We have gotten the good service experience of conventional type exhaust


valve.

On the other hand, a surprising improvement was obtained from W-seat Type
Exhaust Valve Bottom Piece on field test aiming at large extension of
overhauling interval.
Now, it has been adopted as standard recently.

We would hereby like to inform you of the details of W-seat Type Exhaust
Valve Bottom Piece and recommend you to apply it on your vessel at your
next overhaul maintenance of exhaust valve.

1. W-seat Type Exhaust Valve Bottom Piece
-Refer to Fig. 1 and Photo. 1.-

As shown in Fig. 1, the W-seat Type Exhaust Valve Bottom Piece has been
composed of two narrow concentric contact areas.

The effect of this structure is that carbon particles trapped between the
valve spindle seat and the bottom piece seat will be crushed at valve
closing process and squeezed out at valve opening process.
Consequently, since the generation of dent marks are eliminated
considerably, the valve seat is kept clean and long overhaul interval of the
exhaust valve can be achieved.

For your reference, service experience of the W-seat Type Exhaust Valve
Bottom Piece installed on 12K50MC-S is shown in the Photo. 1.
As can be seen from Photo. 1, the seat condition of valve spindle combined
with W-seat Type Bottom Piece is kept very clean even after about 8,000
hours in service compared with that of the conventional type after about
4,000 hours in service.
Accordingly, they can be used continuously without grinding.

2. Application

* Conventional type exhaust valve bottom piece in all MC/MCE/MC-C/


MC-S engine can be replaced with the W-seat Type Exhaust Valve
Bottom Piece.
However, if the dent marks are observed when replacing, the seat of
valve spindle is to be ground in order to reduce their size to less than
2 mm in diameter since there is a risk that too large dent marks may lead
to blow-by.

* Handling and grinding procedure of the W-seat Type Exhaust Valve


Bottom Piece are the same as that of the conventional type.
