RAILWAY ENGINEERING
A branch of civil engineering, which is concerned with
• design,
• construction,
• maintenance, and Operation of the railways
Railway engineering includes elements of
• Civil engineering,
• Mechanical engineering,
• Electrical engineering and
• Industrial engineering
Examples of the civil engineering tasks include the determination of
• Horizontal and vertical alignment designs,
• Location , layout and design of stations,
• Construction cost (estimating), and
• Establishment of railway signalling and controlling system

RAIL TRANSPORT
The infrastructure of the rail transport consists of two elements;
• The Railway Track ‐ very significant component to civil engineers
• A track made of steel rails on which trains are driven
• The Rolling Stock
• The different types of vehicles which roll (or run) on the railway tracks

Important aspects of the railway track (the permanent way) include;
• Materials required in the construction of the permanent way structure,
• Components of the permanent way,
• Track geometrics (vertical and horizontal alignments),
• Points and crossings,
• Railway stations and yards, and
• Signaling and interlocking systems

RAIL TRANSPORT
The rolling stock include three categories of vehicles;
• The Locomotives,
• The Coaching Stock (Passenger Coaches), and
• The Goods Stock (Wagons)

CHARACTERISTICS OF RAIL TRANSPORT
Rail transport has the following typical characteristics;
1. Its primary market is the intercity freight
2. For passenger operations, rail serve short to intermediate trips
3. The mode provides moderate to slightly high speeds
4. Moderate accessibility
5. It has high capital cost
6. Though it has high capital cost, it is characterised by low productivity
7. The main advantage of rail mode lies on its low operating cost per ton‐km
8. Its environmental impact is relatively low

TYPES OF RAILWAY SYSTEMS
• There are two ways of looking at the types of the railway systems;
1. The type of construction
• Surface railways
• Underground railways
• Elevated railways
• Tube railways
2. Application of the railway system
• Mainline: Railway used for freight and passenger transport
• Metro and/or Light rail: Urban passenger transportation systems that serve cities
and extended urban areas
• High Speed Rail: Rail transportation that is capable of speeds in excess of 120km/h

ROLLING STOCK
Rail transport has two types of assets for its operations;
• The rolling stock
– These are vehicles that move on the rails
– They include the powered (power units) or unpowered (trailing units)
The fixed stock (also called the rail infrastructure)
• These are non‐movable stock which are necessary for railway operations
• They include the track, signals, stations, buildings, electric wires, etc.
The rolling stock are of different types serving different purposes and includes;
• Locomotives: Train component that provides the motive power
• Wagons: Unpowered trailing units used for to transport cargo
• Tankers: Unpowered trailing units used for to transport liquid cargo
• Coaches: Unpowered trailing units designed to carry passengers
• Brake Van: Crew wagon at the end of freight train (not widely used now)
