ABSTRACT
Mishaps squander human life which creates permanent disorder consequence as victim of life.
Disaster may occur due to many reasons which includes brake failures, mislead of traffic signals,
inefficient driving skills and distraction while driving. Perhaps ample victims of misfortune are
often due to drunken drive. Though there are many amendments to punish drunken drivers
whichever is not effective for rapidly increasing traffic. Because traffic police cannot stand on
each and every road to check the car driver whether he/she has drunk or not. So, there is a need
for an effective system to check drunken drivers. Therefore, a detailed review is analysed and
presented below based on the existing system. According to the reflection of the survey, detect the
alcohol content using MQ 135 alcohol sensor, send value to IC, then buzzer will sound and police
can catch the drunkers. As a result, the rate of accidents will be depreciated.

CHAPTER-1
Introduction
1.1 INTRODUCTION: The alcohol sensor is technically referred to as a MQ 135 sensor which
detects ethanol in the air. When a drunk person breathes near the alcohol sensor it detects the
ethanol in his breathe and provides an output based on alcohol concentration. If there is more
alcohol concentration more LED's would lit.

1.2 MOTIVATION OF THE PROJECT: The main purpose behind this project is “Drunk driving
detection”. Now a days, many accidents are happening because of the alcohol consumption of the
driver or the person who is driving the vehicle. Thus Drunk driving is a major reason of accidents
in almost all contries all over the world.
Alcohol Detector is designed for the safety of the people seating inside the vehicle.

1.3 OBJECTIVES:
1) “Alcohol Detector project” can be used in the various vehicles for detecting whether the
driver has consumed alcohol or not.
2) This project can also be used in various companies or organization to detect alcohol
consumption of employees.

8
CHAPTER-2
Materials Required
2.1 ALCOHOL SENSOR: An alcohol sensor detects the attentiveness of alcohol gas in the air and
an analog voltage is an output reading. The sensor can activate at temperatures ranging from -10
to 50° C with a power supply is less than 150 Ma to 5V. The sensing range is from 0.04 mg/L to
4 mg/L, which is suitable for breathalyzers.

Figure 2.1: Alcohol Sensor

2.2 NE555 IC: The 555 timer IC is an integrated circuit used in a variety of timer, delay, pulse
generation, and oscillator applications. Derivatives provide two or four timing circuits in one
package. The design was first marketed in 1972 by Signetics. The 555 timer works by using three
5 kΩ resistors to divide the supply voltage in three. Two comparators compare these voltages to
the input voltage, then sets or resets a flip-flop accordingly.

Figure 2.2: 555 IC

2.3 BUZZER: A buzzer or beeper is an audio signaling device, which may be mechanical,
electromechanical, or piezoelectric. Typical uses of buzzers and beepers include alarm devices,

9
timers, train and confirmation of user input such as a mouse click or keystroke. When a voltage is
applied across the two electrodes, the piezoelectric material mechanically deforms due to the
applied voltage. This movement of the piezo disk within the buzzer creates sound in a similar
manner as the movement of the ferromagnetic disk in a magnetic buzzer or the speaker cone
mentioned above.

2.4 TRANSISTORS (p-n-p BC557 and n-p-n BC547): A transistor is a semiconductor device used
to amplify or switch electrical signals and power. The transistor is one of the basic building blocks
of modern electronics. It is composed of semiconductor material, usually with at least three
terminals for connection to an electronic circuit.

Figure 2.4: Transistor

2.5 2.2 uF Capacitor: The uF (microfarad) on a capacitor refers to the size of the capacitor. It
indicates how much electrical energy a capacitor can store for use.

10
Figure 2.5: Capacitor

2.6 RESISTORS (1K ohm ,1.5K ohm,2.2K ohm):

The main purpose of resistor is to reduce the current flow and to lower the voltage in any particular
portion of the circuit. It is made of copper wires which are coiled around a ceramic rod and the
outer part of the resistor is coated with an insulating paint. Wire wound resistors find applications
where balanced current control, high sensitivity, and accurate measurement are required like in
shunt with ampere meter. Photo resistors find application in flame detectors, burglar alarms, in
photographic devices, etc. Resistors are used for controlling temperature and voltmeter. Resistors
are used in digital multi-meter, amplifiers, telecommunication, and oscillators. They are also used
in modulators, demodulators, and transmitters.

11
2.7 LED: The lighting emitting diode is a PN junction. It is a specially doped diode and made up
of a special type of semiconductors. When the light emits in the forward biased, then it is called
light emitter diode.

Figure 2.7: LED

2.8 SWITCH: An electric switch is a device that interrupts the electron flow in a circuit. Switches
are primarily binary devices: either fully on or off and light switches have a simple design. When
the switch is turned off, the circuit breaks and the power flow is interrupted. Circuits consist of a
source of power and load.

Figure 2.8: Switch

12
2.9 CONNECTING WIRES: The conducting wire is a component of a circuit that carries the
current in the circuit. It is made out of a current conducting material like copper or tungsten. The
wire is covered by an insulating material like rubber for protections well as to avoid loss of current.
Conducting wires are represented by different colors in a circuit to distinguish their function. Green
is for grounding wire, black is for neutral and red usually is for the live wire.

Figure 2.9: Connecting Wire

2.10 CHARGING SOCKETS: There are two different types of charging sockets for electric
vehicles (EVs). The cable supplied with your EV will have a connector with two plugs: one for
the inlet or car socket and one for the EV charging socket at a charging station.

Figure 2.10: Charging Shockets

13
2.11 PCB BOARD: A printed circuit board or printed wiring board is a laminated sandwich
structure of conductive and insulating layers. PCBs have two complementary functions. The first
is to affix electronic components in designated locations on the outer layers by means of soldering.

Figure 2.11: PCB Board

2.12 4V BATTERY: A battery is a device that stores chemical energy and converts it to electrical
energy. The chemical reactions in a battery involve the flow of electrons from one material
(electrode) to another, through an external circuit. The flow of electrons provides an electric
current that can be used to do work.

Methology

3.1 CIRCUIT DIAGRAM:

Figure 3.1: Circuit Diagram for Alcohol Detector.

3.2 WORKING PRINCIPLE:

At first, alcohol sensor Will give signal to IC Through p-n-p transistor then the IC will give signal
to the npn transistor. Then n-p-n transistor will amplify the signal and give it to the buzzer the
buzzer will on after understanding the signal then it will be understood that the alcohol sensor is
detecting any alcohol the buzzer's sound will be changing by changing the value of the capacitor.
