INTRODUCTION
On April 15, 1707, in Basel, Switzerland,
Leonhard Euler was born. His name is
pronounced "oiler." His father was Paul
Euler, and his mother was Marguerite
Brucker. The oldest of their four kids was
Leonhard. Leonhard's mother was the
daughter of a clergyman. His father served
as a pastor for a Calvinist congregation.

BECOMING A MATHEMATICIAN
Basel is where Leonhard attended school. Since Euler didn't receive any mathematical
instruction in the Basel school he attended, he mostly learnt the subject from his father,
Paul III Euler, through independent reading and private tutoring.
Leonhard's father had hoped that he would follow in his father's footsteps and become
a Calvinist preacher, but private sessions with Johann Bernoulli had shown that
Leonhard had been endowed with amazing mathematical abilities. At the time,
Bernoulli was most likely the most prominent active mathematician in the world. He
was also close to Leonhard's father, and the two talked about Leonhard's exceptional
mathematical talent.
UNIVERSITY OF BASEL WHERE EULER STUDIED

1733 - he took over the chair of
mathematics from Daniel Bernoulli.
Well, Euler was the first to introduce the notation for a function f(x). He also
popularized the use of the Greek letter π to denote the ratio of a circle's
circumference to its diameter. Euler also contributed to numbers theory, graph theory,
logic, and applied mathematics. But aside from that Euler invented the calculus of
variations including its most well-known result, the Euler–Lagrange equation. Euler

also pioneered the use of analytic methods to solve number theory problems. In
doing so, he united two disparate branches of mathematics and introduced a new
field of study, analytic number theory.

What was Euler's Part in Numbers Theory?
Euler's great interest in number theory can be traced to the influence of his friend,
Christian Goldbach. He proved Newton's identities, Fermat's little theorem and
Lagrange's four-square theorem. Euler made progress toward the prime number
theorem and conjectured quadratic reciprocity.
Most of Euler's greatest successes were in applying analytic methods to real world
problems. He integrated Leibniz's differential calculus with Newton's Method of
Fluxions. In 1739 he wrote the Tentamen novae theoriae musicae, hoping to integrate
music theory with mathematics.
