Two types of Kufr (disbelief)

1) Major Kufr (that removes one from the fold Islaam) —

this is divided into 5 categories.

2) Minor Kufr that does not remove one from Islaam

‫ ُكفْر‬- Kufr

In the language of Arabic, it means, “enveloping” or

“concealing”

The religious meaning is “the absence of faith in Allaah,

and His Messenger, whether or not this is with denial, or
without denial.”
The First Category (of Major Kufr): Kufr of Disbelief
and Denial

“And who does more wrong than he who invents a lie

against Allaah or denies the truth (this Qur’aan), when it
comes to him? Is there not a dwelling in Hell for the
disbelievers?”

–(Surat al-Ankaboot, Ayat 68)

The Second Category:
Disbelief of Haughtiness and Arrogance while Knowing
the Truth

“..And (remember) when We said to the angels: “Prostrate

yourselves before Aadam.” And they prostrated except
Iblees, he refused and was proud and was one of the
disbelievers (disobedient to Allaah).”

– Surat al-Baqarah, Ayat 34

The Third Category: Kufr of Doubt and Uncertainty

“..And he went into his garden while in a state (of pride

and disbelief), unjust to himself. He said: “I think not that
this will ever perish. And I think not the Hour will ever
come, and if indeed I am brought back to my Lord (on the
Day of Resurrection), I surely shall find better than this
when I return to Him….”

– Surah al-Kahf ( l8): 35-38

The Fourth Category: Kufr of Abandonment

“But those who disbelieve, turn away from that whereof

they are warned.” - Surat al-Ahqaaf, from Ayat 3)

Shaykh Ahmad an Najmi divides this into 2 categories:

A Complete Turning Away

A Partial Turning Away
The Fifth Category: Kufr of Hypocrisy

“… That is because they believed, and then disbelieved;

therefore their hearts are sealed, so they understand
not…”

–(Surat al-Munaafiqoon, Ayat 3)

The Second Type of Disbelief:

It is lesser disbelief, and it does not remove one from the

religion, and it is the disbelief in action.

There are sins that have been referred to as disbelief in

the Book and the Sunnah, but they have not reached the
level of major disbelief. Examples of this are
ungratefulness of blessings, fighting a Muslim and
swearing by other than Allah.
The Second Type of Disbelief:

The proof is the saying of Allaah, the Most High:

“…And Allaah puts forward the example of a township (Makkah), that

dwelt secure and well-content; its provision coming to it in abundance from
every place, but it (its people) denied the Favors of Allaah (with
ungratefulness). So Allaah made it taste extreme of hunger (famine) and
fear, because of that (evil, i.e. denying Prophet Muhammad) which they (its
people) used to do. )

–(Surat an-Nahl, Ayat 112)
