either locally or externally). In that case set the strapping in the «EN»
position.

ST312 Monitor
ST322 Each interface has two monitors. Per interface circuit, only one monitor must be set. In an
ST332 RS485 network, at least one monitor must be set, and the same monitor may be set only once.
Monitor 1 is set by means of the leftmost strapping on the strapping block, monitor 2 by the
rightmost strapping.
ON - Setting of the monitor on the circuit concerned.
OFF - The monitor of the circuit concerned is not set.

AE-M229-E-5 Page 9 of 11
RS485 Interface Card Open Transport Network

The +5 V can be used to feed an external converter

(max. 500 mA).

OTN Systems provides a shielded cable S30827-C18-

Axx for the connection of external equipment. This ca-
ble contains 12 twisted wire pairs. One end is equipped
with a shielded male DB-25 connector, which can be
plugged in directly in the card connector. The other
side consists of loose cable ends. The cable is availa-
ble in four lengths, depending of the x index.

- S30827-C18-A20: 2 m
- S30827-C18-A30: 3 m
- S30827-C18-A50: 5 m
- S30827-C18-A100: 10 m

To avoid an interruption of the RS485 bus when the

cable connector is not connected on the card, two
RS485 pairs are connected in parallel.

The loose cable ends are connected to a patch panel,

on which the equipment to be connected arrives also.
(see Figure 5)

If an OTN RS485 circuit is situated at the end of the

RS485 bus, the two RS485 wires must be connected in
parallel on the external equipment, to avoid an open

- Number and the locations of slaves
- Profibus protocol version
- Distribution of master and slaves over the different
RS485 cards
- Distance between nodes
