START AND STOP SEQUENCE OF CAT D3304 DIESEL GENERATOR

STARTING SEQUENCE
An engine start signal can be one of the three:

1. The operator turns the Engine Control Switch (ECS) to Manual Start position.
2. The ECS is in the Auto position and the remote initiate contacts (IC) is closed.
3. The ECS is in Auto position and the start command is sent by optional customer communication
module (CCM)

N/B: The engine starting sequence below is based on assumption the engine is on NORMAL MODE
and that the GSC checks for previous fault have been corrected.

i. The operator turns ECS to MANUAL position to close contacts 1, 4, 8, 9 and 10 making a
complete path between the GSC and the battery source.
ii. Generator set control (GSC) picks up the start command from the ECS and performs series of
pre-start up checks to clear previous shutdown faults before activating the relay module, i.e
the starting motor relay (SMR) and the Run Relay (RR). The GSC activates the fuel control
relay (FCR) for ETR fuel system.
iii. Once energized, SMR relay K4 activates starting motor magnetic switch (SMMS) to a closed
position to energize pinion solenoid (PS) to the pinion solenoid switch which in turn
energizes the starter motor (SM) to crank the engine.

N/B: (a) The starter motor cranks the engine until the cycle crank time reaches default setpoint
(P17) of 10 seconds crank time or until the engine starts. While cranking, it factory default speed is
400rpm (P11) then GSC via magnetic speed pickup deactivates the starting motor relay and opens
SMMS, PS, and activates crank termination relay (CTR) and Electronic Governor Relay (EGR) when oil
pressure reaches default setpoint (P14) is 70kPa (10Psi) for low oil pressure at idle speed and then
commands the EG to accelerate at a self sustained speed.

N/B: (b) Optional customer communication (CCM) module can remotely activate the EGR when low
oil level setpoint is exceeded or when low oil pressure setpoint is exceeded.

iv. The GSC show AC voltage, current, and frequency for one phase at a time on upper display.
Also, it shows system battery voltage, engine hours, rpm, oil pressure, and coolant
temperature on lower status, and relay status indicator of lower display K1, K3, K5, K7 for
ETR fuel system. K1, K3, K5 for ETS fuel system.

ENGINE STOPPING SEQUENCE

An engine stop signal can be any of the three:
a. The operator turns the ECS to stop position
b. The ECS in on the Auto position and a stop command is sent by optional customer
communication module (CCM)
c. The ECS is in auto position and the remote initiate contacts (IC) is opened.

Engine stopping sequence is assumed no fault condition and normal mode operation.

i. An operator turns ECS to the stop position to signal GSC to prepare for a shutdown and
also check that no faults are present.
ii. Once checks are completed GSC begin adjustable cooldown time (P19) at a default
setpoint of 5 minutes.
iii. After cooldown time is completed, GSC deactivates and EGR once low oil pressure drops
below 10Psi at default low oil pressure shutdown at idle speed (P14).
The GSC also shuts off fuel supply by deactivating the fuel control relay (FCR) for ETR
systems.

iv. When engine speed reaches zero rpm, the GSC deactivate the crank termination relay.
Restart is available at this point.
N/B: Engine can run if GSC receives a start signal before engine speed reaches complete zero
rpm.

v. GSC shows relay status or relay status indicators of the lower display as OFF for ETR
system.
N/B: Engine shutdown can simply be achieved by turning ECS to OFF/RESET position to by-
pass the engine cooldown timer.
