Introduce students to the nine different components of the Business Model Canvas

Gather Supplies
Print enough copies of the BMC worksheets so each student has a packet. Or if you are using the Google Docs version for

Prepare Slides
Make a copy of these slides to walk through the answers with students.

During Class
Educator Guide Suggestions

Fill Out BMC 1: For digital versions of the worksheets for use with virtual/remote
Think Ask students to individually fill out the AirBnB BMC: students, send students this link: https://bit.ly/bmcworksheets
Travelers worksheet.

Give them the first step to show how it works. Tell them,
“The way this works is that you look at the hypotheses
beneath the Canvas, and then write them into the Canvas
where you think they go. For instance, write ‘Travelers’ in
the Customer Segment box”

Fill Out BMC 1: When they have filled out the AirBNB BMC: Travelers
Pair Canvas, have students pair up with someone who is not
currently sitting next to them.

They will each share their BMC with each other, talking
through any differences, or any matches they are
uncertain about.
Fill Out BMC 1:

Go around the room and ask a new pair to say each


successive box of the Canvas until you’ve made it
through all nine. Encourage other groups to discuss any
points of disagreement or uncertainty as you progress.

Fill Out BMC 2: Now ask students to fill out the AirBnB BMC: Hosts
The Hosts canvas in the same way.

Take time to explain that many businesses don’t have just


one business model as a part of their success. Instead
many business, like AirBNB, are a multi-sided market. In
this business model, the needs of two parties must be
met.

You can highlight the popularity of this business model by


pointing out that Uber, Doordash, Amazon all have this
multi-sided market where the business has to keep
multiple customers happy.
